    3. OK, I am finally getting a chance to get back to genealogy. I have practically forgotten what I used to know...I am reviewing misc information that I have collected. Can anyone help with the below people? In the Will of William Hawkins of the County of Orange and Parish of Sat. Thomas, being weak in body, dated 20 Jan 1776. Unto my son John Hawkins.... To my beloved wife, Elizabeth.... Unto my son William.... ....son John Unto my son Benjamin.... Unto my son John.... Witnesses: Uriel Mallory, Wm Strother, Thomas Brown Marsha in WV

    1. Coleman/Cole/Marshall/Hawkins/Scott circa 1841
    2. marsha moses
    3. I looked very briefly at the will of Benjamin Hawkins with wife Mary (possibly Carty?) who I think is sometimes referred to as Polly. I failed to write down the date, but I am pretty sure that it was 1841 in Orange County. In the will the following people are named: wife, Mary nephew Thomas R. Hawkins niece Mary Hawkins Sarah F. Coleman Josanna Marshall Matilda Marshall Coleman Marshall John Todd Charles Scott William Cole (decd) friend William C. Scott Can anyone help identify any of the above? In 1841, Thomas R. Hawkins would have been 43 years old. He did have a daughter named Matilda. So I need to look at the possibility that she had married a man with the last name Marshall. Thomas's wife, Matilda had already died when Benjamin's will was probated. Coleman Marshall had been named as a deacon when the Zion Baptist Church in Orange County was formed during a meeting in Brother Hawkins's home in 1813 in which both a Thomas and a Benjamin Hawkins were named as being present. So I think that Benjamin Hawkins and Coleman Marshall had been friends for many years when Benjamin died. Perhaps there was a family connection as well. OK just having asked my question has shown me some things that I can look at: Who did Thomas R. Hawkins's daughter Matilda marry? What was the relationship between the Coleman and Marshall family? Was there an Edward Pinkard in Culpeper County circa 1823? Thanks for listening to my thinking out loud and I would appreciate any input that anyone has. marsha in WV

Caleb Abell was a son of Richard Abell. Caleb Abell married Frances Martin. Their daughter Elizabeth Abell married George Smith of Orange Co., VA. After the death of George's father, George's step Mother received slaves for her life or widowhood. She sold her rights to these slaves, and some of her Step Children sold the rights to these slaves to Caleb Abell. He in turn deeded out of affection to Alexander Abell. George Smith's sister Elizabeth Smith married a John Martin of Albemarle Co., VA as his second wife in 1804, she is mentioned in his will in 1812. I am not sure if I have it right but another daughter of Caleb Abell was Polly who married Lindsey Martin, a Grandson of John Martin who died in 1812. Tiffany

Most of my Scotts seem to have headed south rather than north. I will certainly keep your John in mind as I continue to work on these Southern Scotts. I would sure be interested in any material you might have on Scotts in Orange Co., VA, as I haven't been able to come up with much. Any sign of Haynes/Haines, Blanchetts/Blancetts, Browns, or Martins mentioned in your data? Another Scott researcher says that she has found in DAR material a Wm. Scott, b. 1750 Orange Co., VA, d. 1801 NC, m. first in 1773 a Rebecca (Brown?). This Rebecca died 1806. I descend from another Wm. Scott who was possibly born in Orange Co., VA about 1755; he m. ca. 1778 a dau. of Thomas Ayers of Patrick Co., VA and Surry Co., NC; his Ayers wife was still alive in 1816 when he ga! ve a power of attorney from Wayne Co., KY to collect from the estate of this father-in-law, Thomas Ayers. This Wm. Scott, b. ca. 1755 was the father of another Wm. Scott, b. 1782 NC who moved from Wayne Co., Ky to Bedford Co., TN in 1828, then abt. 1839 to that part of Scott Co., AR that became Yell Co. when it was formed in 1842. This Wm. Scott and his wife Celia Conn probably died in Yell Co. between 1850 and 1860.

    3. Thank you for your response. I'm searching for the John Randolph Grymes, Esq. property in Orange Co. His parents were Philip Grymes and Mary Randolph. He was married to Susannah Randolph (his first cousin) granddaughter of Sir John Randolph. He lost his Middlesex area property to the Patriots before he left for England to serve briefly with the Rangers. When he returned they settled somewhere in Orange Co. John Randolph Grymes, Jr. was perhaps a nephew. I'm afraid I'm only vaguely familiar with the Steptoe name because of Benjamin's family connection with John R. Grymes.
