    2. Hi Marcia, People in Bertie county, Gates, Hertford and a lot of the counties of NC came to Norfolk county for work in the shipyard here..they traveled back and forth a great deal, some owned land in both VA and NC... the city of Chesapeak has all the very old marriage bonds and early deed information, plus land grant information at their courthouse. Send a letter to Chesapeake Courthouse and ask for an index to the marriage bonds for ancestor...once you get this paper, check out what the wives last names were..then send for the will index for both surnames after you have run them up on the census to see when they disappear from the roll..(that way you'll have an idea where and when they might have died) and send to the "origianl" county for the index of wills for both surnames... this is true of any county they might have died in... in any state. In VA and NC the counties changed names..so you have to contact the county that was the first county in these states..in the case of VA Norfolk county houses all the early VA records..but you need them to send you and "index". Also, when the male head of household died, the children were considered "orphans" even if they had a mother living..so usually a member of the family was given the guardianship of the children..this could have been someone on the mother's side or the father's side..so you need to check wills of both sides to find additioinal info on your ancestors. Hope this helps.
