    1. [VANORFOL] Family Bibles
    2. Barbara McMahon
    3. Greetings All: I live in California and am a member of DAR. Our California State Regent's Project for the next two years to digitalize family bibles and make them available to all. I'm the chair for my chapter and it occurs to me other states may not be doing this, but I think it's a great idea. So if you have a cherished family bible with names/dates and would like to be part of this project, please contact me off this list: bmcmahon@volcano.net and I'll give you the info on what to scan, how to send scans to me, and we will include your bibles in our project. Copies of information will be given to the DAR Library in Washington DC, local libraries in California, and, I feel sure, Salt Lake's FHL. I'd be happy to send to local historical societies wherever folks are. I have already scanned the old one I have and sent to VA State Library. I know they also have a Bible program trying to get copies of all Virginia family bibles. Best, Barbara McMahon

    1. [VANORFOL] September Update
    2. Hi, everyone, Hope everyone had a safe labor day and everyone's enjoying back to school............... I have started about 5 projects at once. I have also discovered the micro-film at my library. this could take YEARS............ 1. obits and marriages from the norfolk virginian have been added to _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com/virginiarecords.html_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com/virginiarecords.html) by year.................................... starting with 1866 forward. I am currently finishing up 1874. if anyone has obits from any other county in virginia from prior to 1900 and would like to share. please email me privately. 2. I am working on norfolk CITY marriages _ this one will take years.......... 3. I can access princess anne county marriages from 1724-1936. HOWEVER THERE ARE HUGE GAPS in what's avail. especially in the early years. see the website for more details. 4. Most of you know Anne Malings book on wills and deeds. but i recently noticed she skips pages, mostly these pages contain inventories and other small items. because i was on a special project for someone i started with deed book 7, and have posted the copy of the originial index on the website, give me the name deed book number and page number (and county) and i'll get a copy for you for free of the will or other transaction and scan it. if you want a physical copy and a translation then i charge. but just to copy and scan it for you, that's free. (keep in mind the machine's quality at my library is not very good)They have had budget issues and a few of the machines are out of toner...............and there are only 2 that have semi good quality and it's a fight for those. they are very popular machines. so it may take a couple of weeks. So the index to deed book 7 has been posted. except "c". i've got it and i was experimenting with excel and it didn't work. (rootsweb is not user friendly).. . _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/) 5. i was also looking into the minute books, the few i have looked at are not indexed and could also take years.................... there also have been other updates to the site. I think that's about it for now. According to sources, they say the cemetery was in use in the 1970's and the DAR book was done in 1979. thanks Kristina _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com) _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/)

    1. [VANORFOL] Cemetery Favor Question
    2. . Hi, everyone, I have a question, I have a person whom I am corresponding with who claims there is a 3rd Cemetery in Chesapeake on the corner of Eason and Benefit Road. I have two cemeteries noted both online and in the Tombstone Inscription of Norfolk County that the DAR did in 1979. one Benefit and Buskey with 8 graves mostly Easons The other has 4 graves on is supposed to be on Mitchell Farm eastern side of Buskey Road But she's claiming there is a 3rd cemetery on Eason and Benefit. Anyone living over there would like to volunteer to go take a look and possibly take a few pictures and get an interment listing. It would take me over an hour to get there from the beach. I know it's possible, but I'm wondering why the DAR didn't spot it way back in 1979. As her ancestor was buried in 1970. So it's a fairly new cemetery way back in 1979. Also if anyone has any thing they would like to contribute to any of the sites, feel free to email me thanks. Kristina ps. i've got virginia obits done up to 1872 on _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com) _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/) _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/) _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com)

    2. Sharon Gable
    3. Most Family Search items are abstracts or transcriptions. Is that the case here? If so look at the original source and see what it says. Even on original sources sometimes items are "assumed." For example, they might just list the word "city" instead of stating Norfolk or Portsmouth. My guess would be they were referring to Bank STREET, not an area. Check the 1880 census and see if he lived on Bank Street. City records often referred to streets where the person lived, while for county folks they referred to an area since the county didn't name their streets during that time frame. 1. Re: [VANORFOL] 1855 marriage question
    2. Sharon Gable
    3. Further research showed the marriage was in Elizabeth City County VA which is the present day City of Hampton rather than in Elizabeth City Pasquotank County NC. NC would not recognize a license from VA, but they would of course recognize a marriage once it occurred. Each county issued licenses for marriages since it was a revenue source. You could take the license from one county or city to the next, but not from one state to the next. One of the other problems with licenses back then was where the license was returned. A person could purchase the license in Norfolk County back then and then marry in Portsmouth and return the license to Portsmouth. Norfolk County would then only know that the license had been issued. Portsmouth would only know that the marriage had occurred. Norfolk County records have a number of these on index cards for that time period where they know the license was issued, but it was not returned to the courthouse (or it was lost). In this particular case the marriage "license" in question was actually a marriage return showing that the marriage had occurred. There are far more marriage licenses surviving from this time period than there are marriage returns. Later the license and return were on the same form which eliminated that problem. But not what you are looking for. I recommend either calling the Cemetery (see above) or try emailing the Library, I am not sure if they Have a book on Elmwood, or not but you could try. good luck Kristina _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vanorfol/) _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaprinc2/) _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com) In a message dated 2/17/2010 7:15:43 A.M. I am helping a friend look for a possible ancestral connection, Captain James Forbes Simpson, C.S.A., 15th VA Cavalry/5th VA Cavalry, born abt 1827 (not sure of death date.) He is said to be buried at Elmwood. Would like to get photo and transcription of headstone, if any, and also learn if he is in a family plot or if there are other Simpsons, etc. buried close to him. Is there an online transcription of this cemetery? Also trying to confirm if James is brother to Edmond Simpson. Some of these Simpsons were from Currituck County, NC and also Virginia, possibly Norfolk County. From one census, Edmond was the father of Ezekiel, who was the father of Ora Virginia Simpson. I can't seem to find Captain James Forbes Simpson on a census, although his military unit is shown at Ancestry.com. A family member has a framed photo of James signed by various military officers, but can't narrow down the ancestral connection. If there are other Simpsons buried near James, it might help the search.
