While indexing obits and marriages from the Norfolk Virginian, I notice something that really started to bother me, especially after going day by day through 40 years of newspaper, one thing was extremely apparent, while in the beginning I thought it was ok, that the main focus of the paper was the City Of Norfolk and Portsmouth, and with the occasional mention of Norfolk County...... I was accepting at first...... but then as other areas of the regions began to get their own columns Berkley, Brambleton, Elizabeth City, Bertie, even Petersburg and Nansemond/Suffolk developed a daily column,. What was my pet peeve? Princess Anne County was completely ignored, unless their was a trial going on, it never had it's own column in over 40 years of newspaper....... While Virginia Beach received an occasional mention, it never had a column either, then I found this: In the Feb 12 1896 Edition of the Norfolk Virginian under BRAMBLETON it says: This branch office has received a copy of the PRINCESS ANNE CHRONICLE a four page sheet of which Messrs. J.E. WEST and Benjamin Rowson are editors and published at Kempsville Va. It is published every Friday and is a newsy and interesting weekly. So my question is Does anyone know if any copies of the Princess Anne Chronicle still exist? My local Library would LOVE to have copies. He was born on 3 October 1886 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales and immigrated to Portland, Maine on 27th November 1909 via Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada aboard the SS ‘Canada’ that sailed from Liverpool, UK on the 18th November 1909. Walter married Edith Mary Newton on 17th July 1909 in Oldham, Lancashire, UK. In 1910 they were living with Edith’s brother in law Charles Blanchard Cassidy and her sister Jane Anne Cassidy (nee Newton) at 23 Park Street, Portland, ME. In 1917 Walter was employed as a machinist on the Grand Trunk Railway. Walter and Edith had two children during their marriage, Marion Blackmore born 4 July 1911 in Portland, Cumberland County, ME and Harold Leslie Blackmore born 28 .May 1915 also in Portland, ME. Walter avoided the World War 1 Draft due to missing middle finger (didn’t state which hand). Some time between 1911 and the 1920 Census Walter and Edith had divorced as the census for that year shows him living with a new wife – Laura – and living in Tanners Creek, Norfolk, Virginia. In the 1930 Census they are living in Norfolk, Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia. Laura was born circa 1894 somewhere in Canada. They also had an adopted 2 year old son Walter born in Virginia. Walter Snr was employed as a labourer in a Norfolk steel plant. What is confusing is that a ship’s manifest indicates that on 19th November 1920 Edith Blackmore is shown as still being married and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada aboard the SS ‘Canada’ from Liverpool, UK and the reason for travelling was to join her husband Walter in Portland. She later married George E. Pearson on 12th May 1923 in Portland, ME. What I am trying to establish is when Walter and Edith were divorced – although in all probability this occurred in Maine and not Virginia – and the maiden name of Walter’s second wife Laura and also when she died. Walter Blackmore did not marry his second wife in Norfolk County (I have abstracted records). You can contact the Library of Virginia and see if they can help you with a death certificate. The death certificate should have his wife's maiden name although many just had the married name. They might also be able to answer questions about where divorce records in VA might be located. The Library of Virginia web site is http://www.lva.virginia.gov/ Vital Records web site for VA is http://www.vdh.state.va.us/vital_records/ Sharon Gable -----Original Message----- From: vanorfol-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vanorfol-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of davidblackmore3@blueyonder.co.uk Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 8:37 AM To: VANORFOL@rootsweb.com Subject: [VANORFOL] Walter BLACKMORE, Norfolk City, Virginia Hi, I am trying to trace more information on my 2nd cousin Walter Blackmore who died in December 1975 in Norfolk, Virginia and is buried in I29387 Section G, Block 15, Lot 10, Row 0, Space SW 0, Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby Street, Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A . Kristina - The "Berea Church Cemetery" which you are referring to is no where close to Dozier Corner and in truth is not the "Berea Church Cemetery" although "Tombstone Inscriptions of Norfolk County" lists it as such. That cemetery is privately owned by the Hall family and is listed in the tax records as a tax exempt piece of property for the Hall family which is why you see so many Hall related people...