Susan, the only suggestion I have, is to go to the white pages with aol...put in Portsmouth, VA..type in Spear. Then do the same thing for Norfolk, VA and type in Spear. Print out all the Spear listings. It will cost you some money, but make long distance phone calls and ask if anyone is a living descendant of your man. I have done this same thing. It is expensive. But I have found 4 famalies that are willing to talk to me about their ancestors. And I have to tell you that it was the most beneficial thing I have ever done...honestly. People are usually willing to talk on Sunday afternoons on the phone and I have gained sooooo much information on different lines that way. Also, you might want to contact the Norfolk county Genealogy/Historical Society and offer to pay one of their members to search for your descendants for you. Sometimes people will do this for a fee that is not out of this world in price range. I sure hope this helps you some. I think Dee Smith posted the address for the Norfolk county Historical Society on the page previously. It is worth a try to try these things.
