Hi List, If you have any info on the above names I'd certainly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Elizabeth
Hi Mike, John Turner died in 1742 and according to his will, purchased the property called Opie's Quarter sometime before then (1742). He bought the property from Rodham Kenner so Rodham Kenner would have been an adult at the time. The Rodham Kenner that you mentioned below was born in 1740 so he would be too young to be the Rodham Kenner mentioned in John Turner's 1742 will. There must have been another Rodham Kenner born sometime prior to about 1720. Can you find one in an earlier generation? Thanks, Pam Michael Gough <mjgough@cablelynx.com> wrote: Pam, I have the following information in my Cralle database (without sources). Could John Turner be the son-in-law of Rodham Kenner? Richard Hawkins 1605 Devon, Eng d. 1667 Westmoreland Co., Va. m. Elizabeth DRAKE ISSUE: Elizabeth m.1650 Westmoreland Humphrey POPE 1630-1684 Richard John Drake Julian Nicholas Jeremiah Humphrey POPE By his own deposition, dated 19 Nov 1673, he was "age 24 or thereabouts". All of his children were minors when he died; All 3 sons chose their brother-in-law as their guardian on 27 Feb 1696. (Humphrey JR came of age later that year). LAWRENCE was under guardianship until 1700. MARY POPE was still under guardianship in 1701/2. Therefore: all the children were born AFTER 1670. Humphrey Pope appears are surety on a bond of John Quisenberry in Rappahannock (now Richmond) county, dated May 12, 1683. The correct date that HUMPHREY POPE received 150 acres in Westmoreland Co by deed from Thomas POPE was 2 Feb 1669. Thought by many to be a son of Col. Nathaniel Pope, but research has repudiated that. See below and http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jwmuse/roots.htm ---Mark Freeman--http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/hawkinsr.html Humphrey Pope was born in 1630 in England or Maryland. He married in 1650 in Westmoreland, VA to Elizabeth Hawkins, daughter of Richard Hawkins. They had the following children: Humphrey, Lawrence, Jemima and Jon. Humphrey died in 1695 in Westmoreland, VA. Richard Hawkins was born about 1605 in Devon, England to an illustrious naval seafaring family. I am researching HALES believed to have come from Northumberland Co., VA, and moved to Johnston Co., NC. My earliest HALES are: Matthew HALES m. Sarah who had a son John b. abt 1690 in Johnston Co., NC. This John married Elizabeth abt. 1725 and had sons Henry b. abt 1736 and John b. abt 1738. This line of HALES eventually moved from NC to Greene Co., AL and Lauderdale Co., MS. I admit I have mostly been "lurking" on this list, trying to become more familiar with the familes from Northumberland Co., since I don't have much information myself. ~~Jan Hale Reed ----- Original Message ----- From: "susan whittington" <susan.whittington@mchsi.com> To: <VANORTHU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 13, 2003 6:45 AM Subject: [VANORTHU-L] Northumberland County, Virginia Research > > Sondra wrote: > I am new to this list and this is the only e-mail I have received and it > is mine. This will was proved in ye County Court of Westmold by ye oathes of Mr Jno Rosier & Mr William Hardich witnesses subscribed thereto. "Nathaniel POPE was a wealthy planter who came to Westmoreland Co. about 1650 from Maryland; his daughter Anne married John Washington, great-grandfather of President George Washington. Nathaniel's son Thomas and John Washington were jointly awarded 1200 acres of land for transporting 24 persons from England to Virginia on 4 September 1661; one of those persons was Humphrey Pope. (See Nell Nugent "Cavaliers and Pioneers", Vol.1, p.449.) Humphrey was not named as an heir of Nathaniel POPE in his will (dated 1659 and proved 20 April 1660) and was almost certainly not a son of Nathaniel, although that relationship has mistakenly been circulated ... . On 2 February 1669/70 Humphrey acquired 150 acres of land from Thomas Pope, a part of his 2,450 acre patent. He resided as a neighbor of Thomas Pope but the relationship is not defined in any of the records I have seen. Humphrey's widow Elizabeth and Lawrence Washington, George's grandfather, were executors of Humphrey's will; William Bridges and John Washington provided security, which further confirms the close association among the families." Chuck, I am also related to the Paynes and Popes but most of my info is from Brooke Payne's book. I descend through EDWARD PAYNE (b.1726), son of William Payne and Alicia Jone. I have further information on Edward that I'd be happy to share. On another note, I was wondering if you could identify a JOHN JONES who is mentioned in the will of EDWARD TURNER (d.1738). The will states "that JOHN JONES and his wife take my daughter ELIZABETH TURNER and bring her up in the best manner as they shall