    3. Stephe--Not your fault. If this branch were normal people the marriage record you found would have helped clear things up. It didn't. I rest my case. --------- With reference to the land records in Dixon: They're very hard to interpret. The problem is John (1799)'s first son (maybe; apparently he might be wife Chloe's son from a conjectural prior marriage) signed himself James M. Van Arnam. Unfortunately that's the way John's considerably younger brother, James Madison VA, signed himself, too, and there are indications he was probably the "James M. Van Arnams" in at least some of these Dixon area land deals. (James Madison and youngest of the brothers, Damen, seem to have come at least occasionally to the Marengo area around 1844. I haven't found anything to indicate either ever "lived" in Dixon. They moved to Walnut in Bureau County in 1849 when the last of the Illinois Bounty Lands opened for settlement and lived about 1/4 mile from each other there until Damen disappeared on a land-buying trip into Dakota Territory about 1870. From family memory, Damen was what you call "a wheeler dealer".) Linda--With reference to Daniel Mason, as I recall, he was another early Dixon settler a year or so before John Van Arnam. I think they were partners in a grist mill for a while until John decamped Dixon around 1844. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen Wood" <stephe.w300@gmail.com> To: <vannorman@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 10, 2010 8:49 PM Subject: Re: [VANNORMAN] Double Van Arnam (etc.) family connection > Boy, did I open a can of worms on this one!!!! > > Stephe > > On 11/10/10, Pete Gonigam <gonigam@hotmail.com> wrote: >> It's why I stopped working on this line 10 years ago and why I'm going >> after >> original records now.
