Author: Barnbarroch Surnames: Vance Vans Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.vance/1865.2.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello all Vances, Floyd and others, I'm starting to try to collate some of the Irish and American Vances in the hope of finally sorting out the connection between them/you and my family of Vans of Barnbarroch. You may be familiar with the work I have already done on the Scottish side of the family which can be found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vfarch and with my published paper, "The Origin of the Irish Vances". I am co-ordinating my work as far as I can with that of the Vance DNA research project - for further details of that, see http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php. I would urge any male Vances to take a look at the website and consider having a DNA test done as this seems to be a potentially useful tool in untangling the truth of the matter. I would also be very grateful if any of you Vance descendants would be prepared to share your data with me, preferably as a gedcom file to save me re-typing it all. Best wishes to all members of the Vans/Vance family, Jamie Vans of Barnbarroch. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [Vance] Vance and Ball families in NJ & PA
    2. Gary Richardson
    3. My Vance line begins with my grandmother, Caroline Homan Vance, daughter of the Rev Edward Dunn Vance and Annie Kellogg Hammond. Edward was a Presbyterian minister, born in PA, moved to Kinsman, OH, where Carol was born, and wound up in Worcester, MA, where he died about 1905. Caroline met my grandfather, Allen Haven Richardson, while he was a student at WPI, and they moved to Westfield, NJ, the state where that Vance line lived before PA. Sorry if that's confusing! Edward Dunn Vance was the son of another Presbyterian minister, Joseph Vance and Hannah Ball, of the NJ Ball family. Joseph was born in NJ but lived mostly in PA. I believe that Joseph was the son of John Vance and Rachel Homan (hence my grandmother's middle name) but can find very little to document that. I'm hoping there may be others on the Vance mailing list more familiar with this family. Going forward, the last male Vance in this line that I know of was Edward Hammond Vance, Caroline's brother (born 1890 in Kinsman, OH). In the 1930 census, Edward was in the funeral home business as a partner in a firm outside Chicago, IL. I'd love to know if anyone is a descendant of this Edward, as well. Both my uncle (Vance Richardson) and my cousin (Stephen Vance Richardson) kept the Vance name alive, but alas, we have no living male descendants for DNA testing. I participate in the Richardson DNA project, but as my closest Vance relative was my grandmother, my results won't help much with the Vance study. Gary Allen Richardson PS I have dates for most of the ancestors named above, if anyone is interested. _________________________________________________________________ i’m is proud to present Cause Effect, a series about real people making a difference. http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/MTV/?source=text_Cause_Effect

I don't suppose you know any male Vances, do you? If you're in touch with any, do persuade them to check out the DNA project at http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php and get the test done. I think it may be the only way to bridge the many gaps in the documentation. I'll pass on info of interest if I uncover any! Best, Jamie. Author: TheresannL Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.vance/1072.1205.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Karen, The name Moses Baird Vance caught my eye. Baird is an odd middle name. I'm a descendant from Vances that settled in New York from Ireland and then later in MI. My 5th Grt Grandfather, James Vance, married Martha. We think that Martha's last name was Baird but have not been able to prove it. The Baird Tavern was located in NY near many of my Vance ancestors residents. There was also a Moses Vance, born 1777, that is listed on an 1850 cenus in NY. James Vance's father was named Samuel Vance (6th grt Grandfather). He named his son named Samuel Vance (4th Grt Grandfather). Do you know anything of the Bairds? Thank you, Terri Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
