Sorry, let's try again. Click on the url and then go the links on the left side of the page and click "publications." That should take you to another page. Scroll down that one (on the right) to "Historic Roads of Virginia." Click on that and scroll down (again on the right) until you come to the list of books and their authors. Sorry, I didn't give you those instructions in the beginning. I have it bookmarked so it went right to it. Good luck! Barb --- Original Message --- >I can't seem to find the road books link. Several Virginia Road Books are on line. These books give the names and dates of people order by the court to help clear or maintain roads. There's a lot of good information in there. http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/index_main.htm Barb Marshall
Have you looked at the Orange CO road books? My guess is that his father was Zachary Taylor who appeared often in the records of Orange CO before 1751. Looking for Ancestors of James Tayloe born Jan. 21, 1753 in Virginia (county unknown). He served in the Virginia Old Militia 1775-1781 Orange Co., VA. He married (1) Rebecca ? (2) Sarah Rhodes. By 1796 he was living in Bertie Co., NC. Any information would be appreciated. Beth
Cathy, I just can not quite get a handle on all of the below to see if either of us have clues among the information. Certainly this is the right time frame. But, no, I haven't found Leonard Davis nor Mary Wilson Marshall Davis. But let me add to the below what I have sent to this mail list before: > I have a small pamphlet that I received from the Zion Baptist Church > in Orange County, Virginia which was founded in 1813. It is a very > short history of the founding of the church. I am interested in > identifying as many of the men that are named as being present at the > first meeting: > > About three and one half miles south of Orange in the home of Brother > Hawkins with James Arnold, Roger Mallory, Nicolas Bickers, Joseph > Atkins, James Perry, Killie Hoard, Benjamin Hawkins, Hamlet Sanford, > John Rogers, William Bell, William Mallory, William Hancock, William > Embry, Coleman Marshall, Henry Perry, John Churchhill Gordon, and > Thomas Hawkins. Rev A. Waller preached the first sermon. I believe that the Coleman Marshall in the above list was also related to the people that I mentioned in the original e-mail. The will that I was referring to almost certainly belongs to the Benjamin named in the church list. I am not absolutely positive if the meeting described took place in Benjamin Hawkins's home or if it took place in the home of Benjamin's brother who would have been the father of Thomas Hawkins. But I have a gut feeling that there was intermarriage between the Hawkins family and the Marshall family. Actually a suspect intermarriage between the Hawkins family and the Perry family and the Marshall family and the Bell family.....It is very interesting to note that the Thomas Hawkins named above had a grandson named Jesse Marshall Hawkins. My own name comes from this man as my father was named Marshall after his grandfather and I received the female version of the name....Funny--I have suddenly become fonder of my own name while typing this e-mail....And even more interested in this Marshall family! Hi Marsha, I too am searching for a Susannah Marshall. My Susannah was the daughter of Leonard Davis. Leonard married Mary Marshall, a widower in Albemarle Co VA on Dec 23, 1788 [B/C Papers 1788-92]/ I also found a Revolutionary War Pension Record # S.12736 dated June 17, 1833 which states that Leonard Davis is living with his daughter Susannah Marshall. It further states that he married Mary Wilson. (Note: I believe this is the same Mary Marshall, a widower listed above). Also the 1840 Rockingham Co census, a Leonard Davis age 79 years is living with Susanna Marshall. I was wondering if in your search for your Susannah Marshall, you have found Leonard Davis or Mary Wilson Marshall Davis? Barb, do you (or if Marshall is not your maiden name your husband) descend from the Marshall family found in the Orange/Culpeper area in the 1700 and or 1800's? In a the will of Benjamin Hawkins who died circa 1841, Benjamin leaves a bequest to Matilda W. Marshall. He also mentions Susanna (my copy of the will is so poor and hard to read that I am not sure that the first two letters of this person's name are Su...) and Coleman Hawkins Any chance that you know any of these people? In that era, able-bodies male residents were expected and required to pitch in to repair roads in the vicinity of where they lived. The county overseer would make sure it got done, and if the job was not being done, then residents would be called before the county commissioners' court to give an account and they could be fined or whatever. I think each man had to work only one or two days a month. Can someone confirm or deny? Mary on the otherside
