THE GENEALOGY ANGEL by Patty Whitney Gravies It happens suddenly, without warning. You are going about your own business when-----BAM!!------your life is changed forever. You are no longer able to resist the strong desire to do something you have never really thought about doing before. You suddenly want to spend all of your time with books, computers, newspapers, old photographs, and lots and lots of dead people. You start to enjoy going to old courthouses and cemeteries. What has happened to you? Are you crazy? How can your life be changed so drastically so suddenly? Well, you are not really crazy, although some people might think so. You have just been selected to be the "THE FAMILY HISTORIAN." It has become my personal philosophy that there is a genealogy angel out there whose sole job is to select one person (or maybe two) to be in charge of protecting and recording each family's history. It seems that God finds family groups to be very important. After all, a lot of the first part of the Bible deals with who beget whom. (Beget sort of means "Who's yo' mama?"--or thereabouts). Adam and Eve are going to be the only people in Paradise who don't have a belly button. Everyone else was beget by someone. Keeping track of who beget whom was probably not a problem at first. Families sort of stuck together. As the world's population grew and families kept expanding, someone had to keep a record of who belonged with what family. St. Peter probably started keeping records because no one on Earth knew how to read or write yet. Oral histories were passed on and people kept pretty good track of their families' oral histories because there was nothing else to do at night and in the rain and snow but talk about the family. Gradually, though, the world continued to expand. Writing was invented, and then reading was invented so people could understand the writing. Some people wrote down who was their family, but others didn't see the point. As people moved around a lot, sometimes families were separated and family histories were lost. Not everyone knew how to read and write. Oral histories were lost. For hundreds of years family histories were lost when the grim reaper claimed those who held the lore in their heads. Then, I think, St. Peter decided to do something about the shameless lack of respect for roots and family history. Each family was to have someone who would become totally focused on capturing and recording the begets of each family. These Family Historians would have the job not only of collecting the present day family into groups and recording their histories, but also of trying to undo some of the neglect of the past. So, don't be surprised if one day you are minding your own business and you suddenly feel a tap on the shoulder but when you look around there is no one there. It is simply the genealogy angel tapping you on the back to say, "You're it." From that day forward you won't be able to help yourself. You are going to have to take on the very important job of Family Historian. Do it well.

Note: if it is a church cemetery, they should have a plot of the grounds and who has been buried there. You might try the church office of pastor! As a retired pastor, I have been through this many times with church cemeteries. There usually is NO perpetual care and it is left up to the families or survivors who care. Hi all, I'm trying to find any info on a Cooper family who lived in the Wicomico District of Northumberland County, VA... Isaac Cooper and wife Mary Ann. I'm not sure what year they moved to Virginia from the Tyaskin area of Maryland, but they were living in Virginia in 1880, along with two children (Sally & Alexander) from Mary Ann's first marriage. Mary Ann Cooper died there on January 12, 1883. Would there be an obituary at that time? If so, would someone be willing to look it up for me? Thanks, Kat
Cemeteries are under the care of someone....church, family group, municipality, etc....and who ever is in charge of upkeep is ultimately responsible. However, in my experience with cemetery vandalism, etc, in small cemeteries, NO ONE replaces the stones that are damaged ......many times they are simply "thrown" up under a tree or over the hill (I have experienced both of these)...so, stones are replaced by family members or folks who care about them. . Unless you find veterans with destroyed headstones...... and in this case the US Veterans Adm. will replace them free of charge if you send them a filled out form and a copy of the man's service records.... Have you tried to find out who is responsible for this cemetery? That's about the only way you'll find out what is going on; contact them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Whittington" <Susan_Whittington@msn.com> To: <VANORTHU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 6:07 AM Subject: [VANORTHU-L] Destruction of Tombstones at Gibeon Cemetery, Callao, VA > I went to visit Gibeon Cemetery in Callao, VA on Friday. With all the extra cost for their terrorist attacks, I can understand that they are not that interested in additional digital images right now. Give them a break. Lets give them a couple of years to spend their money where they need it. I suggest everyone interested in genealogy and this is a large part of your life to donate money to them. I am looking for any information on Nathaniel Floyd Sr. Based on the 1850 SC Census, Nathaniel was 70; farmer; born in VA; owned 200 acres of land; wife was Sarah H. age 66. They had 3 sons listed for them Andrew J.( b. abt 1818), John, adn Nathaniel Jr. (b. abt 1820) whose wife was also Sarah. They were in the Sumter County in 1850 and then Williamsburg County in 1860. Nathaniel Sr. sold Andrew J. land for $1 an acre and both John and Nathaniel Jr. were listed in the deed. If there is anyone who can help me with Nathaniel Floyd Sr. I would greatly appreciate it.
