Marcia, Regarding your John L. VANCE, b. 1825 in TN--do you have any idea where in TN these Vances' lived? I'm looking for a John Vance, b. probably the 1790s, who appears as a head of household in 1830 in Warren Co., TN. His wife was Mahala O'Rear/Orear, daughter of Daniel O'Rear (Rev. soldier) and wife Susan Gooch. I think Mahala must have been dead by the 1830 census as no adult female is shown in John Vance's household--just an adult male and many children. According to O'Rear family memoirs, John Vance was part Indian. John Vance, or at least some? of his children, are believed to have gone to DeKalb Co., AL where they lived on Sand Mountain. There is a younger John Vance (whom I strongly believe to be the son of John and Mahala O'Rear Vance) who is in his early 20s and residing in the household of Robert O'Rear (brother to Mahala) in 1850 Warren Co., TN. In either 1850 or 1851, this younger John Vance married Mary ("Polly") O'Rear, apparently there in Warren Co. (marriage records aren't extant until 1852). They had two children. This younger John Vance (m. Mary/Polly O'Rear, his first cousin) must have been dead (or gone for whatever reason) by 1860 as Mary O'Rear Vance is living in Grundy Co. (formed from Warren Co.) in her father Robert O'Rear's household, along with her two Vance children. Her second marriage was to Jonathan Roach, and her daughter Nancy married his son.
