Looking for information on Vanover-Vance : John P. Vanover married 76, married Nancy Vance 67. Dec. 14 1889 in Dickenson County, Virginia John P. son of Henry Vanover Nancy daughter of Carver Vance. OUTLAW POTTER, A VICTIM OF HIS OWN REVOLVER Member of a notorious Gang of Desperadoes Accidentally Kills Himself in Dickenson COEBURN, VA., July 14 [Special] - New has just been received here from Dickenson county that Garfield Potter, one of the gang of Kentucky outlaws, who have been terrorizing the people of Cumberland mountain and the adjacent country recently, let his pistol fall from his belt, which caused a discharge, the ball taking effect just below the left nipple and killing him almost instantly. The gang with which Potter associated, besides several women, included George Potter, Garfield Potter, George Fleming, Creed Fleming, and others who came and went as suited their convenience. These Flemings are closely related to Cal and Henan Fleming, who, together with Doc Taylor murdered the Mullins family as Pound Gap in ‘92. These men took part in the Vance-Vanover feud on Elkhorn Creek, in Kentucky, last spring, and had to leave there, after which they took up quarters in an old log cabin on the Virginia side near Osborn’s Gap. They have since that time been a constant terror to the citizens by their lawlessness and threats of violence. Four of the gang were out on Pound river, a few miles from their “headquarters”, on the night before the accident occurred. They called at Harve Bryant’s about midnight where they spent the remainder of the night. After breakfast, the went out, and were sitting down at a game of cards when the fatal accident occurred. The father of the Potter boys, who lives in Kentucky, was told the news, and he came for the body of his son. Quite a number of the gang’s enemies also came over, all armed to the teeth. They found only George Potter of the gang, and agreed that he might go across “the line” to see his brother buried; and then take his chances of escape. There are several felony indictments pending against George in the court of Pike County, and they will probably land him in jail to answer for his wrong doings. Great excitement prevails there, as part of this gang are supposed to be in hiding among the mountains, and it is feared that there will be depredations committed by them. OUTLAW KILLED FREELING, VA., Aug. 13 -(SPL)- George Potter, the Kentucky outlaw, who has been terrorizing the people of this section, was killed on Lick Fork on Saturday evening, by a posse of men, who were trying to arrest him "Son" Mullins one of the gang was with Potter in a house, but escaped. Potter fought desperately up to the end. Sixteen balls were found to have entered his body. One of the posse was cut across the face by a bullet from the outlaw’s pistol. GEORGE POTTER KILLED AFTER BATTLE FOR LIFE THE CRIMINAL FOUGHT DESPERATELY, BUT FINALLY PERISHED WITH SIXTEEN BULLETS IN HIS BODY FREELING, VA., Aug 12 -(Special)- George Potter, the Kentucky outlaw, who has been terrorizing the people of this section, was killed on Lick Fork on Saturday evening, by a posse of men, who were trying to arrest him upon a warrant charging him with the crime of assault. “Son” Mullins, one of the gang, was with Potter in a house, where the officers found them; but he escaped, though it is thought he was fatally shot. Potter fought desperately to the end. Sixteen balls entered his body; his head was frightfully mangeled. One of the officers men was cut across the face by a ball from the outlaw’s pistol, two more were shot through another’s hat, while a third had a hole put through his vest. It is probable that the relatives of the dead man will take his remains to their home in Kentucky for internment. Potter has also been in the penitentiary of Kentucky and North Carolina. Potter’s wife (with whom he has been living for some time) says that he has killed four men to her knowledge. His father has paid over thousands of dollars to defend him while in the hands of the law. ONLY THIRTY YEARS OLD George Potter was bout thirty years old and had served three terms in the penitentiaries of as many states. He was sent to the Virginia pernientiary from Washington county for horse-stealing, served a term in the North Carolina penitentiary for robbery, and also a term in the Kentucky penitentiary for stealing cattle. He was wanted in Tennessee for killing a boy who refused to give him some liquor in which he was in charge. A few days before his death, Potter boasted of his record saying that he had killed four men and shot twelve. He had many times declared that he would never be taken alive--that not even his Creator could arrest him--and upon these occassions he would use language that it would be sacreligious to repeat. --part0_911017071_boundary--

    3. I am looking for any information about Jane VANCE whose marriage to Samuel KELLER on 10 April, 1806, in Washington Co., Virginia. is recorded in _Marriages of Washington County, VA 1781-1835_. I have an unreferenced birth date for her of 28 Jan 1786, and a death date of 1854. By 1811 they were living in Tennessee, where sons Samuel Vance, Oscar K, and Casper Marion were born. In 1860 her (apparently) widowed husband was living with a son in St. Clare Co., Missouri. Thanks for your help! Bruce Cogan Queanbeyan, NSW, Australia [email protected]

