In the 1870 census reports of Osage Twp, Labette Co., KS I have found the following men, relationships unknown: James Vance, 72, b. abt 1797-98, VA, d. 1872, bur. Dennis, Labette Co., KS Living with Mary, 41 and kids of mixed ages..like "blended" family. Isaac Vance, 35, b. abt 1834-35, OH, living alone. Is he the one who died later in 1870? Thomas J. Vance, 28, b. abt 1841-42, OH. With wife Emily Lasswell, married Sangamon Co., IL 1864. George W. Vance, 31, b. VA, living alone next door to Thomas J. Vance. In the 1900 Census of Cherryvale, Montgomery Co, KS: George W. Vance, b. 1863 OH, wife Hannah, married 10 years, son Marion, living with father: James H. Vance, Mar 1829, WV, widower. Is this the James H. who was married to a Polly Miller? Question: How are these people related? The family names are similar to those of the son and grandsons of Abner Vance, Sr. of WV but everything I have seen has them staying in WV. Note: Also in the Harmony Grove Cemetery, near the village of Dennis, is a stone for Barbara Vance that says that she is the mother of Thomas J. Vance. She d. 31 August 1897; 92y, 11m, 23 days. I don't know if she is buried with the James Vance mentioned at the beginning of this message (the only one in this cemetery) who d. 8 May 1872; 73 years. I love a mystery but this is almost too much! I'd love any sort of feedback and suggestions on this. Carole in Portland, OR
