The third Volume of the Norfolk County VA Marriage Licenses is now available at the Family Research Society of Northeastern NC (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncfrsnnc/ ). The book covers 1850 - 1899 and is for non-white marriages. It has 5735 marriage license/returns as well as 59 "index cards" where the actual license has been lost. Races include African-American, Indian and "mixed blood" or "mixed blood of Indian descent" to use the terminology of that day. The book, like the 2 previous volumes, is sorted by groom with the brides and both sets of parents being indexed. The society sells the books for $50 plus shipping (and tax if delivered to NC address) or you can purchase the book from one of the authors (Sharon Gable or Tim Bonney). The society accepts Purchase Orders from libraries. I will do look-ups in this book if desired. Just email me at home or at frsnnc2@hotmail.com Kristina - please add this book to the ones I have on your look-up page. Thanks Sharon Gable Sharon Gable CG CG and Certified Genealogist are Service Marks of the Board for Certification of Genealogists used under license after periodic evaluations by the Board.
I have some good news and some bad news .... GOOD NEWS My website has been re-designed. This resulted in a new link so you may need to change to the new bookmark. Visiting the Past http://home.earthlink.net/~rjfamily/data/past/ BAD NEWS Several of my genealogy software packages are upgrading at the same time. Until I can get a handle on all the re-installs and resulting new perks, a smaller database will be incorporated into the website. The links for Families of North Carolina, Families of Virginia and Families of Scotland are no longer active. Wishing you the very best for 2008. Rae Jean in Tennessee

The Oden yDNA Project is almost two years old. There are seven members, two of who descend from Solomon Oden of Williamson County, Tennessee and five who are believed to descend from Thomas Oden of Charles County, Maryland. Family Tree DNA, where the project testing is done, have make available six gift certificates for the holiday season, four for yDNA testing and two for mtDNA testing. For yDNA testing, you MUST be a male, directly descended in the male line from the earliest know ancestor with your surname. If your line of descent has been interrupted by an adoption, or a female ancestor the your yDNA will not match your earliest know ancestor For mtDNA test, both men and women can find information on their ancestors. mtDNA passes from a mother to all of her children, both sons and daughters, however, only the daughters pass it on to their children, it dead ends in the sons. Whether the person tested is male or female, they will find out about the genetic history of their maternal ancestors. The Oden yDNA Project has a specific need for men with the Oden surname whose Oden ancestors originate in Charles County, and Frederick County, Maryland and in Beaufort County, North Carolina. In Charles County, we are looking for descendants of Francis Oden, who died there in 1726. Francis had five sons, Francis, Pembroke, David, Lewis and Thomas. Francis Oden the younger died in 1772, leaving sons Jonathan, Elias, Vincent and Michael, David Oden lived in Frederick County. We believe there are still Oden descendants living in the county. One descendant of this Oden family was Thomas Oden who lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky and Warren County, Missouri. We believe there are still Oden descendants in both counties. In the case of Beaufort County, North Carolina, we are looking for descendant of Richard Odeon / Oden. Richard acquired land in Beaufort County, beginning in 1700. He died there in 1708, naming sons William, Richard, John, Atta and Charles. William Oden was given land in Virginia, believd to be Lower Norfolk County. The Oden yDNA Project is particularly interested in having one or more men from they two families join the project. The project is open to all men with the ODEN surname. The gift certificates will be awarded on a first come first serve basis. William T. Coles Marleen Van Horne Oden yDNA Project Managers

In 1906, Esther A. Russell died in Norfolk VA. Her pallbearers as listed in the Ledger Dispatch were: Captain Phillips; W.E. Taylor; J. Dozier, F. Crelenda and S. Mathews. Can anyone please supply the given name of any of these people and tell me something about them so I can figure out why they were honored to serve as Esther's pall bearers? Thanks so very much. Clare

Hi, I am looking for death information on the following individuals: Rosanina (Hunter) PERRY: She was born abt 1850 in Timmonsville, Darlington Co, South Carolina, and she died AFT. 1920 in Norfolk, VA. She married Henry PERRY on abt. 1866, and had the following children: Amanda (1867), Mary (1870), Lourena (1877), Beula (1879), Alma (1884), Lawrence (1885), and John (1894). Henry PERRY: He was born abt 1845 in Timmonsville, Darlington Co, South Carolina, and he died abt 1914 in Norfolk, VA. He married Rosanina Hunter on abt. 1866, and had the following children: Amanda (1867), Mary (1870), Lourena (1877), Beula (1879), Alma (1884), Lawrence (1885), and John (1894). Thanks for any help you can give me. Anna Adams
I don't have any "I can solve this in 5 clues" type answers, but I can suggest some other possibilities..... - The land belonged to someone else and he paid the taxes on it - The land was left to him in a will (that didn't survive or hasn't been abstracted) from a friend or relative - He married again (to another Elizabeth) and therefore inherited land - all marriage records didn't survive - He bought land and the land grant didn't survive or the deed didn't survive ---remember that filing a deed was not a requirement back then! Some deeds weren't filed for 50-60 years or longer and some were never filed. - his sister or daughter married land, died childless and he inherited the land from the intestate female and her late husband....there were some odd inheritance sequences during that time period which you'd need to research in Hennings - and the easiest...he inherited from his father/step-father or older childless brother. There are a number of deed books which aren't deed books as we think of them now-a-days. It could be your deed is in found in "Lower Norfolk County Records 1637-1646", or "Will and Deed book B 1646-1651" or even in Princess Anne County records depending on where the land was located. All deeds have not been indexed! And all indexes aren't 100% correct. How else could someone have read O'dean, O'deyn or whatever back then? You might be interested to know that Deed book B is the earliest I've seen indexed (starts in 1646). I would have thought they started with Deed Book A, but I haven't seen one. I don't think there'll be a simple answer. Your suggestion that he may have married a woman with land in her own right is a possibility, but remote, I think. In that, he married Elizabeth Vestes in London in April of 1644 and at that time, they were both described as living in Lymehouse, London. Although he apparently owned land in Lower Norfolk, it appears he made his home in Lymehouse, Poplar and Ratcliffe, areas of London, east of the Tower. I found birth records for six of seven of his know children. Does this information in any way change where I should look for land records?
