Hello All, I have added to my web site a map showing Virginia in 1676. We all know that our ancestors went to South Mills or Elizabeth City (or even just to the Line House) to get married if they wanted to marry without parents permission before they were 21. Some even went after they were 21 to get married since a marriage had the reputation of occurring faster in NC than in Virginia (I know I did :-)). I just wanted to let the list know that the Family Research Society of Northeastern NC is offering a new book entitled..Camden County North Carolina (extant) Marriage Returns 1848 - 1919 including Cohabitation records for $30 plus 6.5% tax if you live in NC and $2.50 if you want it shipped. The book is found on their web site www.rootswe.com/~ncfrsnnc under latest news. The book contains 3840 marriages and cohabitation records (from 1866) and quite a few are Norfolk County names or "sound like" Norfolk County names. While Norfolk County licenses asked where the parties were from, NC ones asked "of" which could be where you were born or where you are living or anything in between. I did find some pure Norfolk County ones like Slaughter Sikes marrying Margaret Curling in 1855. This book does NOT contain all the marriages..only the ones they have at the courthouse in Camden. They have a scattering of the returns from the Bond period and "most" of the ones from the license/return period (1868 forward). I have already found at least one missing since it developed legs between the time it occurred and was recorded in the register in 1875 and today - I took the info for the book from the actual returns, not the register for the 1868-1919 ones. I will of course do look-ups if you think your ancestor took the canal boat to South Mills as many did..email me and I'll look it up. The book is sorted by groom and indexed by bride and both sets of parents, but parents weren't required on the license in NC until 1873. I am hoping this will clear up any confusion as to what i was talking about in my previous emails. i was only trying to offer a "free lookup" for those of you who live out of state or who are unable to access a library. the library catalgue is accessible online and u do not need a virginia beach library card to access it. you would need one if you lived here to actually take out a book, but you do not need a library card to access catalgue as i have made this offer in the past and tons of people have had no problems accessing the sites.
