according to today's Virginian pilot by Patrick Wilson Virginia's earliest compilation of records on African Americans has been indexed and is now online. the Virginia freedmen's bureau records are temporarily available at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) volunteers digitized the records working with the black history museum and cultural center of VA. viewers can search the free collection by clicking "search records" then "record search pilot" starting in 1865 freedmen's bureau documented the identities and family ties of many of the 4 million freed slaves. the bureau was phased out in 1872 hope this helps Kristina _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com) _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/) _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/) **************Looking for love this summer? Norfolk, VA (March 11, 2009). On March 11, 2009, Norfolk Public Library re-opened all services at its interim main library, the Norfolk Main Library, at 235 E. Plume Street in Downtown Norfolk. Since January 3, 2009, the services available at Norfolk Main Library have been access to the computer area in the basement and a staffed book return. The former main library, Kirn Memorial Library, is now in the process of being demolished to make way for Light Rail Transit. Services now available at Norfolk Main Library include a book return, the Sargeant Memorial Room Historical and Genealogical Collection, the Youth Services Department, a computer area featuring 60 computers, Periodicals, Government Documents, and a collection of popular fiction, non fiction, DVD's and CD's. The building, known as the former Seaboard Building, will serve as a temporary main library until the new main library complex is constructed. Frank Batten Sr., long-time chairman of Landmark Communications, has committed a $20 million contribution to the construction of a new main library complex in downtown Norfolk. The announcement was made during a press conference on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 by Mayor Paul Fraim, who described the gift as "the largest in the city's history." for the rest of the article see: _Press Release - March 3, 2009_ (http://www.npl.lib.va.us/press/releases/mar11_2009.html) In a message dated 4/27/2009 10:20:49 A.M. Thanks for posting, Kristina. I spent a lot of fun time going over all they offer. Can someone tell me where the temporary library is again. I know it was posted, but I didn't think I'd be going that way any time soon, now I will be in Norfolk in May and if I have time would like to visit the library to check out some newspaper obits.
