Is there a James Vance in the book Biographies of Logan Countians who would have been born about 1798? My James died in Osage Co., KS in 1872 at the age of 73. James was born in VA and was married to a Barbara. They had some children in what is now WV, moved to OH where at least one son, Thomas Jefferson Vance was born in Jackson Co., and then on to Sangamon Co. IL. I don't know where he went from there but some of his sons, Thomas and George W. Vance and James, Jr. turned up in Labette Co., KS in the late 1860s. In the 1870 Census of Timber Hill, Osage Twp, Labette Co., KS there was a James Vance who was the right age (72) living with a Mary (41) and some young children. Just north of there, in a Dennis, KS cemetery is the grave of a Barbara Vance who was supposed to be the mother of Thomas J. Vance.....but she didn't die until 1897....much later than James. Mary appears to be a 2d wife...but what happened to the 1st one? Divorce??? Some have claimed that this the same James Vance who was supposed to be a son of the Abner Vance who was hanged in 1819 in VA. I have seen no proof one way or another and I would welcome anything on either one of these men. Thank you! Carole
