    3. John I believe you misunderstood. I do believe the other children are all children of our Jan and Sara, just not Dirkje. However the one that lists Sara as Sara Thomas (Marie) makes me wonder a little bit. Sixteen was quite a common age to get married and have children during that time period. It may not solve any problems but it just might get it right. The records are fitting together nicely and our Sara and Jan are fitting right in with the first settlers families. Sara Theunis Interesting theory. Off hand, I can think of a few problems... Since you propose (reading between the lines) that Jan and Sara of the marriage record had no children other than Dirkje, either Jan or Sara died. There should be a widower Jan somewhere (there clearly is no Sara, widow of Jan Dirkszen). Or some of the children (including Jan Janse) could be the "other" Jan and Sara's (which would be back to square one), and would raise the question of why no children of the two pairs of Sara & Jan overlap. Basically, you are creating two new people that need to be accounted for. Where are they? Also, the court case with Jan being accused of stealing boots strongly implies Jan "van Arnhem" is a soldier, creating a link between "Jan van Arnhem" and "Jan the soldier". Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems this theory doesn't actually solve any problems, except the early birth of Dirkje, which really isn't a problem (as Pete pointed out, premature births weren't uncommon, assuming she didn't concieve enroute). In turn, you introduce a number of other problems. Sara's propossed age of 16 at the birth of Magdalena (abt 15y 6m at conception) would itself be a larger problem that Dirkje's birth date. It's certainly is worthwhile research - even if incorrect, you may unearth a link between Jan T. and Sara. I look forward to hearing more about the theory. 3. I am working on proven that now John but it is going to take some time to sort it all out. I went out and collected a lot of information and I am adding it to my tree now. We know that we have been dealing with more than one Jan Dircksen and Sara Theunis. I think our Sara Theunis and Jan Dirckzen were born in New Amsterdam. I think Sara's birth record is below with her either being born or baptized as an older child in 1653. I also believe it is likely that our Jan Dirckszen was born in New Amsterdam as well. 1653 20 Apr; Theunis Janszen; Sara; David de Potter and his wife I think Dirckje may belong to another Jan Dirckszen and Sara Theunis/Thomas. 1664 Dec 31; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Dirckje; Tryntie Grevenraedt I also think our Sara Theunis my have been from a Catholic family in The Netherlands like Pete had mentioned and that they had some French ancestry. It may not have been our Sara Theunis on the De Trowe in 1664 which would solve the early baby dilemma. Magdelena should be the first born/named female and the sponsors fit perfectly. Below are the Baptismal records for the children that we have believed are of our Jan Dirckszen Van Aernhem and Sara Theunis. Susan 1664 Dec 31; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Dirckje; Tryntie Grevenraedt 1669 Aug 18; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Magdalena; Jilles Joosten, Maria Wouters 1671 Jun 04; Jan Dircxzen Van Aernhem, Sara Theunis; Jan; Jan Laurenszen Duyts, Mayken Laurens 1673 Apr 09; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Abraham; Jean le Maistre, Susanna Le Maistre 1675 Jul 14; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Thomas; Marie; Willem Van Leyden 1677 Sep 26; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Catharina; David Hendrickszen, Tryntie Hercks 1680 Apr 03; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Isaac (twin); Daniel Terneur, Hester de La Maistre, Marritie Pieters 1680 Apr 03; Jan Dirckszen, Sara Theunis; Jacob (twin); Daniel Terneur, Hester de La Maistre, Marritie Pieters I am having trouble getting this message thru to Rootsweb. 1. [VANNORMAN] Lucas Dircksen, from Berg, Germany
    2. Susan Claggett
    3. Lucas Dircksen, from Berg, Germany, was one of the signers of the Lutheran petition in October, 1657, in New Amsterdam. His wife was Annetje Cornelis. They had several children. Dircksen came to New Netherland in 1652 or before. In 1654 he was given a license to retail beer and wine. Up to that time he seems to have been employed as a soldier. His business brought him a number of times into court, - to collect an account or to be fined for tapping after the hours of closing. He seems to have resided for some time at South River, where he possessed a house.

