I wonder if the castle was Dirleton Castle. If so, I have a picture of it which I am attaching. This was given to me in 1984 by the late Gladys Mecum. I believe she traveled to Scotland with Vance Family Association members.

It's a long shot, but I have a family of Vance ancestors, including some William and John Vance's, from PA and NJ, about the same time as your Mary. In their case, the H. middle initial stood for Homan, after Rachel Homan, who married John Vance in the right time frame. Quite of few of these Vance's used the middle initial H. They were a family of Presbyterian ministers (at least 2 of them) who moved around PA and OH. One was even the Keeper of the Cemetery in Erie, PA towards the end of the 1800's. My grandmother was Caroline Homan Vance, daughter of the Rev Edward Dunn Vance. She was born in Kinsman, OH, he was born in PA. Gary Richardson

In 1850 she lived in Allegheny Co., PA but was not necessarilary born there. She married a Mr. Neal (Neel, Neil, Neille, etc.) and had a Neal child John b. ca 1839 and another one William H. b. 1847. She could have been a widow or single when she married him. Her father could have been either John or William. I do not know what the H. stands for as William's middle name. It could be Mary's mother's maiden name. I have checked every record that I can find but cannot locate this Mary. The cemetery does not have the name of her parents not does the funeral director. There is no death record or obit. I started searching for her prior to computers and I have posted many times but never receive a response. PLEASE - does anyone know anything about this Mary Vance. She died in 1874 in Allegheny Co., PA. In 1870 she and her son William H. lived in Dixmont, Ohio Twp., Allegheny Co., PA. Their neighbor was John M. Crawford and family and Henry Hohmann and family. I thank you for any suggestions that you might send to me. Clare
