Sorry Cristy. I did have a mention of Aaron Hudgins in the "Norfolk County 1844 Tithables" book we did. That is probably yours. He was listed as being in Deep Creek claiming 1 poor tax (meaning he was a white male over 16) and 1 horse. He didn't own land. He was reported in the Elizabeth River Parish/ Portsmouth Parish section of the tithe list. Not much info I'm afraid. Forgot to mention I also have extant Admin Bonds 1711-1850 which tells you a lot about the people..... - Administrator for James Smith (1797) was John Smith with security by Caleb Wilson - Administrator for Samuel Smith (1773) was James Jolliff with surety provided by Wm Bressie, Patrick Mackey and Thomas Bressie There are 40 admin bonds for a Smith, but these are the two which jumped out with your names on them. James Jolliff (1795) had an administrator (with will annexed) of Josiah Jolliff as either James Webb the executor didn't serve or didn't complete the job. It was listed as unadministered by James Jolliff, Jr. Sureties were Richard Jolliff and Richard Smith This book is available for sale at the Family Research Society of Northeastern NC http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncfrsnnc/ along with several other Norfolk County books. Yes, I have Will Books I, II and III (Wingo/McVey/Brewster) Book I has wills for Butler, John, Josiah, Peter and Samuel Book II has wills for Charles, George, Henry, John, Sarah, Solomon (2) and William Book III has wills for Butler, George, James, John, Mathias, Richard, Sarah and William Obviously too many to cite them all here. The John in Book II died ca 1778 with sons Wilson, Thomas, Lemuel. Wife Judath. Daughters Hanner (Smith) and Elizabeth Rose. John Rose the witness was probably related to Elizabeth. Samuel Smith and James Hodgis were the executors. The John in Book I died ca 1766 leaving sons George (exec), Henry, John, Peter, Samuel. Daughters Mary Halstead and Elizabeth Spivy. Grandsons John & Malachi (sons of Henry) and grandau Patty Smith. His wife was Mary Smith. Josiah, a merchant, dc 1871 leaving son John and dau Sarah. He also left something to friend Frances Condon. The execs were John Smith and Joseph Hutchings Samuel, the mariner, dc 1756 mentioned his father Thomas in Nottingham Shire England as the only relative. Sharon, Wow! Thank you so much. The John Smith I was looking for was married to a Mary and was the father of Samuel (who married Elizabeth Jolliff). So it looks like it could possibly be the John in book I. This is my mother's direct paternal line. Would it be too much to ask for a scan of the will (if you have a scanner)? My email is kennethehempel@yahoo.com. Thank you again. This is very exciting. Best regards, Kenneth PS I'm afraid my own Norfolk resources are limited but I do have a copy of Marriages of Norfolk County 1706-1792 right now (if you don't have it and wanted any lookups). ________________________________ From: Sharon Gable <sharongable@hughes.net> To: vanorfol@rootsweb.com; vanorfol-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 3:15:14 PM Subject: Re: [VANORFOL] anyone have Norfolk Cty will book 1 (1755-1772) and orII (1772-1788)? Thanks to all who replied to me question. I really appreciate it. As far as I know they were married in Norfolk (city). I checked the Library of Virginia and they were not listed. I live in NC and cannot get to the courthouse. Does the application have to be filled out by me or can someone else do it for me?
