    3. You may have more luck looking in Westmoreland County. Capt. John Newton, also known as "Marriner" was born in England about 1640, but came to Virginia and died before July 1697 in Westmoreland County. His descendents are still found here and were very prominent in the county's history. I'm in search of parents, siblings or other relatives of Giles Newton who appears in Caroline County as early as 1755. I plan to visit Virginia soon and would appreciate any advance information to help organize my search. Since Caroline County is a "burned records" county, I can only hope to find a link in some earlier or surrounding area. Please help if you can. David F. 3. Hello, This is my first posting to your group. I am looking for any Ingram/Ingraham's from Northumberland Va. or any surrounding counties. I am especially interested in John Ingram/Ingraham born abt. 1820, he supposedly married a Mary Ann French. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give. It seems as though there were many many John Ingram's at that time. My John Ingram and Mary Ann had 1 son, John Washington Ingram in 1849 and possily 1 daughter, Delila/Adele. John Sr. had passed away by 1854. Mary Ann remarried to George Thomas Staub and showed up in the 1860 census of Jefferson County Va.(now Wv.) John Washington Ingram Jr. often went by the name of Staubs, and is buried as Staubs in Jefferson County. There are no records at all for John Ingram Sr. in Jefferson Co. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone may be able to provide. Mary GADDMASS@WEBTV.NET

    3. Hi Indie, I met with Cecile Thrift over the weekend. She lives on Rich Neck Road in the Village area. She is a Clark and proceeded to show me a report that I guess you put together. Sure is a small world, isn't it. Her parents were Charles Ambrose Clark and Ruby Katherine Chatham. By the way, who was Hempsil Clark? I was reading an article in the GSNNV about him and his slave. 3. Hi David, I don't know if this is a connection for you or not... doesn't give his home county...sorry. From "The History of Virginia's Navy of The Revolution" by : Robert Armistead Stewart In May, 1776, the Virginia Convention ordained the appointment of a Board of Naval Commissioners to superintend and direct the navy that was coming into being. The Commissioners Thomas WHITING (styled First Commissioner), John HUTCHINGS, Champion TRAVIS, Thomas NEWTON Jr., and George WEBB held their first meeting in Williamsburg on July 8, 1776, and this board (with some changes in its personel) continued, until its abolition by legislation in May, 1780, to control the affairs of the Navy. I note quite a few BETTS of African ancestry, but I find no connection other than they might have taken the Betts name after they were freed. My Betts line had left Northumberland Co. and gone to Halifax Co. by then, and I am sure quite a few from the original progenitor had gone into NC. Karen

    3. I only picked it up from wills and deeds. My father died in 1964. It only costs $20 @ yr to become a member of the Nothumberland Historical Society, and it includes one of their great bulletins every year. The new bulletin just came out, and it tells of old judges in the county. One was Capt. Thomas Edwin Betts 1831-1886. The Betts family apparently all left the county after the civil war. You can call the Northerland Hist. Soci at (804) 580-8581 or write to them at P. O. Box 221, Heathsville, VA 22473. They do a great job of historical research. Since people left the area, and no one moved in, it is fairly easy to do research of Northumberland ancesters.
