Hi; First, I would like to welcome any of the new members to our mailing group.... Although I am the county co-ordinator for Norfolk County, I am not familiar with the area and am not researching anyone from this county. So what I do is purely as volunteer work and to help other genealogists... I set up the mailing list to enable some of you hopefully to find each other, and communicate on your lines. Normally you won't even 'see' me much, as I don't have a lot of family information to contribute. But I am behind the scenes here and if anyone has any problems with the mailing list or the website for Norfolk Co, then email me privately and I will be glad to help. The mailing list is to post family information and queries. There is also places on the website to do that.... If you are having problems, then email me, don't post that to the list here, as eveything goes into the Rootsweb archives and people, even later on can find these messages, and contact you... But, I guess I should explain the way this works... :) If you sign up for the Norfolk Mailing List from the website, the info on the website is what I have written and tried to explain to people who wish to join us. Although I am considered the manager of this list, I do not provide the machinery or program or anything that makes it run. When you guys did sign up, whether via the Norfolk Co page or other method, you should have received a welcome message from Rootsweb with instructions on how to post, unsubscribe, etc. This welcome message is sent automatically from Rootsweb... Rootsweb probably handles thousands of messages per day, and so has a lot of their machinery, whatever on automatic... It's the only way they could possibly provide this service for us... If anyone gets double email, or anything like that, then contact me and let me know exactly what the problem is so I will know how to help you,,, writing complaints to this mailing list is a bit redundant, as this is all automated, except for me that is... :) Gracie
As I have just sent a note to you I sent it, so I thought to D Digest and when it was processed to send it went to L- list. What am I doing wrong??? pftaylor@compuserve.com
Why does this mailing list have to include extraneous information when it was already given when I subscribed? To repeat and repeat seems unnecessary to me but then, you all know. Perhaps it is the mailing list to which I subscribed? Also, I really want to document queries but there seems to be no place to do so. Should I be on the -L- list? Pftaylor pftaylor@compuserve.com

I thought I would forward this message as it is of great interest: Paul Murauskas murauskas@midsouth.net ======================================================= I found another great site for looking at maps for different cities. This site even has a zoom feature that lets you zoom in on the image and actually see street names. The legend lists names, companies, etc.. The 1756 Philadelphia map even has houses with the names of the occupant (head of household or who the home belongs to). These maps are incredible! I also downloaded the viewer so that I can zoom in off the web but you can still look at the images without getting the viewer.. you just can't zoom in unless you're on this site: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/citymapgeogindex1.html There were more than a dozen Philadelphia maps from different years .. 1700's to 1908. The map for Uniontown (Fayette county) was also a great map and was of interest because my father was born there in 1906. Check this site out to see what the layout of the land was when our ancestors lived there. Thanks to the MANY people on this list who answered my query on the what and where of Brambleton. The consensus was that it is a neighborhood in the city of Norfolk. Joan

I am searching for information on a William R. Tolleth. Mr. Tolleth was employed by John B. Niven a charter accountant of Edinburg, Scotland 1882-1889 in Norfolk. He was secretary-treasurer of Duke and Smith and was later the treasurer of Jamestown Exposition Company. After that he was in public accounting practice on his own account. Mr. Tolleth was last recorded as a member of the Virginia Society of CPA's in 1956-57 in Portsmouth, VA. Any suggestions as to obtaining more information about him or his family would be greatly appreciated. I have no date of death and very little information about him Thank you, Cathy Fanning Stoppel
I am trying to find out more about the MASSINGHAM family members who emigrated to the USA from England (probably from the county of Norfolk in England). The earliest US entries I have found are in Virginia. I found references to the marriage bonds of James Massingham to Julia Shipwash in Norfolk County, Virginia, dated 18 December 1804, and to the marriage bond of James Massingham to Fanny Doudge, also in Norfolk County, Virginia, dated 17 March 1819. I do not know if these two James were the same person. Sarah Massingham and James Mills also made a marriage bond in Norfolk County, Virginia, on 16 January 1822. Given the rarity of the Massingham surname, it is reasonable to believe Sarah was related to James Massingham, but I have no proof of this. I would therefore be very grateful for any information on the MASSINGHAM (sometimes spelled MESSINGHAM) surname in the state of Virginia at any time, but especially around the beginning of the 19th century in Norfolk County. I am especially interested in any evidence of where they migrated from, and any descendants of James and Sarah Massingham. Hi Folks, Just yesterday discovered the following that was in the papers of the late Jean Durrett whom was the historian for Robertson County Tennessee. Thomas Taylor is my 5th great grandfather. I descend from his daughter Frances "Fanny" that married John Cone. Being that I just discovered who her father was I have not got much to nothing on him. Would love to hear from cousins out yonder that descend from Thomas Taylor or perhaps even one of his siblings. Thanks, Jeffery Hancock County, Georgia Abstracts of Deed - Deed Book F p.156 27 Dec 1802 John Cone and Fanny his wife, of Greene county do constitute our trusty friend Reverend Jesse Lee of Petersburg, Virginia our true and lawful attorney to sell one half acre of land in the Town of Norfolk and state aforesaid which was given Fanny and Judah Taylor by their father Thomas Taylor sometime before his death reference being made to deed from John Ramsey and Mary his wife to Thomas Taylor in the year of our Lord 1767. Hi All, My apologies for leaving out Mrs. Hanbury's address for ordering the two books available for sale! (Many of these > families migrated back and forth across the VA-NC border.) It is $30 plus > $2.50 postage and handling. On the available books from the Norfolk Co Historical Society, someone queried if you had to pay the tax if you are out of state. I confirmed with the city employee at the library who handles the orders that they pay the state tax on every book sold and don't have a provision for exclusion on out of state orders. Sorry--just think of it as a contribution to your ancestors! Dee

Hi, Atlantic City is now the neighborhood of Ghent...if you call or write to Elmwood cemetery..or Forrest Lawn cemetery in Norfolk, VA..they should be able to check out their listings for your man. If you don't know when the marriage took place..then just go back a few years from the birth of their first child..5 or 10 years at the most..then when you call the cemeteries..go forward from a guessed marriage date..to a guessed death date..and ask them to check their records for his burial within a time span of years. They are very nice people who work at Elmwood and Forrest Lawn..they really are kind. hope this helps, Susan in VA..ps My ancestor lived in Atlantic City too..and he was married to my great granny in Mathews county, VA...wonder if we are related? =) Plus the Kirn Memorial Library in Norfolk has very old city directories..they have my great grand dad living there for many years..when they drop off the city directory..it's for one of two reasons..they moved or died. It's a good way to track a possible death date. >Subject: [VANORFOL-L] Ewell surname >Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII >Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit > >I am trying to locate information on a Jesse Ewell who married a Mary >Boggs in >the Norfolk county area.
