Hi Robert, They had marriage bonds, minister's returns and consent forms back in 1792, but Virginia kept no actual marriage records then. There are microfilms and books at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, the books are transcriptions of the bonds from each county and city. Marriage records with information on the couples, such ags ages, parents, birthplaces, etc. did not start in Virginia until 1853. What you can get from copies of consent forms is sometimes a parent's name, consent needed in Va. at the time if the bride or groom was under the age of 21 years. Sometimes consent was given by a guardian if the parents were deceased. A bond would have the groom's signature and the amount of the penalty of the bond and the security and the names of the couple, but no personal data at all. His name was actually Catlette! Have found his obit and that of his brother and wife as well. He was born in Orange Co, Va.....I know this is near Spotsylvania Co. I was in Va earlier this month and saw a sign for Catlette Va....I was in Bealeton I believe, on Route 17. Could Barnett's Ford, in Orange Co, where Catlette was born, be in that area by any chance? I also know he served with Mosby's Rangers at one point in the CW...I saw a sign for a museum or something like that to do with Mosby on Rte 66, not too far from where I got off of 66 onto 17..... I assume that Mosby must have been from that area???? Anyone that can give me some help here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Posted on: Orange Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Orange/10506 Surname: MITCHELL ------------------------- I understand that Mr. Mitchell owned or worked in a jewelry store in Gordonsville, was robbed and killed around 1796. Our family is not certain of his first name, but believe it to be James Garner Mitchell. There were two daughters born to him, Emma Roberta in 1792, and Daisey born either prior to Emma or after. We don't know the mother's name either. I saw a post by Janice of Mitchells in the Marriage book for that time frame. Is there anyone in Orange Co who could check at the courthouse, or who knows of a newspaper at that time, or can offer any help or suggestions for us to find out something about this man?
