In the 1850 Boone Co.,VA census James and Barbara Vance had two children who were seen only on this census and not since then. Anyway I sure can't find them. William Vance was 14 yrs old in 1850 making him born 1835-36. His sister Nancy was 12 yrs old, making her born 1837-38. Their birth place in the census is unreliable since the census taker had everyone on that page born in VA even though the last two children of the Vances were born in Jackson Co., OH. Does anyone know of this William and Nancy? Did they live long enough to find spouses and marry? Where did they live in the 1860 census? Any ideas at all??? Thanks, Carole

KY, Hardin Co. KY, etc? I am not sure if this was a married or maiden name. My Grandmother's middle name of "Vance" came from this woman in 1922. Rose Vance apparently was a friend of the family--meaning a friend of Angela Back Monks Langley or her husband John Henry Langley who lived in the above areas. His father was Joseph Colville Vance (Born 3-24-1759, Died 8-5-1809). John was born March 18, 1782 and died May 6, 1857. He had 5 sons and 6 daughters. Sons: John Wilson Vance, Jr; Horace winfield Vance, Marion W. Vance, Joseph (J. Col.) Colville Vance and Josephus. Daughters: Dianne, Helen, Bridget, Larua G (Lura), Mariah Caroline and Josephine L. He was one of the early five pioneers of central Illinois. He opened a Salt Works there. Later, became known as The "Major". He served multi terms as a State Senator and was known as a good friend of Abe Lincoln. Lincoln would stay at his home when he would ride "The Circuit" (lawyers would travel from town to town) from Springfield. Stories were told at how Lincoln loved to bounce Lura on his knee.
