    1. [VANNORMAN] Family Finder DNA
    2. Leslie Thomas
    3. Family Finder DNA tests don't list exact connections. My Family Tree account is 67031. I had an mtDNA test done first to no avail. Then I decided to try the Family Finder which says it can match you from 1st to 5th cousins. The read-out results are over 2,000 pages long with lots of numbers and letters... next to impossible for me to decipher them. Trouble is that the tests don't tell you HOW you relate to these people and where exactly you match. It does tells you what percentage of DNA you share. So far I only have 2 - 3rd cousins and we can't even figure out where the match is there. There are 12 - 4th cousins and 32 - 5th cousins. If a surname doesn't jump out at you there is a great deal of unanswered questions among all these people. Since my BARKER line is also from the UK via NY I match many other New England families as well. Family Tree DNA leaves it up to you to decide how and where you connect to these supposed matches. If someone hasn't carried their research out to their 64-6th great grandparents completely it could take a while to figure it all out. (I haven't gotten that far myself) Most of these 5th cousin matches haven't gotten beyond their 2nd great grandparents. My haplo group is HV. All that tells me is what nationality I'm not. But its still fun to try and figure it all out. Leslie Barker Thomas On Sep 6, 2010, at 8:50 PM, Susan Claggett wrote: Hi Leslie: I am glad that you were able to have a family DNA test done. My brother's test is 169963 which is the Early NY Ancestry of R1a. We are getting closer IMO to finding our answers. I've been searching in depth using the Google Books site for information on my Isaac VanNorman b. 1794 in PA and died 22 Dec 1878 in MN. I've gone so far as to have the family finder DNA tests done and found dozens of cousins but have no idea how most are related. One recently came about that intrigues me in that this person has the surnames Janzen, Klassen, Loewen and Doerksen in their genealogy. I believe I had seen some of these names on this list indicate that these families married into VN lines. I have yet to find Harriet's, wife of my Isaac, maiden name. I have determined their children (forgive my repeating this information): Charles R. VN 1837-1918 m. Jane (or Nancy Jane) no further info on this couple, anyone have him in their tree? 3. Janzen, Klassen, Loewen and Doerksen could fit with the NYC and Albany Van Arnams. Jansz and Dircksen particularly were surnames some of the children of Jan Dircks and Sara Theunis used before everybody seemed to settle on Van Arnam around 1700. Klassen and Loewen don't sound exactly right but they sound a little like a couple of ancilliary families. Depends on the date. Please feel free to have whoever this is contact me directly. --pete ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leslie Thomas" <aeriehollow@ellijay.com> To: <vannorman@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 06, 2010 6:11 PM Subject: [VANNORMAN] Isaac VanNorman Pennsylvania b. 1794 > Always glad to see the volume of activity on this list. > > I've been searching in depth using the Google Books site for > information on my Isaac VanNorman b. 1794 in PA and died 22 Dec 1878 > in MN. 3. Hi Leslie, I am working on the Samuel Van Norman line - who is mentioned below - actually his father is an Isaac Van Norman also. My Samuel Van Norman was listed in the 1790 Northampton Co., PA census and lived there until he died in 1847. He was born in 1762. He could possibly be your Isaac's father. I have not accounted for all his children as of yet. I had thought that Joseph Van Norman line of Smithfield and my line where connected - but have not made the connection. I was hoping to get pension application papers - their were none. I believe that the Ephraim and Isaac listed are the sons of Joseph that is listed. I also think Samuel and William may be brothers. The Isaac that is listed could also be the father of Samuel and William. Did you say you had someone do the DNA testing for the Vanormans? In addition to what I have listed below I have an index for both, a letter from NYS Library (to Karl VN) saying "Patent for land of Isaac Van Norman delivered to John M. Watson" (I belive that refers to the "assign" listed below. Does anyone know how these things worked? Are there more documents to be found? Arlene Van Norman Reeves 7913- March 14 1893 - a document requesting a survey of 100 acres for Isaac Van Norman "of the late New York line" Then on March 23, 1893 he signed a document to "assign" the land "for the use of the people of the State of New York" 27532 Sept 15, 1848 (the original document that was found) "heirs "are entitled to 160 acres" this document appears to have been filed by the same guy "A. L. Lynde" that applied for Hannah's pension. What I find interesting is Hannah was not listed on this document. Then another document dated Feb 20 1849 "in their favor" naming the land and all the heirs and "subject to sale at Mineral Point" (that's the land office)

    3. Karl Franklin Van Norman born 1886 PA is my Isaac and Cynthia Hatch Van Norman's great grandson. I have found several letters from him on Footnote regarding Isaac VN. Is this the same Karl that the letter from the NYS Library was sent to? -----Original Message----- From: Arlene Reeves [mailto:arkretired@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 3:08 PM To: vannorman rootsweb Subject: [VANNORMAN] Isaac VN land grants I have a number of documents pertaining to Isaac Van Norman (Hannah Brown) land grants. 3. I agree with your assessment, Arlene. This is what I have in my notes: 1850 United States Federal Census This is NOT our Hannah Paige: Name: Hannah Page Age: 80 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1770 Birth Place: New Hampshire Gender: Female Home in 1850(City,County,State): Rochester Ward 9, Monroe, New York Household Members: Name Age Clark D Page 37 NH Chloe Page 37 NY Caroline F Page 12 NY Daniel A Page 10 NY Clark A Page 8 NY John G Page 6 NY Mary J Page 5 NY Olive L Page 3 NY David P Page 11m NY Hannah Page 80 NH The following I think are just boarders at the inn. Edward Wilson 21 Thomas Bell 24 Joseph F Bonesteel 32 Asa Chappell 30 Ellen Obrien 18 Hannah and Chloe both died the following year, 1851, and are buried in Falls Cemetery, Greece, Monroe Co., NY. Clark moved to NJ. Hannah's tombstone reading says she was 84. This could be a misreading for 81y. Records are on Find A Grave, but no pictures. Chloe: Birth: unknown Death: Jul. 13, 1851; Age 38y 8m 8d - wife of C. D. Also buried there are "two infants of C. D. & Chloe." Linda Schwenn
