    3. I'd tend to agree with Stephe on playing the odds the individuals named were the couple's offspring. Even so, I have one earlier instance in which a woman gave one of her children to her (far better-off but childless) sister to adopt as her own; the child was known by and used the Van Arnam surname, at least most of the time.