think fit until she is of age". Thanks, Pam chuck owens <cancertech7@yahoo.com> wrote: Hi List, I'm still looking for any info on my ancestors in Northumberland County, VA, especially info on the family of Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay, on Richard Hawkins, on John Payne, Humphrey Pope and Nathaniel Pope, and James Samford/Sanford. I have some info on these people but anymore would be appreciated. I'm especially interested in any documentation which links Edward Jones who married Alicia Samford/Sanford Lunn in August 27, 1679 in Farnham Parish, Richmond County, VA to the Robert Jones family of Fleet's Bay, Wicomico, Northumberland Co., VA. According to Col. Brooke Payne in his classic "Paynes of Virginia", Edward Jones was Robert's son. He states: "Edward Jones's will is dated 1715 (1715) and names his dau. Alicia Payne. He was a descendant of Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay, Nb. Co." The only documentation that I have found so far that corroborates this is: In Beverly Fleet's Northumberland Records, p. 95: An Edward Jones is listed as constable of "little Wicomico" and he was a constable during the time period when Robert Jones was a Justice of the Peace for Northumberland Co. "Jones, Edw. appointed constable for little Wicco: 22 June 1669, 3.64" And the Robert Jones family lived in the Wicomico area in Northumberland Co., VA. So it seems that Constable Edward Jones was probably related to the Robert Jones family. And according to William & Mary College Quarterly, Vol. 23, No. 4 (April 1915) in the article "Mr. Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay, Northumberland County, and Some of His Descendants" by O.A. Keach, Thomas Samford/Sanford, Edward & Alicia Jones's nephew was living with Maurice Jones, son of Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay, in 1721, and Thomas Sanford names his father, Maurice Jones, his wife Judith Jones, and three of their children in his will written in 1721, and probated by Maurice Jones. So it seems most likely Thomas regarded Maurice Jones as family yet the only Sanford-Jones relationship that is documented is that of the marriage of Alicia Sanford with Edward Jones. So it seems like in order for Thomas to have regarded Maurice Jones as family there had to have been a family tie between Edward Jones & Maurice Jones. Any thoughts or help on this subject would be greatly appreciated, Chuck Owens --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Hello Jane, I've been doing a little research on the OPIEs and KENNERs of Northumberland in connection with a TURNER family. In the will of JOHN TURNER (d.1742) he bequeaths to his son Henry Turner a tract called OPIES QUARTER "which I bought from RODHAM KENNER". Can you tell me the location of "Opie's Quarter" and do you have any information that might help me identify this JOHN TURNER? His wife was FEBBIE, his children were: John Jr., Henry, George, Edward, Elizabeth (m. Hayden), Bridget, Monica, Priscilla, and Ann. Thanks, Pam Congs@aol.com wrote: Hello List, My Northumberland family is CRALLE, descending from (Sea Captain) John CRALLE. My lines include OPIE, MATHEW, KENNER, FOX and BALL from the Northern Neck area. I saw the query on the list about the THOMAS CRALLE. Even though I do have several by that name, the one who wrote about him is correct. There are SO MANY Thomas names in that line that it is very confusing. In my line, brothers Thomas and John, both named a son Thomas. They both married the same woman! One married his brother's widow. She was HANNAH KENNER and was widowed four times (or more?). My CRALLE line moved to Nottoway County and for a generation or two the name is also spelled CRAWLEY in that county, but it is the same line. By the time the name got down to my generation, it was back to CRALLE. The (French) name is written to this day with an accent over the e, and tombstones carry the accent also. Some transcriptions have recorded the name as Cralli, thinking the accent was a sloppy dot over a sloppy i. I don't see the name being carried on with that misspelling. I am still searching for information on FIELDING TURNER who was born in Northumberland in 1706, son of JOHN TURNER (b.1671). Fielding's wife was named ANN and I think she may have been ANN LEWIS, daughter of WILLIAM LEWIS (1685-1719). Any information on this Ann Lewis/Turner would be appreciated. I'm also interested in further information on the family of JOHN TURNER who died in 1742. He left wife FEBBIE, and children JOHN JR., HENRY, GEORGE, EDWARD, ELIZABETH (m. Hayden), BRIDGET, MONICA, PRISCILLA , and ANN. Does anyone have any documents proving what happened to these children? And finally, I'm really interested in anything on any Turner that was in Northumberland between 1650 and 1750. Thanks, Pam --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo!
