I have found the death certificate of his brother George W. Vance, it list the parents as Thomas Vance and Sarah N. Caldwell. This makes since of the spelling since in the 1850 census there is a 91 year old Sarah Caldwell whom I believe to be the mother of Sarah N. (Caldwell) Vance. I think we should look at all the David Vances I Also seem to remember that there was a Newell buried in the Vance Cemetery in Gallia County, Ohio. The occupants of the Vance Cemetery were moved to another cemetery at some point. I am talking off the top of my head ( as usual ) I need to get out some books and records. Good work ! Caldwell on the death certificate of my 2nd great grandfather. The information provided on this document was given by a David N. Vance who is a grand Nephew of the George W. Vance 1827 and died 1909. It might be noted that David's father was also named George W. Vance I guess after his uncle. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I guess I am assuming that he died in Gallia County. In my memory, Thomas, first showed up there in 1818. A William Vance showed up the following year. I always thought that this was his father but, it might just as well have been his brother. Thoughts? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Is it Newell? The reason that I asked was that the Newell family is related to the Zebulon Vance family. Maybe it's his second wife. The Newells are also related to a Harrison line. William born abt 1786, Susannah born abt 1793 and Thomas born 16 Mar 1791. In the 1860 census Thomas Vance is a neighbor of Christina Vance Colwell, she might be his sister but I can not prove as of yet. Regarding Colwell as a last name it seems to be used interchangeable with the name Caldwell. In the 1850 Census there is a 91 year old Sarah Caldwell in the Thomas Vance household. I believe this is the mother in law of Thomas especially since Thomas'wife has her name sake. Additionally my 2nd great grandfather George W. Vance has listed on his death certificate parents as Thomas Vance and Sarah N. Caldwell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My G G Grandmother was Margaret VANCE. She was born 10 Oct 1771 in Kentucky, and was the daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth McCRAY VANCE. Margaret was married to David RUSK (might have been spelled RUSH at that time) in 1793 in either Kentucky or Indiana and died 13 Sep 1832 in Waynetown, Montgomery County, IN and buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Waynetown County. They had 13 childrein including my G Grandfather Jonathan RUSK. David RUSK was born in Kentucky 10 May 1769 and died 10 Apr 1836. Does anyone know anything about Patrick and Elizabeth McCRAY VANCE? Please email me. Thanks John Sandy ned7298@sbcglobal.net

There is a John and Rachel Vance of Mendham, NJ, who appear in the records of baptisms for the First Presbyterian Church of Mendham, NJ. I believe that church may be known as the Hilltop Church nowadays. John and Rachel are my 5th great grandparents, through their son Joseph and his son Edward Dunn Vance, both of whom were Presbyterian ministers in PA and OH, after moving from NJ. The church records list Lewis Vance and Joanna Vance, baptized in 1807 and 1810, as well as Joseph, baptized 1806, as children of John and Rachel. Does anyone know of published genealogies or other sources of information for Mendham (Morris County) from that time? Mid to late 1700's through mid 1800's would be ideal. Vance was one of the prominent surnames in Mendham during that time, so I would think there must be some records of the family. I'm also interested in the Homan family, as I believe John's wife Rachel was a Homan. Two of their descendants, including my grandmother, had Homan as a middle name, and many were listed as simply "H", which might also have been Homan. I do see that other Homan family also lived in Mendham. Thank you. Gary Allen Richardson The Vance surname 'runs out' in our family with my grandmother, although my uncle's first name is Vance, and my cousin has the middle name Vance. We're doing our best to keep it alive! _________________________________________________________________ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging.
