However when I responded my reply went to the Digest so maybe that's why you didn't see. Instead of clicking reply since I am on the Digest, guess I need to send to the list. So sorry. Here it is! The Society sponsors historical and genealogy programs, publishes and sells some good books on local history, volunteers in the Wallace Memorial Room (The Wallace Memorial Room is part of the Chesapeake Central Library at 300 Cedar Rd. that emphasizes the City of Chesapeake), and partners with other organizations on projects of local interest ie Civil War Days in Sept., Battle of Great Bridge(Rev. 2. Susan, the only suggestion I have, is to go to the white pages with aol...put in Portsmouth, VA..type in Spear. Then do the same thing for Norfolk, VA and type in Spear. Print out all the Spear listings. It will cost you some money, but make long distance phone calls and ask if anyone is a living descendant of your man. I have done this same thing. It is expensive. But I have found 4 famalies that are willing to talk to me about their ancestors. And I have to tell you that it was the most beneficial thing I have ever done...honestly. People are usually willing to talk on Sunday afternoons on the phone and I have gained sooooo much information on different lines that way. Also, you might want to contact the Norfolk county Genealogy/Historical Society and offer to pay one of their members to search for your descendants for you. Sometimes people will do this for a fee that is not out of this world in price range. I sure hope this helps you some. I think Dee Smith posted the address for the Norfolk county Historical Society on the page previously. It is worth a try to try these things. 2. I have the book on decendants of William and Mary Brough Rowe written by R.O.Godley. I was glad to find someone researching the Brough, Rowe, and Stringer families. The Peed and Stringer families can be found in Craven co.,NC. My ancestor,James Rowe, was born ca1759,and probably a decendant of this William and Mary Rowe. Wm.and Mary Rowe had the following children: Robert,Coleman,Kiteley,John,William, and Mary. The book mostly follows John's decendants. Wm.Roe left a will in 1721. Norfolk co.,Va. Would love to exchange info with you . The book has some info on the Brough and Bossell family. I am interested in finding more on the Stringer connection. There was a James Roe who wrote his will 1737 in Craven co.,NC and named Francis Stringer executor. Carrie Rowe Burgaw,NC

    1. [VANORFOL-L] Cities in Norfolk Co.
    2. Hi all, Picked this up from the Southside list. Susan, think this will answer your questions about where records are located. As the other Susan told us, you will need to know the dates and where people were located in order to know where the records are. Your guardian records from 1860 would be in the Norfolk CITY court records. Message from the list: Norfolk, VA was an independent city as of 1845. The city did not move, the boundaries and form of government did! Virginia has a habit of forming independent cities smack in the middle of perfectly good counties. from "Hornbook of Virginia History,"Fourth Edition, ed. by Salmon & Campbell, Library of Virginia Publication, c. 1994: "Norfolk [City] was located in Norfolk County, which is now extinct. The city took its name from the former home of an early settler, Adam Thoroughgood, who was a native of the county of Norfolk, England. Norfolk was established in 1680 by an act of assembly. It was incorporated as a borough in 1736 and as a city in 1845. Norfolk was enlarged in 1906 by the annexation of the town of Berkeley." "Norfolk County (extinct) probably was named by Adam Thoroughgood, a local resident, for his native county in England. It was formed from Lower Norfolk County in 1691. Norfolk County became extinct in 1963, when it was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk to form the city of Chesapeake. The county seat was Portsmouth." "Chesapeake, which is named for the Chesapeake Bay, comprises the former Norfolk County and the former city of South Norfolk. It was formed by court order in 1963 by a merger of these two entities, both of which thereby became extinct." "Portsmouth was located in Norfolk County, which is now extinct. It was named by its founder, William Crawford, for the English seaport and was established in 1752. Portsmouth was incorporated as a town in 1836 and as a city in 1858." 1. [VANORFOL-L] Records..
    2. Hi Dee, Thanks for the info!>smile< Can you do me a great big favor Dee? Can you call the cities and find out who has what books and from what years to what years, especially for guardianship records? I really need information on guardianship records in the city of Norfolk for the year 1860 to 1875. My great grand dad was placed into an orphanage and I have no way to trace our entire family without knowing what books they house there. My ancestor was placed into an orphanage in what would be the downtown area of what is now the city of Norfolk. When I called the Chesapeake courthouse, they told me that they did not have those books and that Norfolk would have them. I really need to know who has these guardianship records, as you might imagine. By the way, how do we join the Norfolk county Historical Society, do you know? Do they have an address? Thanks a bunch, Susan --------------------------------------------------------------- THE PAST EXPLAINS THE PRESENT JENKINS/DAVIS/GAYLE/SMITH/MURRAY/ GODWIN/PARKER/WHITEHEAD/FRAZIER/CURRIN --------------------------------------------------------------- ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 1. [VANORFOL-L] Re: VANORFOL-D Digest V99 #14
    2. To Susan, Susan, and all, It does get confusing on the various cities in Norfolk County. The Norfolk County Historical Society has a concise 2 paragraphs with some dates that may help clarify as follows: "In 1636, less than three decades after the settling of Jamestown, New Norfolk was formed from Elizabeth City County, one of the nine original shires of the Colony of Virginia. In 1637, New Norfolk was divided into Lower Norfolk County and Upper Norfolk County. Lower Norfolk County encompasses the area that is now the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach. Lower Norfolk County's first court was held on May 15, 1637, and was presided over by Captain Adam Thoroughgood. Chesapeake is the most direct descendent of Lower Norfolk County. The records housed in care of the Chesapeake's Clerk of the Circuit Court are the oldest records held by any of the four cities that were once Lower Norfolk County: they date back to 1637 and the first court held in the jurisdiction." Hope this helps. Dee

    2. Hi Susan, In 1920..Portsmouth was in Norfolk county, VA..but it was it's own city..it was the county seat of Portsmouth in those years...but it was still a part of Norfolk county, if you are looking for information for that year..you need to check the city of Portsmouth..after a time (please check the Norfolk county evolution..cause I can't remember the dates here)..the city of Chesapeake took over part of the city of Portsmouth and also the city of Norfolk VA..the city of Chesapeake came in and took the records from both cities, and now the city of Chesapeake has certain records..the city of Portsmouth has certain records(not many)..and the city of Norfolk has certain records..(should mention that also Princess Anne county was a part of Norfolk county at one time..then Princess Ann county became what is now the city of Virginia Beach...also originally there was Elizabeth city county that was the first settled part of Norfolk county..and now those records are in the city of Hampton, VA).. I know this is confusing! I have lived here for 50 years and am just now learning about the county split ups..=) In other words, if you are looking for someone who lived in a certain section of Norfolk VA say, back in 1870..well you have to know "exactly where they lived..with an old city of Norfolk VA city directory..that and the help of the man at the Kirn Memorial Library named Robert Kinney.." because even if your ancestor was living in a part of Norfolk where the convention center is located "now" (called Scope..)..then you have to go to Chesapeake city now for "those" records. I'm telling you more than you want to know..mainly for one reason..if you need to search anyone else in other years..for Norfolk county..then this might help you or whoever reads this post..but for 1920 the records for Portsmouth would now be in the city of Portsmouth...if I have mixed things up and anyone can add/subtract from what I have posted..please feel free to correct me=) Susan in Tidewater VA >X-Message: #1 >Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 15:16:15 EST >From: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Message-ID: <[email protected]> >Subject: [VANORFOL-L] Norfolk and Portsmouth... >Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII >Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit > >I'm a little confused are Norfolk and Portsmouth in the same county? >Were >they in the same county in 1920 when the 1920 census was taken.
