He was born in Orange Courthouse, VA in 1843/4 to Robert and ???Mary Gray???. At the beginning of the Civil War his father and brother left home to join Lee' Army???. His mother died in 1862 and he did not want to fight in the War so he went to Washington DC and worked in a Cemetery. In 1864 he joined the Marine Corps and spent the next 4 years aboard ship. When he went back to Orange Courthouse in 1868 he never found anyone from his family. He went back to DC and joined to Corps fpr another 4 years. After this discharge he found his way to Pittsburgh. I know there isn't much to go on but that is all I got. I hope this sounds familiar to some one.

Please if you have members living in MONTANA ASK THEM TO READ THE BILL AND SEND THIER COMMENTS TO THEIR RESPECTIVE, STATE CONGRESSMAN OR REPRESENTIVE, THank you Nelda YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL FIND OUT SOME OF YOUR RELATIVES WENT TO MONTANA and due to the loss of records have now dissapeared!!! From: "Patricia Marchington" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> CC: <[email protected]> Subject: URGENT--SB 443 has a TIE VOTE OF 9 TO 9 !! Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 07:32:18 -0700 TO THE SUPPORTERS OF SB 443 ! The House of Representatives have just told us that they have not heard much from Montana people in their own DISTRICTS. AND mostly from Livingston here...as the only MONTANA people.... HOWEVER, they have heard from all over the STATES (LOTS FROM ALASKA) and around the WORLD (AUSTRALIA, FRANCE, ENGLAND, CANADA...). Especially the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES on this STATE ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE, feel that "playing POLITICS" and squaring off Democrats against Republicans is the way to go with SB 443, (they had a bad long drawn out fight the day before on a different BILL)! And this Committee thinks nit-picking on every little point is being responsible.........SIMPLE SOLUTIONS are not something they understand!! Yes, there has been 4 Amendments to SB 443!!! HOWEVER, SB 443 is still: "AN ACT REQUIRING THAT LOCAL PUBLIC RECORDS BE OFFERED TO CERTAIN ENTITIES AND TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC BEFORE BEING DESTROYED! The Amendments basically state how the NOTICE will be given.........SINCE THE COURTHOUSE CLERKS CAN'T BE BOTHERED WITH HAVING TO GIVE TOO MUCH NOTICE TO PUBLIC (PRIVATE CITIZENS), after all!! SB 443 is still under DEADLINE.....we may have until Monday (I am still checking on this....since everyone tells me a different date!!). I am leaving for Helena in a few minutes......if I have to talk with all of these other 9 NO VOTERS......AND ALL OF THE REMAINING 100 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES BY MYSELF I WILL ! I JUST DON'T FEEL THAT IF THIS BILL DIES.... THAT MONTANA'S OLD RECORDS DESERVE TO HAVE THE SAME FATE !! Especially since the Legislature will not meet again for 2 YEARS ! Marien Stolzenburg & I give permission to fax or scan our LETTERS TO THE EDITORS from Wed. 3/21/01 Billings Gazette Paper to any other paper in Montana........or anyone else could write their own to any paper in MT. Sen. Butcher the sponsor of SB 443 says, "Use polite persuasion to the NO VOTERS" on this State Administration Committee..... The NO Voters are: Debby Barrett--Dillon Dee Brown--Hungry Horse Larry Lehmen--Power Ralph Lenhart--Glendive Gay Ann Masolo--Townsend Doug Mood--Seeley Lake Alan Olson--Roundup Rick Ripley--Wolf Creek Clarice Schrumpf--Billings All of these members have heard from the Park County Genealogy Soc. in fact we have written to a lot of the 100 Rep.......so they think that since we are so small we can be ignored!!! The out-of-staters have been begging me to let them help, as have the out of Country Genealogists.........but the Legislators will only listen to Montana people! I have known this from the start. What is sad is that these out-of-staters and out of country Genealogists, really think of themselves as MONTANA people, because some still have family here while others use to live here and still others have very deep MT HISTORY in their FAMILY ROOTS. THEY JUST WANT TO PROTECT THE MONTANA OLD RECORDS... SB 443 WOULD BE THE FIRST LAW TO ESTABLISH A RECOGNITION OF PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT TO PRESERVE ALL OF OUR MONTANA HERITAGE, UNIVERSALLY THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE STATE OF MONTANA!! I have just been told, that in some Montana Counties where they have micro-filmed some......they threw out the OLD RECORDS BOOKS, BUT, the film was the cheapest the County would buy, so the films are so faded that they can't be read! And since it was the Clerks that were doing the filming, they got tired of taking the books apart to be filmed.....so what was filmed was only parts of a page, the bindings had been too big to lay anywhere close to flat! Some of the Counties this happened in were in Rep. Olson's DISTRICT (see above list of No Voters)....whereby these same CLERKs