    3. Hi, I am new to this list, but proud to be here, as my maiden name was VANCE. I am a member of the VFA, and am searching for information on my GGGG grandfa John Vance, who died before 25 May 1801 in Topsham, VT. I am searching for info on the couple I believe to be his parents: HUGH and MARY (Pemberton) VANS. They had a son John in 1737 in Boston. I am kind of stuck at this point and will be glad to share all I have. In case it would be of help to anyone, here is my lineage: John and Jane (---) Vance, through their son: David Vance and wife Olive (David born Apr 1788 Boston or CT?), their son: Aaron Vance and wife Lucinda Ann Tucker (Aaron born 14 Oct 1812 Groton,VT): George Livermore Vance and wife Elizabeth Kumbel Fowler (George L. born 13 Mar 1839 Groton, VT), through their son and my grandfather: George Alexander Vance and wife Helen Irene Taxis (George born 21 Apr 1869 in Washington, D.C.) My dad, Geo. T. Vance, born 1900 Joliet, IL. I have all names of children of David, Aaron, Geo. L., Geo A., and am always looking for a new cousin. More than glad to share what I have. Can anyone rhelp me with HUGH VANS, born late 1600's? Marge Vance Rice, Joliet, IL

    1. [VANCE-L] VANCE surname
    2. Hello fellow VANCE listers, It is me again, [email protected] (Tim Vance), I would like some feedback about something that I have Came across several times in doing research! QUESTION: How many ways has the surname VANCE been spelled through the years? Especially in the early years of settlement in America! There were so many different nationalities migrating to America from 1600 to 1800, with so many different accents and ways of pronouncing names, that the spelling of names such as VANCE had to be spelled several different ways. The Scotch-Irish probably spelled it VANCE, the Germans could have heard it, and spelled it VANTZ. The English may have heard VAUSE, The Dutch may have heard VANSE, and the French could have heard VANS. REMEMBER: Many of our ancestors were illerate, they could not read or write, they would tell someone their name and the person would write it the way it sounded to them, which was not necessarily the way we spell it today! IN CONCLUSION: Researching only the spelling VANCE may very well leave some branches missing from our family trees! Tim Vance Orange Co. Va. [email protected] OR [email protected]

    1. [VANCE-L] Almost as good as a death certificate
    2. I didn't get a death certificate but I received something almost as good. I called cemeteries until I found the one where my grandfather was buried. He died in 1949 in California. They told me a lot of info over the phone and sent me a copy of the Permit For Removal And Burial. This permit listed his name, date & place of birth and death and burial, father's name, mother's maiden name, SSN, spouse's name, cause of death, all kinds of great info to help me. So you might want to give this a try if you're having trouble getting a death certificate. Jan Colorado

    3. I was notified that the message that follows was not posted to the list because of its HTML format, yet I have seen what appears to be one response to it (thank you, Grace Dotson!). I am re-posting it in case it reached only a small portion of the list. I apologize to anyone who's ploughed through it already. I am descended from James COLVILLE, Sr. (1695-1777), who was married to Ann VANCE (b. 1700 in Ireland), who was a daughter of Andrew VANCE and Jane HOGE. What I am wondering, mainly, is where the Vance family originated (presumably Scotland, but does anyone have a more precise idea of where?). Why did they settle in Northern Ireland and when? Anything more that anyone knows about this family (or about the Colvilles, for that matter) I would very much appreciate hearing about! Nan Runde [email protected]

    2. Hello cousin's and friend's, As usual I am looking for decendents of Abner Vance and Susannah (Howard) Vance, so if you decend from Abner and Susannah, drop me a line. However this week I am channeling my efforts toward finding the parents and siblings of Eliza jane Elswick. Here is what I know: James Harvey Vance s/o William Vance and Nancy (Burnsides ? ),(James Harvey Vance was Abner and Susannah's grandson) married Eliza Jane Elswick on 10-Feb-1853. I have the following children listed for James Harvey Vance and Eliza Jane Elswick: John Patton Vance William Harley Vance Rosannah Vance Malinda W. Vance Charles Thomas Vance Abner Vance James A. Vance Reece Vance. What I am looking for is Eliza Jane Elswick's parents and siblings, and of course any other info I can find about her. If anyone see's anything wrong with the information above, please let me know because this is info I have gathered from various sources, and it may not be exact! The maiden name Burnsides for the wife of William Vance is most likely not the correct name, but I feel like I need to call her something besides Nancy! When the correct name for Nancy (Burnsides ?) is found I would really appreciare someone telling me what it is, it would make me feel a lot better. Thanks a bunch everyone for putting up with me. 2. The parents of Ann Vance are not known, that particular line of Vance came from Ireland. Vances came from lots of places to America. We can document the Vance family back to the south of France , from there to England, from there some went to Scotland, some might have gone to Germany.; some of those in Scotland went to Ireland, , one family said they came from Wales. Some of all of the above listed groups came to America plus some Germans by the name of Wentz which was "Americanized" to Vance. Hope this helps someone, Grace Dotson

RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff --------------02AB183BE8CCBC7A7586D40E--