    1. [VANNORMAN] Notes for Ragel (Racheal) Jans whose parents are Jan Theunissen and Maritje Jans
    2. Susan Claggett
    3. Notes for RAGEL JANS: 1661, May 9 -- "... Again we have a Dutch patronymic, Maritje, daughter of Jan. [Rachel] was one of two daughters, age 1 1/2 and 4, who appear unnamed with their parents, Jan Theunissen and Maritje Jans, on the May 9, 1661 passenger list of the ship 'De St. Jan Baptist' ... The record of her second marriage shows that Maritje was born Amsterdam. The father was very likely the Jan Teunisze who was born at Amsterdam 10-19-1631, son of Teunis Jans from Deventer, Ourjas, Netherlands and his wife Jannetje Arents which couple had married (Amsterdam?) September 14, 1624. [The Lost Palatine 16:10]. " [John D. Baldwin research, B4, B19) "The two 'sons of Teunis,' Jan and Arent, adopted the surname of Pier, also found as Pyer. Jan's daughter Rachel, the wife of Arie Fransen is found as Rachel Jansen Pyer, Rachel Janse Pier, Rachel Rachel Jansen Pier, Rachel Pier, also simply by the patronymic Rachel Jans and Ragel (Dutch for Rachel) Jans." [Baldwin, B19] 1703, 1707, 1711 -- "Likely she used her married surname as the Maritje Ploeg, sponsor at baptisms of four of her DeLong grandchildren." [Baldwin, B20] 1712 -- "A witness to baptism of child in Kingston." [Baldwin, B20] 1716 -- "Sponsor at birth of Neeltje, daughter of probable daughter Willemtje." [Baldwin, B20] 1720/1721 -- "Rachel and Hendrick Ploeg on Kingston tax list, perhaps the mother and son." [Baldwin, B20] 1723 -- "Sponsor in Kingston" [Baldwin, B20] Children of ARIE FRANSEN and RAGEL JANS are: 2. <http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/e/t/Donald-P-Petro/GENE5-0002. html#CHILD2> i. 1. [VANNORMAN] Jan Dircksen from Amsterdam, , master carpenter, who sailed in the company's service in the ship Swol, lying sick a bed at the house of George Rapalje

    3. http://www.stipak.com/hoagland/maria/bios/5.HTM Page 30]: "Samuel Rapalye," in 1703; "Jeronimus Rapalje," "Yan Rapalje," "Daniel Rapalje," and "Joris Rappalyee," all in 1723; and "Derrick Rappaljee," in 1739. In consequence of this prefix not having been used by Joris Jansen Rapalie and his immediate descendants, although in some instances used by contemporary clergymen and writers, the propriety of its being used by them in any case is very questionable. If he had been of noble birth, or of a station above the ordinary settlers, his contemporaries would, in the public records, have prefixed to his name the appellation of "Heer," (Mister), as was done in the case of Van Rensellaer, De Sille, De Bruynne, Poulus Van der Bek, and others. Joris Jansen Rapalie was probably a sailor, for on the colonial records of June 12th, 1647, in the office of the secretary of state at Albany, it is set forth, that "Jan Dircksen from Amsterdam, master carpenter, who sailed in the company's service in the ship Swol, lying sick a bed at the house of George Rapalje, chief boatswain ('hooch bootsman'), in New Amsterdam, makes his will."1 <http://www.stipak.com/hoagland/maria/bios/5.HTM#PC1D> Rapalie made the following mark for his signature to documents: [Sorry, image not available at this time--Webmaster] ________________ [Footnotes on Page 30]: 1See vol. 11, p. 349, O'Callaghan's translation Dutch Records.