have been calling him to Vote NO!!! e-mail the House of Representatives TODAY !! http://leg.state.mt.us/leg_msg.htm SB 443 IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF DR. & PROFESSOR TOOLE OF THE UNIV. OF MONTANA--MISSOULA. He was The Historian of Montana History & champion to the Preservation of Montana's past through not only artifacts, but also it's WRITTEN HISTORY ! Please Support SB 443. He was the son of John LEE/LYES/LIES/LEA, who was buried in St. Martin's Parish 23 Feb. 1629/30, and Jane, dau. of Edward and Alice ( JEFFRYS ) HANCOCK, of Twining, Glousestershire, England. Jane ( HANCOCK ) LEE married again on 29 July 1632, St. Martin's Parish, to John MANINGE/MANNING, he died in 1633. Jane was buried 24 Feb. 1638/9, St. Albam, Worcester, Eng., will dated 1635, probated 1639, mentions sons, John, Richard and Thomas, her bro. Thomas HANCOCK as etx. assisted by my brother's Richard LYES ( John's bro. ), Walter HEMING ( Rich. LYES bro-in-law ) and Thomas SAVAGE ( Jane's sis. Mary's husband ). Col. Richard LEE Sr., married in Jamestown, 1641, to Ann(a), dau. of Francis CONSTABLE, deceased. Charles LEE Sr.'s daughter, Leanna ( Lee Hannah ), was married about 1705-6, to Capt. William JONES Jr., son of William JONES Sr. ( also a Capt. ), who died by Mar. 1710, aged abt. 60 yrs., and 1st. wife, ???? dau. of James JOHNSON. William was the Robert JONES, will date 14 Mar. 1675/6, probated 1 Mar. 1675/6, Northum'd. Co., mentions sons, William, Samuel, Robert, and Maurice, cozen's ( newhews ) John son of Thomas JONES, and Richard HUES/HEWES/HUGHES, etx. wife Martha, loving friends Mr. Thom. HAYNES and Mr. Geo. FLOW-- ( FLOWERS ). There was also a dau. Mary who married Geo. WALE, who rec. her dau. part of the estate of Robt. JONES Sr, deed date 21 Aug. 1678, possible other daughters as well. In a deed William IRONMONGER calls him brother-in-law, I think Robert may have married twice or is related to this family. Capt. William JONES and Leanna LEE had these children, in St. Stephen's Register: 1) JONES, Elizabeth b. 21 Aug. 1707 m. Rev. John BELL, had Charles, Thomas who pro. m. Elizabeth L. TAYLOR, John, James, Mary who m. 1st. Capt. John JONES, son of Swan(n), son of Maurice/Morris and Judith SWANN JONES ( youngest son of Robert above ) and Elizabeth ( 1709-50 ), dau. of Hancock LEE Sr. ( ca. 1653- 1709 ), son of Col Richard and Ann LEE Sr., and 2nd. wife Sarah, dau. of Isaac Jr. and 2nd. wife Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY ALLERTON. William, son William and Winifred ( NELMS ) DOWNING, and Ann COTTRELL, possibly others. Capt. William JONES Jr.'s will dated 25 Nov. 1740, proved Northum'd, 11 May 1741, mentions wife Leanna JONES, daus. Eliabeth BELL, Leanna JONES, Sarah JONES ( no info.?? ), son William, gr-dau. Ann JONES, and Rev. John BELL. Leanna LEE JONES wd. 25 Feb. 1750, no probate, can't find will, but dau. Leanne JONES and grandson William NELMS were mentioned. As you know Elizabeth ( LEE/JONES ) TAYLOR m. Zachary, mentioned in wills are sons Hancock, Richard, Zachary TAYLOR an dau. Elizabeth, her husband Thomas BELL. There are possibly more children, Meade's Old Churches states that Zachary and Elizabeth had 7 sons and three daughters. I don't see that is possible if they were married about 10 years or so. Elizabeth was a twin and that runs in the family, so many a set or two of twins, but she was about 48 to 49 years old when she died. No wonder she died young, also maybe Meade was refering to John JONES as well?? Major John LEE, who died in Woodford Ky, 1802, married Elizabeth BELL. They moved from Orange Co. with Margaret BELL, Eliz.'s sister by 1792. They appointed James BELL, of Orange, as their attorney to convey the tract of land to William NORRIS, of Fauquier Co., as " children of the late Thomas BELL, dec'd, of Orange ". Sources: Lee of Va., by Dr E.J. Lee reprint 1972, Genealogies of Virginia Families, " Who were the parents of Col. Richard Lee of Virginia " Vol. 76, Gen. Gleaning in England, Robert Jones of Fleets Bay, Northumberland Co. and his Decsendants, Colonial Abstracts of Virginia, etc. BTW, we are probably related many X removed, our family line is from Anne, full sister to Elizabeth ( LEE/JONES ) TAYLOR, who married William EUSTACE. Their grand daughter married as her 2nd. husband, Hon. Richard Henry LEE, as his 2nd. wife. Richard H. and Anne ( GASKINS/PINCKARD ) LEE had Sarah " Sallie " LEE who married her 3rd. cousin, Edmund Jennings LEE Sr., son of Henry Jr.( II ) and Lucy GRYMES LEE. Someone posted Gen. Robert E. LEE, it was missing a line. His line is this, Richard Sr. ( CONSTABLE ) LEE, to Richard Jr. ( II, CORBIN ) LEE, to Henry Sr. ( BLAND ) LEE, to Henry Jr. ( II, GRYMES ), to Henry III " Light Horse Harry " ( 2nd. wife CARTER ) LEE, to Gen. Lee. Also has anyone one found the will of Zachary TAYLOR Sr.??? If so could you point me in the right place, thank you. I hope your not to mixed up, this information on the BELL's and thier marriages is a little knew to me. Kathleen R. L. Whelihan
