Hello List, As you may already know if you subscribe to other Rootsweb mailing lists, the current system that manages the lists is being replaced with a new, hopefully better system. The VAORANGE list is scheduled to be switched over to the new system on this coming Wednesday, September 13. Most people will see no change in receiving their mail. There are a few things that might be helpful to know ahead of time though: 1) If you use filters in your email program you may need to "tweak" them a bit because after the switch over the list mail will come in from VAORANGE@rootsweb.com instead of VAORANGE-L@rootsweb.com. If you have an "accept list" you may need to tweak it also. The system will, however, still accept mail sent to the list addressed to either address. 2) If you are subscribed to *both* the list and digest modes you will be added only to the list mode when the switch is made. The new system allows an email address to be subscribed to one or the other, but not both. If you would like to continue receiving both you will need to send a subscribe email to VAORANGE-D@rootsweb.com using a different email address. NOTE: If you are subscribed to just one of the modes, you will automatically be switched to that mode - no need to do anything. 3) For digest users: The format of the digest will be changing. If you decide you prefer the old format, I should be able to change it for you if you will drop me an email and let me know. If after the switch you question whether or not you are receiving the list mail, you can check the archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/VAORANGE. Hopefully everything will go smoothly, and you won't even know when it happens! If you do happen to have problems please email me at VAORANGE-admin@rootsweb.com Harriet Lee Welch List Administrator
In the 1791-95 Ornage County Land Tax Books there are listed the following Taylors: Charles, Erasmus, Erasmus (deceased), George, George (deceased), and James. In the late 1790's a number of Orange County families relocated to Montgomery CO. These include: Ferrel, Fillinger, Ott, Wolf (all from the Prieties Creek near Stannardsville in present day Greene Co.) We can not find any records earlier than 1785-95 for my ancestors. My g-g-g-grandfather, Creed Taylor, ended up in Montgomery County, VA somehow and married into a prominent family in Christiansburg. One source claims he was an adopted son of Chancellor Creed Taylor of the Cumberland County, VA area and another source claims his ancestors originated in Orange County, VA. Due to the census records of the 1700's we can not authenticate any of these claims. ------- Forwarded message ------- From: "Freddie Spradlin" <fspradlin@earthlink.net> To: VAGEN-L@rootsweb.com Cc: Subject: [VAGEN-L] FW: National Archives closure Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2006 23:29:30 -0400 In late July, the National Archives announced they were planning to cut back the hours of the Washington DC area facilities of the archives. This would eliminate all evening and Saturday hours and greatly harm the ability of the average genealogist to access the records. For full details, see http://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2006/nr06-125.html While the Archivist of the United States was at the FGS conference he reported that they had received very little feedback from the country's genealogists asking for reconsideration. He was also presented with a request from the chair of the FGS Records Preservation Committee to consider some alternatives and a petition was started to allow genealogists to express their disagreement with the changes and to endorse alternatives that will allow the evening and Saturday hours to continue. You can see more details about that in Dick Eastman's weekly newsletter at: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/quick_please_jo.html The petition can be signed at: http://www.petitiononline.com/FGS2006 I would encourage each of you, as board members of The USGenWeb Project to use your influence to publicize this information throughout the project. Note that the deadline for receiving comments on the proposed changes by the archives is September 9, so there isn't much time. And I suspect that if they succeed in reducing the Washington hours, the regional archives will be soon to follow. I appreciate all that each of you do in support of the project membership and all genealogists with US ancestry. I believe that a little effort in support of this effort by FGS will pay off long term in enhancing our ability to deliver free information to our clients - genealogists everywhere. Hi Cathy, Thanks for that. I had seen the Mary E. Grady in Louisa. She is a good prospect, I think. In fact, I copied that census sheet for further research... My Mary E. was supposedly born circa 1861, but I have seen some ages get shifted around between censuses for MUCH more than 4 years, so I am following up on Mary E. Grady, born in Louisa as my first prospect at this point. :-) I am still not sure I am ready to call it a direct hit, but it is in the right direction. :-) Thanks for your input!
