>Just reading today of the death of Mrs. George Vance, as posted by >Ruth Mills - and just HAD to write since I have LOTS of George >Vances in my direct line. My dad was George Vance, of Joliet, IL, >and my mom is still living -- at the age of 100 YEARS! She, >also a Mrs. George Vance, was born 17 Jun 1899. > Marjorie Vance Rice, Joliet, IL I can't remember if I gave great-grandma's maiden name! It was Margaret Little. I don't know about anyone else's Vance line, but the Scottish-Canadian Vances were very annoying because they all named their kids the same thing - boys were Robert, Joseph, George, James, John, David. They would have uncles named Robert, Joseph, George, etc. They would name their own sons Robert, Joseph, George, etc. They would have cousins named Robert, Joseph, George, etc. They would name their own kids Robert, Joseph, George, etc. I feel sorry for the men who had more than six sons...they would have to fall back on William and Samuel! There was a greater range of girls names but every generation had a couple of Margarets. It is extremely frustrating to find a "George Vance" and know that in that particular township you could throw a rock and hit at least half a dozen of 'em. I realize that certain names were popular but when everyone had large families and no imagination it makes researching difficult!! (I expect family picnics were rather difficult, too).
