I am a Vance by birth and have researched a lot of Vances. However, I do not believe we are in the same line, I would suggest that you check the Vances of Hatfield and McCoy fued fame. Some of them were possibly from Russell. I really tried to make myself connected to that John Vance because it sounded like what I would expect some of my ancestors to be, but it didn't work out that way. Also check Logan County, Wv.
