    1. [VANORTHU-L] Early Virginia Research of Thompson
    2. Ron Thompson
    3. Hello researchers, I am seeking any information about some of my ancestors who lived in the North Umberland, Richmond County areas of Virginia from the early 1600's to present. The surnames I'm researching are Thompson or Thomson or Tomson, Williams, Phillips, Breeden or Breeding, Tucker and quite a few others. Particularly, information that may tie the brothers Thompson(Thomson) Maurice, Paul, George of Berkley Hundred and the London Company to my 6th G.Grandfather George Thompson who married Rebecca Williams the niece of Roger Williams the Governor of Rhode Island in what is now Richmond County but at the time was (old) Rappahannock County then. Any information will be gladly accepted and appreciated. Thank you, Ron Thompson http://ChimeraArts.org monk@wavezcom.com

You asked for anything. Here is what I have accumulated, with no sources available. One of the children of Abraham Beacher (d. Jan. 12, 1801) married a Turner male and fathered Elizabeth Beacham. An unknown Turner (b. abt 1725) married Emma Longworth of St. Mary's County, Md. and fathered Thomas Turner. This Turner family is related to the Rosewells. Bridgett Turner (b. 1700-1720) married Samuel Rust.

    1. [VANORTHU-L] Opie's Quarter; Cralle Land
    2. I have seen a reference to Opie land being purchased by a member of the Cox family. I do not have that info handy, pending an attempted recovery of info on a now defunct PC. In the meantime, the Cox family, which married with the Cralles, held land located on both sides of the Yeocomico River, in both Westmoreland and Northumberland Counties. By the 19th century, the Cox family and related Cralles also had land in Richmond County. Find the intersection of those three counties and you will find their land.

    1. Re: [VANORTHU-L] Riddles of Maryland
    2. Have seen several instances of same person or family being "transported into a colony" when rights to land grants had already been given for their transport to another colony - we first figured they must have travelled back to Great Britain and again immigrated, but research showed they simply had travelled (by water) to enter the other colony. By this manner , some individuals may have been "transported" to additional colonies!, and even received land rights more than once for transportation to the same colony ( recall one as headright of ship's captain , and at later time counted for his own transportation upon additional entries). Makes one wonder what the British policies were on this??, but we never tried to look up that point. Of course the owners or proprietors were eager to get more people coming in to settle their grants, producing more in taxes, goods for trade etc, so this may not have been undesirable or evasion of any regulation, so long as there was development and economic growth for them and the crown. 2. Do you know if Samuel Withers of Talbot Co MD was related to your Withers family? Many names of the colonists in Co.'s of eastern shore of Md. also appear in VA Co.'s near the Chesapeake in those early days. Would like to hear from any Withers searchers who may have been kin of this early Samuel b before 1672, was Talbot Co official, inherited from his grandfather William Durand who was an original holder of 800 acres in Northumberland. Thanks, Ann

    3. Hooray, I'm glad to see this LIST come to life. Was beginning to think no one was interested in NU genealogy. Hi Susan, I see there is at least one other Md. researcher looking for names that show up on both sides of the Potomac. I have found a John Riddle being transported into Lancaster Co. in 1782 and my John Riddle is in Charles Co. Md. in 1784. What is the chance of these two guys being one and the same. How common was it for transportees to Va. to jump across the river. The Md. Headright System ended in the late 1680's so what reason would the immigrants have for landing in Va. and then quickly going to Md. after that date? Susan, It sounds like you are working on a similar situation. I didn't find John, the transportee in NU, but I did find some others who landed with him in Lancaster Co. later in NU. If anyone has knowledge of other instances of " immigrating across the river", I would like to know about it. Hugh Brown
