I have found the death certificate of his brother George W. Vance, it list the parents as Thomas Vance and Sarah N. Caldwell. This makes since of the spelling since in the 1850 census there is a 91 year old Sarah Caldwell whom I believe to be the mother of Sarah N. (Caldwell) Vance.
