Ephraim Vause to James Nealey, 245 acres Corner Francis Beaty. Some information about Fort Vause. I think this came from a book titled, William Preston and the Allegheny Patriots: These are references to Fort Vause, and Vause's Plantation. Page 22. Vause's plantation (Shawsville Va.) William Preston paid Vause for provisions and beef for a command of men returning from Fort Frederick. Page 25. At his own expense, Vause built a Fort know as Fort Vause, which guarded a strategic pass in the Alleghenies open to both Southern and Northern Indians. Page 47-53. French aiding Indians in fighting white settlers on the frontier. Apparently 205 Indians and 25 French Canadians left Fort Miami Ohio intending to travel 500 miles to Fort Vause area and then go on to Williamsburg. Residents along the way had fled. They arrived at Fort Vause about the 16th of June 1756. They stayed in and around the area, then attacked on June 25th, 1756. At 9:00 AM, the French asked those in the Fort to surrender. they refused! At 10:00 AM, the Fort was set afire. The Vause family and others barricaded themselves in their cabins, which were set afire about 4:00 PM that evening. The Shawnee Indians tortured many of the settlers of the Fort. Vause's servants that had been away from the Fort at the time of the attack returned. Upon seeing what was happening they fled. They came upon Preston and a few men who were on their way to help. The servants told what they had saw, and Preston felt the most prudent thing was to warn other settlers immediatly, this was done rather than advancing to the Fort. All residents of the area left. This was about 3:00 PM, which was too late to help at the Fort anyway, Preston was still three miles away. The residents of the Fort that survived were captured, 150 or so, and led back to Shawnee villages. Leevice Vause, daughter of Ephraim, was taken prisoner, along with her mother. When peace was made in 1763 she returned home and told how she was dragged along by the Indians. When she got the chance she would cut her name into the bark of sycamore and beech trees, thus giving her name to the Levisa Fork and Leevice Ford. She also told of how she had watched as her families clothes were torn off, and watched them die as their scalps were hung up to dry. Here is some more info about the attack on Fort Vause. Capt. Vause and his men were away from the Fort, it was over run by Indians. Many were killed and captured. Mrs. Vause, two of her daughters and other family members were captured. One of Ephraim's daughter's or daughter in law's was scalped, but lived with an open unhealed wound cut into her sinus that she kept stuffed full of cotton. An interesting piece of information: One of Ephraim's son's was a Capt. in the Virginia Continental Army. He served at Valley Forge and other battles alongside of George Washington. (There was supposidly a David Vance at Valley Forge) I have saw a Levi Vance mentioned as Abner's father, but as with Ephraim, there is no proof. However I have been told that Ephraim's middle name began with L. Could his name be Ephraim Levi Vance, Vause, Vanse, Voss, I don't know, but that would answer why Abner's father was thought to be Levi Vance, and Ephraim Vause. I have also been told that Ephraim's middle name could have been Peter !! This is a question that I hope someone can answer at sometime! I feel that the information is out there, perhaps in a family bible, or in some attic in an old courthouse, but I think it out there. Either way I now know that Ephraim Vause did in fact exist. (I had been told otherwise) I had been told that Ephraim Vance nor Ephraim Vause ever existed in any records in Va. I now know that this information was incorrect. I almost gave up on my search for Ephraim Vause, Vance, Vanse, Voss when I was told this, now I am glad I went with my gut feelings and continued to search!! With that I will end this e-mail! I am looking forward to any replies, either positive or negative about my thoughts, and my information that I have. Thank you fellow listers for putting up with me!
