    1. [VANORTHU-L] William Durant
    2. Can someone digging into VERY early records see anything about William Durant (Durand)'s originally granted land on the Rappahannock not far upriver from Chesapeake, which was confiscated by Gov. Berkeley about 1644, then regranted to another? Anything at all in reference to William Durant would be of great interest. Thanks for any input into this. He came to VA with the Bennett group--was elder of the old church on Elizabeth River serving the Dissenters; Berkeley banished him from VA (fined and all property confiscated too) for continuing this service, whereupon was invited by Lord Baltimore to lead his dissenting group to become original settlers in Baltimore's newly acquired Province named Maryland. Durand accepted the proposition based upon guarantee they would be allowed freedom of religion and not be required to sign his usually required oath of loyalty to the established Church, etc. We are interested in locating that tract of land (also name of new grantee) as well as other properties taken, and more about his associates from Northumberland/Westmoreland/Richmond Co.s , And in the OLD Norfolk area - also any details of his family. Anything at all on him or likely family will be most appreciated. Thanks, Ansearch our direct E-mail : Streborjc3@aol.com
