I am looking for seveal BRUCEs in or around Norfolk. I do not know if it would be Norfolk County or Norfolk the City. However, I am looking information relating to: 1: GEORGE BRUCE who advertised in the VIRGINIA GAZETTE, dated April 20, 1775, which reads "The subscriber begs leave to inform the public that he now commands the sloop Agnes, about 1800 bushels burthen, a prime sailor, & well built, with good accomodation for passengers; he proposes to follow the country trade in common, & for the most part, Rappahannock River. He will be humbly obliged to all gentlemen who choose to honor him with their commands; he proposes to make it his delight & study to oblige all who confide in his integrity. Signed GEORGE BRUCE. N.B. He will never refuse a convenient freight to New York or Philadelphia & may at any time be heard of by directing a few lines to the care of Mrs. Ann WINTERTON in Norfolk." I am interested in knowing who this George BRUCE was, and any information relating to the sloop AGNES. There was an Ann BRUCE in Richmond Co VA who married a WINTERTON. Would this be the same Ann WINTERTON mentioned above? The second BRUCE I am interested in is John BRUCE who advertised in the VIRGINIA GAZETTE dated 1 March 1783 as follows: "John BRUCE at Norfolk advertises for sale a vessel to be launched about the end of March." Because both of these BRUCEs were involved with ships, is there a relationship between the two? Thank you very much for your time and information. Bea Hudson
The burials in many of the cemeteries in Norfolk Co., VA have been published. Check the Library of Congress Catalog (www.loc.gov) or the LDS library catalog (www.familysearch.org) for the details. Elmwood cemetery in the city of Norfolk was very helpful in looking up burials when we visited there. It's an old cemetery. There are also burials at St. Paul's church downtown. Has anyone found a list of cemeteries in Norfolk? Particularly those prior to 1900? Thanks, Steve
Prior to 1900 there was Elmwood and Cedar Grove. The interment records are in the Norfolk Public Library - Sargeants Memorial Room St. Paul's Episcopal church yard was also an early cemetery. I have a list of some of the people buried there on my homepage. St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery is also an older cemetery. Sometimes people would bury their loved ones right on the farm. In Princess Anne County (now Va Beach) you can drive along the roadside and see family plots. Check the St. Paul's page on my site: Jan's place
Walter, The farthest that I can go back is Talbot Harrison born about 1825 supposedly in Virginia. Talbot Hall Harrison and Mary Frances Edwards lived in Isle of Wight County and eloped and were married in Gates County, North Carolina about 1850. I cannot locate any siblings or the parents of Talbot Harrison. Several variations of his name are: Talbert Harrison, Talbert Harriss, Talbot Harrison, Talbot Harriss, T. H. Harriss and T. H. Harrison. Mary Frances Edwards parents lived in Isle of Wight County in 1850, so my guess is that Talbot Hall Harrison's family maybe lived in North Carolina. One of Talbot and Mary's sons moved to Portsmouth between 1900 and 1910, John D. Harrison, I believe the rest of the family stayed in Isle of Wight and Nansemond County. Although, in one of the census years, 1880 or 1900, Martha Sarah Harrison Winborne (Talbot's daughter) and her husband Thomas Parker Winborne, and Angie Etta Harrison Winborne (Talbot's daughter) and her husband J. R. Winborne are not on the Virginia census in any county. Maybe they were in North Carolina. Hopes this helps some. Terry M. Johnson

Hoping someone can help me find out what happened to John BRICKELL, who married Eliza HUDSON, in 1775, Norfolk, VA? Probably his father was also named, John BRICKELL, and mother, Martha. Would like to know what Martha's surname was. And what happened to Eliza (HUDSON) BRICKELL. Did they have children? Many pieces to this puzzle to still fit together and would appreciate any clue or lead. Thanks so much. Marcia Bourdeau 7720 Lakeshore Port Huron, MI 48059 [email protected]

10/26/99 I am looking for information on a Rachel Collins who ran a boarding house in Portsmouth at 39 Court St. in 1900 - she was the widow of Daniel Collins, who apparently was a ranking official in the Navy - also, would like to know if 39 Court St., in Portsmouth is now 339 Court St. - if so, it is the same house. Hi! I'm a new subscriber, and am searching for information on JOHN CORNISH WILKINSON. He was born in S.C. somewhere around 1918 and attended school in VA. He worked on the Norfolk, Va Pilot, perhaps was the editor. He married someone from Va., and they had a daughter, Lillian Virginia, called Lily V. by her family. Cornish, as he was called, was my mother's first cousin. He is dead now, but I would like any info I can find on him. I would especially like to be put in touch with his daughter, Lily, so that she could get in touch with my 81-year old mother. Thanks for any help you can give. Deborah
