    1. Re: [VANORFOL-L] [Fwd: Norfolk Court House]
    2. As I read your message, it seems that this person is interested in the Norfolk 'County' Courthouse. Since Norfolk County no longer exists, the Place to write would be the Chesapeake Circuit Court. Some records for Norfolk County may also be in Portsmouth, just depends on where in Norfolk Co. the person lived. Some parts of Norfolk Co. were annexed into Portsmouth. But, on the whole, Norfolk County is now the City of Chesapeake. In this whole phone book I see NO address. But my best guess would be, Chesapeake Circuit Court Probate Dept. Municipal Center Chesapeake, VA 23320 Since there is only one Municipal Center, I think that it would probably be safe to say that the post office knows where it is. The main Complex is located off of 300 Cedar Road in Ches. But there are various streets within the complex. So, you might want to call, first. The phone number for the Chesapeake Circuit Court is 1-757-382-6111 Their FAX number is -1-757-382-8750 If I remember correctly, the cost of a copy of a marriage record, will, etc. is $1.00 or $2.00 per copy. But, it has been awhile since I was there. They were undergoing a good deal of construction and parking was hard to find. Jan

    1. [VANORFOL-L] GenExchange Update
    2. The April issue of the Exchange has been released and will be posted to the GenExchange archives in a few days. Previous issues of the Exchange can be located at http://www.genexchange.com/gesr/archive.cfm. It was another steallar month at the GenExchange and I thought I'd share some stats from the current issue of the Exchange with you all. These stats normally appear in the Geeks Corner column of the Exchange and covers total, and new record counts for the databases for the preceeding month. The GenExchange has been growing (database wise) at a rate of 3-5MB per week, and has been receiving 10-20% more page hits than the previous month since early last Fall. Consequently the GenExchange finally broke the 1,000,000 page hit per month plateau thisa month by a fair margin. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for supporting the GenExchange, and for helping us give back to the community that has help us all so much. For two years now Joanne and I have worked hard on the GenExchange but none of it would have been possible if it weren't for you all. Thank you! 1. [VANORFOL-L] GenExchange - County & State Contacts
    2. Due to the many questions regarding our Sunday announcement I would like to add some additional comments. Many questions can already be answered by reading material posted to our Frequently Asked Questions page at http://www.genexchange.com/faq.cfm, our About the GenExchange page at http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm, and our How can I help page at http://www.genexchange.com/volunteering.cfm. I would suggest that anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of our project to start there. In addition, several announcements have been posted in the past regarding our plans, and can also be found in past issues of our monthly newsletter located at http://www.genexchange.com/gesr/archive.cfm, and in some online articles written about the GenExchange. There is a list of the most recent posted in the lower left of the main page of the GenExchange at http://www.genexchange.com Briefly, the GenExchange has been in operation for over two years and has grown tremendously since its beginning. We work with some pretty outstanding people who are completely selfless and have nothing in mind but to help the researchers out there. I hold myself to be very lucky to work with such a group as that. We do not view the GenExchange as being in competition with anyone, and I would not characterize what we have been doing for two years as reinventing anything. The GenExchange is all about providing free access to raw genealogical data and nothing more and was the first genealogy web site to provide the type of service that it does, although we’re beginning to see other sites adopt the same format which is truly outstanding. The GenExchange will continue to do the very best it can for the researcher and will continue with its long planned project to allow dedicated genealogists to adopt existing state GenExchange pages; allow dedicated genealogists to adopt county GenExchange web sites; and to eventually create Country GenExchange sites which will be similarly organized as the USGenExchange. Anyone interested in adopting a New York county should see http://www.genexchange.com/counties.cfm?state=ny As announced on Sunday, Virginia and Iowa will be opened for adoption in April with other states being opened at a rate of one to two per month after that. 1. [VANORFOL-L] GenExchange - County & State Contacts
    2. We're looking for a few good people! As we've discussed in the previous two issues of our monthly newsletter--the Exchange--we're implementing our plan to open county web sites for every county in the United States, and to pass responsibility for those counties to volunteers who want to become project members and who are dedicated to our goal of free access to genealogical data online. We're also looking for volunteers to administer the State GenExchange pages. For more information, please visit our About the GenExchange page. The implementation of this plan has been in the works for some time, and will take some time to fully implement. Consequently we will open individual states up for adoption at a rate of one to two per month. Currently only New York is open for adoption. Virginia and Iowa will be opened for adoption during April. A schedule of state openings will be posted at the GenExchange soon, and will be published in an upcoming edition of our monthly newsletter--the! Exchange. 1. Re: [VANORFOL-L] Virginia Beach
    2. Va beach has always been an independent city. It was first very small and was where the hotels and the boardwalk are located. In 1960's the County of Princess Anne, which had no city within it's boundary, merged with the City of VaBeach. They had the choice to call it either Princess Anne or Va Beach, but chose Va Beach. The same is true for the City of Norfolk, it is not within a county, and never has been. Jan
