    1. Burton-Wisdom-Woolfolk Families
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0AC.2ACE/895 Message Board Post: I am a volunteer researcher at the Randolph Co (MO) Historical Society, and am currently developing files on some of our county's first settlers who have yet to be addressed by our research. I am specializing on the area around the small town of Higbee in the southern part of the county. Higbee's main street is called Division since it marks the line fence between the Burton farm and another to the north. The earliest of the Burton line is said to have been an Ambrose Burton (no dates) of Orange Co, VA who m. an Ann Wisdom (no dates.) Their son, May Burton (b. l780) came to MO and among his children was a Joseph Wisdom Burton, of course making one wonder if Ann's father's name wasn't Joseph. Joseph's wife was the former Agnes Woolfolk, and possibly being a Woolfolk descendant myself, I'm wondering if she was from Orange. I'd enjoy hearing from anyone knowledgeable of these surnames in the Orange area.

    3. Thanks so much to everyone for that information on Mary Harris, just discovered the other day she had 5 sons, 3 dau on the 1820 census. Looked everywhere for that 1850 census--even my library didn't have it. My only info. on her previous was her name Mary Gardner, dau of Tho. Gardner & her marriage to Thomas Harris 1793 Spots. Co. married by Rev. Will Douglas--had no idea they even had children. Her husband, Thomas Harris d 1811 Orange Co. He was s/o Thomas Harris d 1782 Orange Co. Va wife, Sabra, Ch: sons: Lindsay m Frances Atkins, Thomas m Mary Gardner, John, Lewis m 2) Martha Smith, daus: Elizabeth m James Payne, Mary m Lewis Walker. I now suspect the Frances Long living with Mary was probably the dau. of Sabina Harris m Spotswood Long 1824 Orange Co. with a Tho. Harris as bondsman--could be this Thomas was s/o Mary/Thomas Harris. In the Orange Co. marriages, there was also a Thomas Harris bondsman for Frances Harris & William Clark 1832, also be dau. of Mary Harris. Their Orange Co. land in 1803 adj. John Wright & Thomas Ellis, was first purchased in 1766 by Tho. Harris, wife Sabra. DNA has this Harris line thru Lewis Harris grouped with the Capt Tho. Harris 1611 Jamestown. Thanks again. Carol Barron, descendant of Thomas Harris residing 1748 Hanover Thomas Harris d 1782 Orange Co. Lindsay Harris d 1803 Orange Co. 2. Hello, Orange County, I am new to the list and a descendant of Alexander "Ellick" SCOGIN, born in Orange County before 1755. His father was John SCOGIN and the information I have indicates his mother was Mildred BRUNSWICK, although that is unsure at best. Ron Massey Shreveport, LA

My Robert Wright was b. 1808 supposedly in Orange County. His father was James Wright, and Robert also had a sister Martha b. 1810 also in Orange County. This is all I know about this family, but I'd definitely love to find out anything you have. Thanks

I believe Robert's marriage license says his father's name is James, from Orange County, but doesn't list a mother's name. Have you seen Robert's grave in Rockingham County? Please contact me via e-mail and I will send a picture of his grave. I'd certainly be willing to share any information I may have. Thanks!

    2. Anthony Davis
    3. Jonathan Davis (1730-1817) married Lucy Gibbs (ca 1738-ca 1818) probably in Orange County, Virginia. About 1785, he moved his entire family to Wilkes County, Georgia, where he and Lucy died. (1) Has anyone found the parents of Lucy Gibbs? (2) Can anyone trace Jonathan's family back to Great Britain? Anthony CASH, DAVIS, LEDBETTER, WALTON

    1. ADMIN NOTE - Recent Postings
    2. The recent complaint sent to this and other lists was inappropriate, and Mr. Bernstein has rendered his apology. I hope this will end all discussion on this topic and we can get back to Orange County Virginia research. Thanks! Harriet Welch List Administrator

    1. Apology
    2. This is to apologize for a e-mail sent last Wednesday to this and other lists sent by my niece but written by me and I never intended it to be sent. Once written, my anger was released and I thought better. However, my niece can go from Lady to the word use for female dog in 4.2 seconds. I did not realize she had sent the message until the next morning. That being say, some good things came form the e-mail. 1. After a discussion with AOL, I now get it for $7.00 less. 2. Many many e mails were sent in agreement. 3. The lady who ripped me off has now listed my research as hers on her web site, with the a Mulatto slave as the great grandfather of her husband. She said she did the research herself. 4. She sent to me updated information about her family with birthdays and maiden names of living people. Smart enough to ripped me off, dumb enough to send that information to a total stranger. On the downside after doing genealogical research for thirty-three years and having two articles published in The American Genealogist, I will now quit genealogy. I will leave it to the new breed of Internet Genealogists that have no sense of right or wrong. So no need to unsubscribe me for an apology, I will do that soon myself. Thank You Tonto Bernstein

I have the census records between 1810-1840, but no tax records for the 1780s & 90s. Who here has a family there during that time that they can place? Would you please post the taxtables as well? (Nothing after 1840 please) If you know the names of the family members, please list them as well. Thanks in Advance - Kristy in VA

    1. Re: [VAORANGE] Sharing Information, found myself listed as deceased
    2. Sorry, apparently I wasn't clear in my message. I have no problem with family data bases at all, and am more than happy to share whatever information I have on any of my family lines, and certainly appreciate any leads that I find on any of the same. I just don't feel that it is a sound practice to take information and "correct" it without verification. Perhaps this is just a personal thing and others are a little more easygoing about this. Obviously if I'm listed as having died in Atlanta several years ago, but am sending this email from the suburbs of New York City, it would appear that someone's information is less than credible. I do hope that it isn't mine. As for why I am on the list? My family was in the Orange County area from the early 1700's or before, so probably for the same reasons the rest of you are on it. Still searching, trying endlessly to make connections and wishing for the loose thread that ties it all up. Regards to all. Michele Cooper

    2. ==I, too, have shared information only to come across it listed in massive family data bases == Thank you for sharing that information. It just leaves two questions in my mind. Why do you subscribe to this maillist, anyway? And why are you accessing massive family data bases, if not to find information that others have shared? I'm sure that you are not one of those genealogists whose motto is "take all you can get, and give back nothing." You just need to join those of us who realize that the only way to combat the dissemination of bad information, is to freely disseminate good information.

    1. Re: [VAORANGE] Sharing Information, found myself listed as deceased
    2. I, too, have shared information only to come across it listed in massive family data bases and much to my consternation found myself listed as having died several years ago in Atlanta. I contacted the originator of this family tree some time ago, however I have as of yet to be restored back to "living". In addition, I listed my father's name as Asa Junior Finnell. The Junior as a middle name was a mistake made on his birth certificate, but he went through life with the middle name of Junior. However, now people feel compelled to "correct" his name to read Asa Finnell, Jr. I certainly wish people would not use my information and feel that it's OK to alter it! Still searching for: FINNELL, BROOKS, MARTIN, HUBBARD, VA, KY and MO

    1. Re: [VAORANGE] Sharing Information
    2. Given the choice between sharing my information selectively, with someone to whom I might be in the mood to send it, and sharing it with everyone, so that if one person garbles it there may be five others to point out the mistakes and make sure the correct information is widely available --- well, I guess I'm just stupid. I would go with putting it out there for everyone. Of course, I have a daughter who is a schoolteacher. I paid to put her through college, and now other people's kids get to learn from her, for free. I guess I should be just as selfish about sharing my descendants, as I should be about sharing my ancestors.
