    3. Steve and Kay: Have been following your Van Slyke messages--didn't know you were already "on the road", and since you are only 4 hours away, thought I'd find out if your stops include us and/or the Black Hills! If so, advise, and we'll go from there. We will be leaving Friday AM (for Montana!) but will be here till then, and doing yard work etc. Cell phones don't work FROM here, but can receive. 605-578-3872. As I mentioned before, we have a lot of "parking area" and you are most welcome. Let us know! 3. Dear Steve and Kay, I was in Schenectady 2 years ago. Be sure and visit the local library, where they can help you. You may be interested in my page on Hillitie Van Slyck. She is a fascinating person in her own right: http://www.donparrish.com/AncestorHilletieVanOlinda.html I'm on a slow connection in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan so I will close here. 3. Hi Wayne, While in the Schenectady area lets not overlook your Mohawk Indian roots, which go back much further in this country. There is an Iroquois Indian Museum by Howe's Caverns which if you go, go to both. If you go to Howe's Caverns bring a jacket it is underground. Also Secret Cavern if you want to do more right in one area.. There is a Native American Museum in Auriesville, site of the Indian village of Caughnawaga. Katerishrine.com Old Fort Johnson has colonial re-enactments and exhibits www.oldfortohnson.org There is an Indian exhibit at The New York State Museum in Albany. If anyone was in the Revolutionary War visit Saratoga Battlefield, Stillwater, NY. If you like horses go to the oldest still running thoroughbred track in Saratoga Springs, July and August. Make sure to go to the stockade district while in Schenectady. Think about a short cruise on the Hudson, which is how the first in this country ancestors arrived to this area. Have Fun! 2. Hi: I am the grandson of a VanSlyke (Edith). If you are interested, there is a cemetery located in East Koy, NY, Wyoming County. East Koy is a VERY small place so I don't know if it is even on maps anymore. This cemetery has many of the VanSlyke family buried there including William VanSlyke a revolutionary war soldier who, I believe, was my grandmother's grandfather. Wyoming County is located south of Rochester about 65 miles, so not really that far from Schenectady. It is near Castle,NY and Pike, NY you would probably have to ask someone around there as to directions. Many VanSlykes were born and raised in this area and I know that there is still one VanSlyke family who have a large dairy farm there. 3. Hi Wayne, My Van Slykes started in Herkimer Co, mostly in German Flatts. I think the one farthest back is Martin (1794), whose son was Richard (1818) whose son was Martin Richard who was born in 1842 and served in the Civil War. They all ended up in Syracuse, NY. and most were there until they died. There are still some living relatives of mine there today. Martin (1794) & Richard (1818) died in Herkimer County. Martin in 1840 and Richard in 1887. 3. Who are your Van Slykes from Herkimer? Be sure to visit the Historical Society in Herkimer @ 400 North Main St. Herkimer, NY 13350 They are very helpful there. If you are near the Archives in Albany, you will be amazed at the info you can get there. New York State Archives @ Cultural Education Center, Empire State Plaza, Albany NY 12230 If your guy was in the Civil War go to the 11th floor and ask for the "Muster In Records", and I forget which floor the films are on. They have lots of city directories there on film! Jeronimus Hanse Barheit was born between 1654 - 1656. Your Elisabeth/Elizabeth who married Pieter Van Slyke, was born probably Bet. 1764 - 1772 (based on her husband's bapt. year and the birth years of known children) So I'm afraid Jeronimus the brother of Johanna, wasn't the father. I wish I could find a Philip Barheit -- because based on the naming of Peter and Elisabeth's first son John Van Slyke after Peter's father Johannes, and first daughter Helena after Peter's mother Helena/Lena -- I'd say it's a good possibility of Elisabeth's parents being the second son and second daughter's names --- Philip and Elisabeth (although there could be other children born before Elisabeth - children that I don't know about) But so far I've not found a Philip in the Barheit family. -- Lorine McGinnis Schulze * Olive Tree Genealogy (Ships Passenger Lists) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * Images of Ships Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegenealogy@gmail.com

    2. I will have to pursue this. Gg's info says her parents were Hans and Barentje. Hans could be Jeronimus Hanse considering the naming system they have. Thanks.
