Hi, My Great Great Great Grandparents were William F. and Phebe McClary. They were married August 28, 1822. I the date they were married in the "Orange County Marriages - 1747-1850" book I had ordered. They had a child by the name of Mary McClary who married James Spencer Campbell. These two people are my Great Great Grandparents. Phebe McClary's maiden name is Dempsey. Anyways, I saw in the book that a Tandy McClary was a witness to their marriage. A Tandy B. McClary was the boundsman. I have been trying to figure out whether Tandy is female or male. I thought male. I also am trying to find out how this Tandy B. McClary is related to William F. McClary.
Do you have a Thomas Taylor born abt. 1850 as a son of Zachary Taylor and Elizabeth Lee?
Everett Gay lived in Orange County at least in the early 1800's. He was a teacher. He had three children Sally. Eliza A., and William E. Gay. He was living with William E. Gay in the 1850 census. Eliza A. Gay married James Oliver Smith in 1840 and died abt 1847. I am searching for any information available on this family, in particular where did they come from and who was the wife of Everett Gay.
Is there a record, as proven by tax records or other, when Richard Taylor left Orange County for Ky? I have the deed where he bought 175 acres land here in Jefferson Co. KY in 1792. He built a fort-like house, today the back section of our house, between 1792-5 when he sold the property to George Rudy and moved to a site due north of here. DO any property records exist in Orange Co. regarding Richard/ no. of slaves, household inventory, inheritances. Whatever would give us an idea of what he brought here. Also, he is said to have served in the 1792 Indian campaign. Any records of that? Thanks ever so much. Lynn
Dear List Members, Could someone on the list, familiar with the old Marriage Record Books of the County, tell me if the book(s) containing the Marriage Records of 1792 still exist today? If so, how can one, living in Alabama and has never been to VA, go about obtaining a copy of the marriage record of an ancestor who was married in Orange County in 1792? Caleb Oliver and Nancy White applied for a Marriage License on Sept. 5, 1792 and were married on Sept. 10, 1792 in said County. I would like to get the source information of this record (Book and page number) as well as a copy of this record. are these records located in the county or are they at the Virginia State Library? Any guidance would be very much appreciated. Thanking you in advance :) Robert C. Johnston, Jr. 139 Eagle Creek Drive Wetumpka, AL 36092 USA [email protected]
William Lewis Lovely, an immigrant from Dublin, Ireland, was a servant in the home of James Madison's parents before Madison became president. He later became Indian Agent to the Cherokee in Arkansas from 1813-1817. In 1815 he wrote to then President James Madison about his isolated life in Arkansas. Does anyone know a thing about Lovely? Was he a married man with children back when he was a servant in Virginia? Trying to find out something about his earlier life in Virginia (he married Mrs. Persis Brown Goodrich much later in 1807).
I have a Winnie Beasley who married William Kyler in Garrard County, KY. It is my understanding that she was born in VA. Any connection? Mary Alice
I am working on James Beasley, let's exchange info. Thanks Betty at [email protected]
I am looking for information on John Wilkirson/Wilkinson and Betsy Breedlove. John is suspected of being born in 1740 in England and dying in Orange county in June 1778. He reportedly married Betsy Breedlove in 1773 in Charlotte County, but there is evidence of the marriage. Any information would be GREATLY appreciated.
>>Can someone clarify for me the map of Orange Co of 1734? It's difficult to read the words but is the whole map to include modern day KY and the Old Northwest Territory Orange Co? Thank you<< I haven't seen the map of Orange county, Va. 1734, however I can tell you that before Frederick and Augusta were formed in 1738, Orange county was considered to include everything to the "Western Waters". Some have interpted this to mean the Mississippi River while others considered it to mean the western ocean (Pacific).. This should cause no problem in researching names of families.because the land was not settled very far to the west..No Whites had settled in southwest Va. Tenn. Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois etc. in 1734.. Go to Frederick and Augusta Co. for records after 1743-45.. G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
There is a better (clearer) version of the map on the Orange County Historical Society's web site. http://www.kclark.net/ochs Attention Genweb Webmaster Harriet! Would be interested in corresponding to anyone who has information on THIS Zachariah Lee, b 12-25-1812 ( I know there are a lot of Zachariahs out there.) According to family Bible of Zachariah's father-in-law, Zachariah was probably from East Virginia. Married Mary (Maria) Shaffer 6-4-1850. Mary was b Shenandoah County. In 1850 census Zachariah was living in the home of Israel (Isrial) Shaffer, father of Mary. Mary may have been his second wife. Any information greatly appreciated.

Looking for Pierce Sanford Pierce (birthplace unknown) is believed to have been born around 1764. He appears in the court records of Orange Co., VA around 1779. He sort of materializes out of nowhere. The deeds of Orange County refer several times to Pierce when he had dealings with relatives and others. He did not leave a will but was involved as a witness to other peoples wills and was given administration of at least one estate. His wife's name was Elizabeth Samson (or Sampson). The minute books of Orange County beginning in 1797 show that Pierce was a commissioner of revenue for the lower district (similar to a tax collector) and was paid between 48 to 90 days for his services. He was also one of the overseers of the poor from time-to-time. He also surveyed land and was one of the surveyors of the court-house site no probate records for Pierce have been found and so it is assumed that he died without leaving a will. He and Elizabeth had nine children. . .one of which was Reuben Sanford b. ca. 1780! . This Reuben is our line! Other children of Pierce were: Sally, Peggy, Steward, Mima, James Hamlet, Harriet and Lawrence. Our Reubin married Nancy Wallace in Orange County, VA. They had 7 children there. One of these was our line, Charles Brooken. Reuben and Nancy moved to Mason County, KY. Reuben apparently followed there his brother Hamlet and they, in turn were followed by brother Lawrence who first appeared on deed records there in 1822 and 1824. Any Information on Pierce would be appraciated
Hi, I'm a new member and very happy to be here! I've been searching for the father of my gg grandfather Green W. Southard for five years. I received information today that his father's name was John Southard (b 9 Sep 1758 in Beifield VA d 1833 in Orange Co.VA). First of all does anyone have any Southards in their line this could tie into? Secondly ... is Beifield also in Orange Co? It doesn't show on any maps of VA.... I realize it could be a town that died out long ago but I was hoping that one of you might know of it. Also.....is there anyone on this list who can do look ups for people? Thank you .... and I'm thrilled to be here and making some headway! Katherine Southard-Reece Genealogy site: http://www.paradoxdesigns.com/celtic
Another one of the descendants of the Blue Ridge Mountain and a relative of mine, has left us. Elsie Dodson, sister of Margaret Dodson, (both of Flint Hill, VA) died at Warren Memorial Hospital some time yesterday. Elsie Dodson, who was born in Hazel country is a descendant of William Dodson. She was a retired school teacher who taught in Rapphannock somewhere. I think the funeral will be a gravesite one at the Flint Hill Cemetary. I will post more details as I learn of them. Otherwise, please check your newspapers for further information. Carol P. Laing [email protected] http://www.usgennet.org/usa/va/shenan/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ChildrenoftheShenandoah
