Hi all, I have a question... regarding a source listed on Ancrestry.com for the lineage of John RICE, b. 16 June 1773, s/o Samuel RICE m. Agnes MOSBEY. This is the source that was listed: VA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS VOL 3; NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY RECORDS OF BIRTHS 1661-1810 Does anyone know where we can find this publication?? What about the Tax Lists and Census Records for that time frame? Our own data has long indicated that John RICE's place of birth 'should' be in Cumberland Co., due to the 133 ac. land purchase there in 1772, and we're trying to figure out if our Samuel [b. 10 Feb 1744] had resided, or owned land, in these two counties at the same time. We're also trying to trace a RICE family line... thru King William Co., which we feel was the earliest area of VA residence, and finding that a bit difficult due to the loss of so many records. Many thanks for any assistance that you can give, Lisa Grimes KCKS@gorge.net desc. of Samuel RICE, b. 10 Feb 1744 VA - d. 24 Dec 1813... in far away LA. m. 3rd wife, Sarah STRATTON, b. 1759, Bermuda Hundred, Henrico Co. VA d/o William STRATTON m. Sarah "Sally" McCALL We've found this STRATTON line... and we've also Agnes MOSBEY's family, but ... we're still chasing after this very elusive McCALL family. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lisa, I don't know if I can help or not. I have been researching records for Northumberland Co. and Richmond Co. VA from the 1600's through the mid 1700's. I have seen references to the Rice surname when researching the Churchill surname. I do not know if this is your line or not. In Northumberland County Order Book, 1666-1678, there are references to a Dominick Rice. He apparently was a merchant because he had a number of law suits against individuals who were indebted to him. There was also a reference to a Richard Rice. Since, I was not researching this name I did not look for other information on him. There are several books at the Dallas, Texas library that have records from this timeframe. If you would like for me to look for specific records, let me know, and the next time that I go I will look for them. I live about 1 1/2 hours from the library so it may some time before I get back there. I have some Rice's from Reedville VA (Northumberland Co.) in the Hughes' line I'm researching. I don't have much history, except to say my father's sister married Emory Carl Rice. Where the Rice line was prior to that, I'm not sure. Anything on the early Hughes' line from the same area would be greatly appreciated. Lisa, At your closest Library, you should ask your librarian to do a search for this book, or the complete set of books. They were written by Beverley Fleet, a male librarian with the State Library of Virginia, back in the 1930s maybe...and a female also ended up writing some. They realized the value of the printed word and compiled between 8-22? volumes for sevearl counties between them, if my memory serves me well. There are births, some deaths, and other things in them depending on which book you see. If you librarian can find them, she can order them to be "loaned" to you in care of the library. You would only possibly be asked to pay for the postage to return the books to the lending library. Interlibrary loan is the cheapest way to go, if you dont live near a good State library or a good genealogical library that has lots from all states. Many college libraies also have copies of many books, as these are history. Good luck.
