1. [VANORFOL-L] Clarks and related families
2. Bill and Cindy
3. Hello everyone, I'm part of a group of people, researching Clarks and all their related families. We've constructed 6 webpages giving (Direct Line Descendancy's) of the lines from which some of us descend and/or are researching. It's at http://members.tripod.com/ClarkCousins/ (Note: Many of us are cousins who have found each other online while researching Clarks.) If you're researching a Clark line, please drop by and see if we have any information on your Clark line. You might even be another cousin. If you only have one Clark in your family, you might want to drop by and try to find out if you're related to any of us. Keep in mind these are not complete charts, they contain only the basic direct line descendancy of that Clark researcher. If you feel you may have a connection to any of the lines, please contact us at [email protected] If your Clark line isn't there already, you can contribute your own Clark line for posting, if you like. It might help you find new family info or maybe even meet a cousin you never knew you had. 1. [VANORFOL-L] CENSUS TAKER POEM
2. CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown --part1_f9823a7d.24840db2_boundary--

2. I just heard about the information listed below, but would like to learn more to confirm. Would someone please help me to confirm, and find out what happen to these 10 children. I understand this incident happen doing the summer months of 1935, maybe August. Any information received would be greatly appreciated. James Aaron Chandler was employed by the Carpenter Construction Company in 1935. He was accidentally killed while working on a bridge. His wife Emma Jenkins Chandler died a few years later on February 18, 1937. They were the parents of 10 children. Emma's mother who was also named Emma and her husband Abram Jenkins raised the children in their home in a section of Norfolk, VA called Titustown. Some of the children were raised as Jenkins, the surname of their grandparents.

2. Does anyone have any information re: RICHARD PEBWORTH who married Susan B. Norriss in 1819 in P.A. Co.? They had 2 children who grew to adulthood. Martha Ann Pebworth was born ca 1820, P.A. Co., and married Richard Land in Norfolk, Jan. 1, 1839. James Norris Pebworth was born 1831, Princess Anne Co. and married Mary Cornelia Dozier, dau. of Absalom S. Dozier and Mary Ann (Campbell) In 1808, Richard Pebworth was owed $8.12 by Thomas Pebworth, decd. and Sally Pebworth. 1783, Thomas Pebworth had married SARAH LEWELLING and had 5 people living in their household. Nov. 18, 1807 there was an appraisement of Thomas Pebworth's estate and Richard Pebworth purchased several items from his estate. 1834 - the heirs to property of Sarah Pebworth were: RICHARD PEBWORTH SARAH PEBWORTH, JR. WILLIAM B. PEBWORTH (1797-1835. He married ANN WARREN in 1821) THOMAS WILKINS (A Nancy Pebworth married Thomas Wilkens 1815) 1783, Thomas Pebworth and Sarah (Lewelling) are listed as having 5 people in their household. In 1785 they lived in Little Creek Precinct and had 9 people living in their household. I have found William (1775-1820) who in 1796 married Susanna Benthal; Abigail who in 1798 married Thomas Burgess; Martha how in 1796 married Wm. Benthall; and James, Jr. who in 1791 married Sarah Whitehurst. 1799, Thomas Pebworth sold 15 acres to John Thorowgood, Sr. Does anyone know anything about any of these people? Thanks in advance. Does anyone know the name of Susan's mother? The B. could stand for her mother's maiden name. Any information re: Susan, James aor Sowell will be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi; I just got this query and am wondering if you guys can help him with his family, From: Randy Sullivan [email protected] I got your name from the VA GenWeb site for Norfolk Co. and I'm hoping you will be able to help me. Family lore has it that my g-g-grandfather (James M. Sullivan) arrived from Ireland with his father and siblings at Norfolk sometime in the 1810's or 1820's. He is believed to have grown up around Norfolk. I know that by 1850 he was living in Georgia near where I grew up. I'll be visiting Norfolk soon on business and would like to take the opportunity to research records that are available locally and are likely to help with uncovering more information about my g-g-grandfather. I would appreciate any recommendations you could make about the best places for me to go. Are there good sources in the Norfolk area or am I better off looking in Richmond? 1. Re: [VANORFOL-L] William Bell in Norfolk, Va. area ca 1880
2. I came across this today: This may not be your's - this fellow isn't married, but since I couldn't find a follow up story on it, one never knows -- It caught my eye while I was looking for another obituary. Sunday December 3, 1882 Norfolk Virginian Norfolk, VA Sad and Probably Fatal Accident A most unfortunate accident occurred yesterday morning about 10 oclock on the Indian River Turnpike, about two miles from this city. A young man by the name of William Bell was engaged in moving the furnituar of a lady, using for the pupose a sprine wagon with a foot board. He had gotten down twice to have a shot at some partridges, and upon getting into the wagon the last time allowed the butt of the gun, which was a breach loader, charged with No 8 shot, to rest on the foot board; with the barrel between his knees. The jolting of the wagon caused the gun to slip from the foot board and the hammer struck upon the rim binding it. This caused the load to explotde and the young man received the charges in his right side, a little below the waist. The shot ranged upward and entering the abdominal cavity, lodged in and in the neighborhood of the liver. He was removed first to a little store near by, and after remaining there a little while was taken to the house of Dr. Barton Pitts, for medical attendance. Subsequently, it was decided to call in Dr. Thomas Ward, of this city and he was accordingly summoned. The physicians, after making careful examination decided there was no hope for the patient, though he might live for 24 hours or more. The young man is about 22 years of age and is unmarried and resides on the Cottage Toll Bridge Road, opposite second bridge. He was still alive at nightfall of yesterday, though, as stated no hopes were entertained of his recovery. Jan Jan's Page
