On the Mountain known as Bells Mountain there were a family of Bostons buried there. When my great grand uncle did his research on these three families located on the Mountain, Kirtley, Bells , and Bostons. Most of the Boston family moved South. Out of the Boston Family there were some slaves kept by the Boston families. Frances Boston was given slaves when she married William Bell, you may have to look for William Bells will or Frances Bells will. The other two were Sarah Boston and William Bradley Boston. William Boston had a total of 24 slaves, 12 were male , Black, oldest was 18 years old, looks like two sisters, with large families. William Bell, William Boston's brother-in-law had a total of 19 slaves. The only Black male slave was 45 years of age and old enough to produce children. He may have been the father of all these children. Francis Bell who was son of William Bell inherited slaves from his mother Francis Boston when he married and started his family and he has 6 slaves, a full family. Now you have to remember the Bell family and the Boston family libved together, not a 100 yards from one and the other. When the Proclamation Emancipation was declared and slaves were freed they could take the names of their owners, If Francis Bell inherited slaves from his Mother, they would still beconsidered Boston slaves. If you need a record of the lists email me at _CatheriHon@aol.com_ (mailto:CatheriHon@aol.com) Hope this helps Cathy

The history books note that Joseph Boston was a native of Virginia--born in 1843. The census records indicate that Joseph's mother, Jane, was also a native of Virginia--born in 1830. If you know of a connection between the Maryland BOSTONs and the state of Virginia, I would welcome the information. As to the BOSTON family that became "divided", I am not familiar with that branch--I have only researched Joseph Boston's lineage. Thanks again.

Carol, My Orange county families are mixed up with these bur not specifically with the ones you mention. If you lived near a big library, see if you can find the 4 volumes of "Orange County Families" By William Brockman. They are not always accurate but he has tons of info and can give you a heads up. I don't have enough exact info to help you, but I would be surprised if LDS does not have info (haven't checked) and perhaps you can get one of the libraries to lend you a copy, although I don't know if they lend reference books. Aslo, the Martins are tied to the Collins clan earlier and Collins and Brockmans intermarried often. Your Brockman-Harris connection is probably right. I have another line of Brockman but I have seen the names. Mine are Atkins, Groom, Burras, Brockman, Wisdom and Collins so I know they are tied to yours. Also check the earlier stages of Orange Co and Louisa. Caroline for one. I haven't done anything for a couple of years, so am a bit rusty. Pat Snyder
Could you tell me where these Martin's were from prior to Orange Co./Louisa Co.? I'm a Harris researcher who has Geo. Martin as a witness to one deed. Anthony Head was in Washington County by 1773. The Fincastle and Montgomery County surveys from Plat Book A records on February 15, 1774 “Anthony Head, 210 acres on the North Fork of [Holston] River in Rich Valley”. Anthony died abt 1780 in Washington County, Virginia. Mary then married Isaac Baker abt 1787. After Mary Head/Baker died her heirs filed a court case against her administrator of her estate, James Head. “Bledsoe, Loving et al vs. James Head, administrator. New suit to Oct term 1816. Executed 2nd August on James Head by copy left. Nicholas Longsong not found. Ca Loving Bledsoe & Milly, his wife; Lewis Petts & Mary, his wife, Eliza Lovingston, widow and relict of Peter Lovingston (Livingston); William Head, Goven Head; Anthony Head & Joseph Head, heirs and distributees of Mary Baker, Dec'd versus James Head, administrator of Mary Baker and Nicholas Lonsong. Dismissed for want of ??? bill.” Based on the above I would claim the children of Anthony Head and his wife Mary were Milly, Mary, Elizabeth, William, Gavin, Anthony, Joseph and James. I have not been able to determine who Anthony Head's parents were nor any information prior to the 1774 land survey. I am aware of the Heads of Orange County but I have not been able to connect. Anthony Head of Orange County is old enough to by Anthony Head of Washington County father. Thanks for the information.

Both of these families migrated to the same area of Kentucky and then later to Missouri. Both families intermarried with the Ruckers, who made the same migration from Virginia to Missouri via Kentucky. The following are some examples I have in my family database: 1.) In 1698, Thomas Burton, was witness to the will of Mary Head in Middlesex County, VA 2.) May Burton Jr. , son of May Burton Sr. and Hannah Medley, married Sara Head in Orange County, VA circa mid 1740’s. Sara was the daughter of Benjamin Head Sr. and Martha Sharman. 3.) Frances Burton, daughter of May Sr. married Ambrose Medley in Orange Co. in 1773. Their son, Jacob Medley, married Frances Head in Orange County in 1804. 4.) Mary Burton, daughter of May Sr. married John Rucker in Orange Co. in 1767. Their daughter, Mildred Rucker, married George M. Head in 1789 in Orange Co. George was the son of Benjamin Head Sr. 5.) Lucy Burton, daughter of May Burton Jr and Sara Head, married James Collins in Orange, Co. in 1793. Their daughter, Sarah Collins, married James Head in 1815 in Orange Co. 6.) Reuben Burton, son of John Burton and Elizabeth Hudson (and grandson of May Sr.) married Mary (Polly) Head. 7.) Minor Rucker, grandson of Mary Burton and John Rucker, married Harriet Head in Orange Co. in 1822. Minor Rucker ended up in Randolph Co., MO and was the instigator of a law suit over his grandfather’s will that occupied the Ruckers, Burtons and Heads for several years. 8.) Henry Head married Elizabeth Sanford in 1794 in Orange Co.. She was the daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Durrett. William Burton, son of May Burton Sr., married Elizabeth’s sister, Sarah Sanford. There are probably even more relationships I have not uncovered. Hope this helps.
Saw this and other notes regarding Hawkins. Orange County Historical Society has a file on the Hawkins. Including a copy of William Hawkins' will dated 31 Dec 1789 mentioning his wife Elizabeth and children, William, Rueben, Eliza or Elizabeth, Arculus, John. The file also contains information on the Hawkins of Virginia, The Carolinas, and Kentucky. If this sounds like your Hawkins maybe we can help. Also believe you inquired about the Newman School. It was located in Gordonsville (Orange County, VA) the prinipal was J. B. Newman and the period of operation was 1850-1860. Old BlueRun Baptis Church is located in the Somerset area of Orange County. The building is still standing.
