Butch, You and I had discussed HUGHES before. I'm not researching the name in VA but I am a HUGHES from Branchville, MD. so the name sticks with me. While in Richmond County last week, I started recording HUGHES in the cemeteries and have a few if you are interested. These are from the Village, Callao area. Sue

Butch - I'm not in the Hughes line, but I have a book of gravesites at Roseland Cemetery in Reedville, Va. There is a Rufus J. Hughes Sr. listed as dying on Oct 9, 1933. He was born on Mar. 11, 1871. There are also five other Hughes family members buried there. Would any of that help you? Henry. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Butch Hughes" <rbh711@erols.com> To: <VANORTHU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 7:55 AM Subject: Re: [VANORTHU-L] Burgess of Northumberland > Indie, > > Please excuse the intrusion, but you seem to have a good knowledge of certain areas in Northumberland Co. Indie, Please excuse the intrusion, but you seem to have a good knowledge of certain areas in Northumberland Co. Are you, by any chance in the Reedville area? Sandy, the Historical Society is in the same parking lot as the court house. He is in and out daily, so if you write him, he's sure to pass it along to the proper person, and perhaps you'd even get quicker results! I need to know the name of the man that I would that I would write to get copies of wills, estates, etc. I know that Preston Haynie is the one at Hist. soc. Thank you Sandy
Sandy: I'm sure Preston Haynie at the Historical Society can help you. He was my teacher in high school and is a great help to all doing research. Starting my research on HALE in Richmond County, VA although they might have originated in Northumberland. Can anyone relate to these folks: William S HALE's will was read April 1847. He gave his land in the Marshy Swamp area to his son William Henry HALE. He gave his land bordering the land of Hiram BRYANT to his son James David HALE. His daughter Eliza Ann HALE got the furniture. His wife was Ferdela BISCOE (or so it looks). The will was written in the presence of Thomas R HALE, William B HALE and Henry KING. Thanks, Sue

HI Folks, I thought you might enjoy this article by an unknown author about telling the stories of our families. Sharon ____ The Story Tellers . . . We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing It for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. (Unknown Author)