    3. I really don't know how to begin because I don't have it all formulated yet and I want to say that my working theory is prone to several errors and will need changes as we find documents and discuss. But I do believe the puzzle is framed and we need to fill the pieces. Our Van(N)Orman / Van Arnhem family arrived in New Amsterdam in the late 1630's and early 40's. The big clue for me was when I read James Rikers comment about Jan Teunissen and Jan Dirckszen being brother in laws which I believe turns out to be correct but we still need to prove it. After tracing Jan Teunissen's parents (married 14 Sep 1624) to Teunis Janszen (Pier, Peer, Speir) born abt 1603 (son of Jan Teunissen Pier abt 1584 and Aeltjen Willems Van Essen 1583) and Jannetje (Jannettie) Arentsdr Joosten abt 1602 Toene (daughter of Aert Joosten abt 1575 and Mary Willems abt 1573) I was able to make many family connections both in New Amsterdam and in The Netherlands. The families are primarily from the Breda, Willemstad, Heusden and the Tilburg area in the early 1600's. The primary families are Teunissen(Theunis/Theuniszen/Thonissen), Janszen/Janse,Willemszen,Joosten,Dirckszen,(Dirix/Dirxssen/Dircken/Dirkse), Corneliszen, Jacobszen, Peers, Brouwer, Pieterszen, Elbertszen, Hendrickszen, Gerritszen, Andriszen, Arentszen, Abrahamszen, Laurenszen, Fredrickszen, Van der Beeck (Van Der Burchgraeff/Beckers/Verbroeck/Baeck), Verdon, Van Essen, Roelofse, Bremer, Philips. I will be sending several emails where I have copied documents as I found them that looked interesting to me from various websites. Let me know if you see the patterns I have found. Below is a history of the Rensselaerwyck Voyage to refresh your memory. More soon... Susan Van Orman Claggett Rensselaerswyck 1636-1637 Voyage Thanks goes to Ruth Piwonka for transcribing this list for the Olive Tree Genealogy Source Notes: A J F Van Laer compiled a list of Settlers of Rensselaerswyck 1630-1658 as an appendix to his translation of The Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts (published Albany: State University of New York, 1908). This appendix has been reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1965 under the title Settlers of Rensslaerwyck. Most of the settlers who came to Rensselaerswyck in 1637 came on the vessel of the same name. Additionally a handful of settlers who first appeared in accounts of the colony are described as probably passengers on the vessel. The log of the voyage of the Rensselaerswyck was translated by Van Laer and included in The Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts. The journey was an unusually long one, beginning at Amsterdam September 25, 1636 and returning there November 7, 1737. It sailed from Texel on October 8, 1637. Difficult weather was invariably the culprit. When not beset by severe storms, still, calm, windless days made the ship drift for days at a time. For 17 days the ship was off course and near the coast of Spain when the captain at last decided they must head back because of limited supplies of food and because more and more people were growing ill daily. His goal was the south coast of England. There, at Ilfracombe, on December 8, Cornelis Thomasz was stabbed by his helper, Hans van Sevenhuysen. Sevenhuysen died the following day - a Tuesday - and the captain noted in his log how all the people in this neighborhood went to pray on account of the severe sickness which God is sending them. The Rensselaerswyck at last arrived at Manhattan on Wednesday, March 4, but could not travel to Fort Orange because the Hudson River was still closed by ice. On Sunday, the 8th, two children born on board the vessel were baptised at the Manhattan church. On Sunday, the 22nd, the widow of the murdered Cornelis Thomasz, a smith, married Arent Steffeniers. Finally on March 26th, the vessel left for Fort Orange and arrived there Tuesday, April 7th. Since some of the passengers are first listed in accounts of April 3rd, these men evidently traveled to Fort Orange via yacht. The Rensselaerswyck left Fort Orange on 29 May. This is not a proper passenger list -- but suffices nicely. Van Laer also gives some additional 'biographical' data from the Van Rensselaer records that are not included here. Interested researchers will have to consult the original sources for these details By the Rensselaerswyck. Sailed form the Texel, October 8, 1636; arrived New Amsterdam, March 4, 1637. . He was a boy in 1637 . Symon Walichsz (Walichs, Walichsen, Walinschsz, Walings, Walingen, . Waelingen) from Wijngaerden, district of Bildt, Friesland. Lorine's Note re Albert Andriessen de Noorman [Bradt]: His son Storm was born during this voyage, as per the ships' log. Storm became Storm Vanderzee (Storm from the sea) Lorine's Additional Research Note: We also find, in NNC:4:3.66, an Amsterdam notarial document dated 26 Aug. 1636 stating that Dirk Corssen Stam will be aboard the Rensselaerswijk as merchant. 2. Susan, Your husband might be right about you being crazy? Probably most genealogist spouses would agree their spouse is a little loony. My wife certainly doesn't understand my sheer delight when I find information on an ancestor who had been dead for centuries. My wife has suggested a 12 step program as a cure and I'm fighting her all the way - I don't want to be cured!
