    3. Having finished the typing indexes for 1880's & 1890's last week, after the major set back of my usb drive eating my marriage book (thank god for the intelligence to have a back up copy- that only need 5 years retyped) and wanting to take a break and work on my own family, (before conquering the newspapers and having to retype the earlier indexes) its occurred to me how valuable genealogy wise, my norfolk virginian and and at a later date the public ledger newspaper indexes are going to be. While I am the first one to tell you that sometimes newspapers are going to be priceless, in giving you that little extra piece of info, that solves the mysteries. trying to find that piece of gold can be extremely fustrating and time consuming. and possibly costly. trying to find if there was a newspaper during that time period in their city/town etc. then trying to find the names of the paper, see where it's avail and how much a look up will cost. or if it's avail online and if you don't know the date, or have to search a large period of time, it could take you a life time. and search engines, i'm telling you are NOT that helpful.... or that accurate............ LOL..... well in a month or two or three depending on my speed.... 1865-1890 index for the norfolk virginian should be ready to go and i'm almost finished with 1890's so maybe by the fall the whole thing 1865+1898 will be ready for publishing along with the marriage books. now remember these indexes (2) one for obits and one for marriages (2) is going to be mostly local & paid. aka if the king of england died, it's not in my index, if the president died it's not in my index.......... kristina

    1. Re: [VANORFOL] Higgins - Norfolk, Virginia > Around 1805 to 1860
    2. Sharon Gable
    3. Tom - I think Higgins stayed in Norfolk and didn't venture out to the country even witness a will :-) I checked all the Norfolk county wills to see if he was mentioned or served as a witness and there were no Higgins at all, so your answer might exist on the Norfolk city board instead of the Norfolk County board. I did find his marriage in the Norfolk City abstracts to the dau of Jeremiah Andrews in 1806 and his son's marriage later ....all in the city. I found where Eugene witnessed the will of Samuel McCurdy which was confusing. Seems it was proved twice (all in Norfolk city). The first time the abstract said there were no witnesses to the will (written 30 Sep 1803) but Eugene Higgins made oath as to the will in court 28 May 1804. Then the next entry states that it was proved in 1806 and Eugene was a witness to the 1803 will - so you'd have to check the original to know for sure (if you are interested in placing him in Norfolk (Boro) in 1803). I also found a Samuel Higgins who witnessed the will of Michael Mann on 3 Sep 1804 which might be of interest. Norfolk was incorporated as a town in 1736 and a city in 1845, but appears to have had its own Hustings Court much earlier as court records start in 1760s with wills starting in Corporation Court in 1784.