>Dozier, Hall, Curling, etc. The following email is from Dr. Angus McDonald, Pastor, Great Bridge Evangelical Free Church (formerly Berea...and other names). "Let me say first that Berea Church goes back all the way to 1859 at least. It is my understanding that Berea DID have a cemetery and it was behind our current church (on Mt. Pleasant). Incidentally, the stone that is in our furnace room has the name Mary A. Wiley. As I recall she passed in 1929 (?!) The stone has a clear indication of an abrupt hit by what I assume was a metal object. Currently, I am considering asking our leadership to look into geological sensing devices that can determine if a grave exists. If you take a moment out and look at mapquest or google earth, you can see that, behind the sanctuary, there is no home and there appears to be a white object out there. One wonders. " This man was looking for Wileys as they had a stone from her grave in the furnace room of the church. His email address two years ago was amcdonald17@verizon.net as he maintains the cemetery on Mt. Pleasant Road would be properly be called the Berea Church Cemetery (now Great Bridge Evangelical Free Church) Peggy - You need to narrow your search to determine where the graves could be - or better yet, could have been. When you look at Doziers Corner on a current map (i.e. mapquest) you are looking at an area near the intersection of I-64 and I-464. When Kristina told you of other Doziers and mentioned the Berea and Chesapeake Memorial Cemetery she's talking about Great Bridge ---- two totally different places. The Berea cemetery behind the church which I mentioned above is on Mount Pleasant --- all these areas are miles apart. Three things to keep in mind .....just because you find a Dozier Corner doesn't mean it was "the" Dozier corner which your ancestors would have known. Second, just because a grave was there 2 years, or 10 years ago doesn't mean it's there now...Chesapeake is building up too fast and graves are moved or destroyed or "lost" every day with houses and roads. Third and most important - a cemetery name is an "agreed to" name or a commonly used name especially when you are talking about a family cemetery. The Langley Family Cemetery is a good example. It was in Norfolk County and contained the remains of Langleys from the 1700 and 1800s. The land was sold to the Buntings in 1879 and was considered the Bunting cemetery when the city bought the land in 1906. Today the site is Forest Lawn Cemetery. If you searched a current map for the Langley family you wouldn't find their cemetery. My suggestion would be to contact the Library of Virginia and have them look up the death certificate of Lloyd Doxey and see where he is buried and who buried him. They should also have one for the 1924 death - the others are too early. Once you get the cemetery or funeral home you might be able to locate the cemetery....but be aware a lot of the old death certificates just say homestead or family farm which means you need to track deeds to find where they owned land. I checked out the link for the Berea Christian Church Cemetery but I don't see any DOXEY names listed. When I went to Findagrave, it shows a cemetery by this same name in Wyeth County VA but no Doxey names listed there. The Doxey family lived in Portsmouth but may have also had a farm at Doziers Corner. Maybe it is/was just a family burying ground on/near the farm property, as opposed to a public cemetery. My guess is that the farm is no longer there. When I type in 'Doziers/or Dozier's Corner' in Mapquest, etc. all I see is the arrow pointing to a grassy strip in the median, between what appears to be two major roads which are crossing Campostella Road. Some of the headstones that were photographed: Lloyd Doxey (1883-1947), Josephine Saunders (Doxey) wife of William Doxey (Josephine died 1906), William Doxey son of J.B. Doxey (d.1924), and also buried there are other Doxey family members including James Burton Doxey (1828-1905). I'm just not sure where to search for more info. on locating this cemetery or its name. Peggy, It seems to me like Berea is the old church that was on Mt. Pleasant Rd. in Chesapeake. If it is the one I am thinking about, those graves were moved to Chesapeake Memorial Gardens on Cedar Rd. I did not find the Doxey's you are asking about on Findagrave but if you call the keeper of those records, the funeral home beside the cemetery, maybe they can help you. Walter and Edith were divorced – although in all probability this occurred in Maine and not Virginia ( you might want to write to the court house for this) and the maiden name of Walter’s second wife Laura ( where were they married?) and also when she died. is she buried with him? you might want to call the cemetery, and death records are kept in richmond www.vitalrec.com/va.html Any information relating to Walter Snr, Laura and Walter Jnr. will be much appreciated. Marion later married Richard Albert Moody on 24th December 1939 in Portland, ME and Harold married Lucy Belle Oulton 10 June 1939 also in Portland, ME. Any information relating to Walter Snr, Laura and Walter Jnr. will be much appreciated. Hello, I am researching the Doxey family who lived in Portsmouth (Norfolk County) and also had a farm in Doziers Corner (Great Bridge), Chesapeake VA. Several members of this Doxey family are buried in "the cemetery at Doziers Corner" from about the turn of the century to the mid-1940s or so. A family researcher sent me several photos of the various Doxey graves there. What I am trying to learn is the name of the cemetery. When I look on a map, there is a large cemetery....Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, I think, but one researcher said he thought that that is an African-American cemetery? That cemetery is on Campostella Road and a search shows that the vicinity of Doziers Corner is in that same area. Apparently, there was a "caretaker" who showed the family member where the graves were so she could take photos, but that was years ago. I have searched on Find-A-Grave and cannot find a cemetery listed for Doziers/Dozier's Corner. I have also searched for these Doxeys on the Roosevelt cemetery on Find-A-Grave but can't find them there, either. I would like to create pages for some of these Doxeys on Find-A-Grave, but I can't do that until I have a cemetery name! A search for Doziers/Dozier's Corner turns up very little on the internet, other than to show that it is a vicinity name. Any suggestions? Peggy Dyas
