I've "rescued" an old photograph of Johnie M. HERNDON which was taken at the Norfolk Photo Studio in Norfolk, Virginia. The photograph is dated 1905 with Johnie likely in his teens or 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has also written "Fort Monroe 41, Co, P.A, VA" on the back of the photograph. Johnie is not in uniform in the photograph, however, this appears to refer to a military company. I am hoping to locate someone from his family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this HERNDON Family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Hi all, I know this list is for Norfolk County however I thought this book may still be relevant I have the Maury High school yearbook for 1939 called the Commodore. I will glad to do free lookups in the seniors class or staff for you please only send first and last names 3 full names. I will not do just surname searches. Also, if anyone is interested in obtaining this yearbook just send me an email to: deliaesther2@verizon.net I will do these lookups through to Friday night to give people in digest mode a chance to send requests too. Thank you. Beth
Thank you Sue for the information. I think it is not my Shirley. I will try the sites you cited. Alan Rossing In a message dated 1/17/2011 3:05:01 P.M. Birth records in Virginia are sealed for 100 years after the event (death and marriage for 50 years). A direct relative is able to request a copy of the certificate with valid ID. See http://www.vdh.state.va.us/vital_records/index.htm Other than that, you'd be looking through a whole year of un-indexed newspapers which may or may not have mentioned the birth. Happy New Year to Everyone! Have any of you seen the show Pawn Stars on the History Channel? It's a show about a Pawning store in Las Vegas. On the show the other day a gentleman brought in a Civil War desk of his Great(?) Grandfather COMPLETE WITH hundreds of documents, including his personal diaries and war correspondence etc. 5 years worth of documents. I was screaming at the TV, no don't sell. If you really want to get rid of it, call a museum! His grandfather ? was a captain? with the Indiana 10th. could you imagine what priceless genealogy or historical information could be in those papers? In the end the guy didn't sell after a guy from the Vegas Museum told him they would be priceless to a museum. Thanks for letting me vent............... Now, After about 6 years of trying to get my computer to talk to rootsweb, (several computers, several browsers and even a rootsweb upgrade), I've given up. You will notice that when you go to the NORFOLK COUNTY PAGE a link to another page for navigation. navigation for the first time is nice and neat and organized. IT looks SO much better..... Also I now have more than 10 years worth of marriage/death notices and other items of interest from the Norfolk Virginian Posted on the site 1867-1876 and growing every day. I am also still compiling Norfolk CITY marriage info. And Guys while I am always happy to help/advise you on your genealogy quests, you have got to be a tad bit more specific when asking for genealogy help or responding to one of my email me for more info. For example the other day, I got an email from a person asking me for info on their grandparents. Just like that. No names, no dates, no county, no state, etc. So when I write back saying I don’t know your grandparents personally and would need more info to go on, 90% of the time people don’t write back. There are times i get an email, you said to write you in regards to john smith. so having no clue, i have to write back with 20 questions. So in order to help solve this problem, i have posted on almost every page the proper way to ask questions/saves everyone time and helps me help u faster. what was said" you said to write you in regards to john smith" what should have been said: on your nyvagenealogy vd1876 I found john smith on March 1, 1876 and would like more info. see now i know it's a virginian obit and the name and the date...... what was said " you said to write you about john and mary smith " or "you said to write you about john and mary smith march 1 1891 now this is a problem either way, because with 1891 i have two states. so what should have been said is on your nyvagenealogy page nymarriagesmar1891 i found john and mary smith for march 1 1891 or on your nyvagenealogy page mva1891 i found john and mary smith for march 1 1891. 90% of the time when i write back asking state or county people never respond back their by losing an opportunity to possibly gain useful information. Thanks for listening, Hope everyone has a happy new year. FOUND IN THE NORFOLK VIRGINIAN AUGUST 24 1875 Some time since we noticed that in laying the water main on HAWK STREET, a number of coffins containing humans bones were unearthed. MR. GEORGE W. BLUFORD, yesterday informed us that between the years 1825-1833, the piece of land where these coffins were found was used as a POTTERS FIELD, and a large number of bodies were interred there. Some years ago, when MR. ARTHUR COOPER WAS STREET INSPECTOR, the street was opened, and under his direction was graded down, the surplus earth being used to fill up the spot where the city hall now stands. at that time a great quantity of bones were dug up and many of them were deposited with the earth when it was moved. MR. BLUFORD also informed us that while the excavation was going on a trunk with a quantity of coin in it was dug up a portion of the contents falling into the possession of MR. COOPER. Hope someone found this interesting. What a wonderful thought. I would love to find the connection to my middle name, Price. My grandmother's name was Viola Price Akers from the Roanoke, Va area. She was born in 1899. She was told as a child that it was an old family name. Her parents died when she was young. So I would invite her parents, Charles Homer Akers and Julia Ann Muncy. Here is information regarding the Norfolk, VA Police Museum. Hope this helps. Oscar Gilbert ************************************* Saturday, 10-30-2010 Police The Norfolk Police Museum The Norfolk Police Department, established in 1797, is one of the oldest in the United States and has enjoyed an illustrious history of service. The Norfolk Police Museum, established in 1919, is the oldest museum in Norfolk. Its purpose is to document and preserve the history of NPD and those who have served the department. The Museum is located at 401 E Freemason St. in the old Freemason Reception Center. On display are extensive exhibits of early photographs, uniforms, badges, patches, firearms, handcuffs and other equipment used by the police department from its inception until now, something for everyone. Also, the Museum maintains a permanent memorial to our fallen officers. Items of interest related to the police department and to individual police officers, present and past, are always welcome additions to the Museum collection. The Norfolk Police Historical Exposition (NPHE) which supports the Museum is a small, non-profit corporation whose sole function is the financial and logistical support of the Museum. All NPHE members are volunteers. A team of professionals, the curator and historian, conduct research for the department and provide overall management of the Museum and its extensive collection. While the Museum is open to the public and visitors are welcome, it also serves the NPD family. The curator and historian, who both donate their time, frequently receive inquiries about former officers. Fortunately, the Museum has an extensive collection including thousands of photographs dating back to the 1880s, as well as documents and artifacts that are associated with individual officers. As a result, an inquiry about someone’s great-grandparent can usually be answered quickly. The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and on Sunday 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm. For information, contact the Museum at 757-441-1526. ---- Trains75buff@aol.com wrote: ============= Hello, I am helping my stepdaughter find her MATTHEWS family.
