I don't recognize Amelia E. Vance but I do have some ideas on how you could proceed. Please accept my apologies if you already know to do the steps I suggest and were just looking for a connection. Check the PA census records for 1860, 1870 for Ameilia in her parents' household. She may have moved out by 1870, in which case of course you look for her in Jacob Hazel's household. Once you know her parents' names you can check them in the 1850 census as well. Note all her siblings (some could have been born and died by 1860 so do check 1850). Order a copy of her death certificate. You can verify her parents' names this way, and possibly get her mother's maiden name. Trace her family and her parents' family in the 1900, 1910, 1920 census and you'll get a lot more information, such as where parents were born, how long they've been married, how many children were born to them. Hello lister's, The list has been slow lately, but I am sure that is because of the upcoming holiday, of which I would like to say to all, "MERRY CHRISTMAS" I have saw some interesting information and questions going across some of the list's, and I have recieved some interesting e-mail as of late, concerning the Father of Abner Vance b. 1753-63, place unk? m. Susannah Howard b. 1767. The name Ephraim Vause, Vanse, Vance, Voss has been showing up from several sources in my mail, I have been researching Ephraim Vance, Vause, Vanse, Voss for some time now, I have found him in and around the Shenandoah Valley during the mid 1700's. From what I have found he owned a fair amout of land around Christiansburg Va. in the mid 1700's. He also built a fort about 10 miles West of Christiansburg, called Fort Vause. This fort was attacked by Shawnee in the summer of 1756, Ephraim's wife and one or more of his children were taken captive at that time. His wife (I have been told) was later killed in PA. and never returned to Ephraim. One daughter did return in 1763 after peace was established with the Indians. Ephraim Vance, Vause, Vanse, Voss can be found in volumes of The Scotch- Irish Settlement In Virginia, he is referred to several times. He finally left Va. and went to the Carolinas, I believe to the area of Dobbs co. NC. There is no reference to Ephraim being the father of Abner Vance in any of the volumes that I have saw. This is not to say that he wasn't, it's just that there has been no proof as of yet to prove it. I have Theodosia Hewlings listed as the wife of Ephraim Vause, Vance, Vanse, Voss, they were married in Philadelphia Co. Pa. on 11-Jul-1738, Theodosia Hewlings was the daughter of Jacob Hewlings and Dorothy Eves, Theodosia was b. abt. 1722. I have more info about the Hewlings family if anyone is interested. Ephraim had a son named William Vause that served in the war, William had a daughter named Theodosia Vause. Ephraim also had a son named Jessee Vause that lived in NC. William Vause (I believed lived in Va.) It is also said (but not proved) that Ephraim had a daughter named Elizabeth "Deliz" Vance that married (Joseph?) Hatfield, Elizabeth was born in the Isles Of Wight Co. Va. abt 1735, (a little early for Theodosia to be her mother) according to my source there was no mother listed for Elizabeth, however, when she married (Joseph?) Hatfield her name was listed as Elizabeth Vance Smith??. Which leads me to believe that she may have been married twice. I have also been told that Ephraim came from Ireland, but I don't know this for sure. There are a lot of unknowns about Ephraim Vause, Vance, Vanse, Voss, and Abner Vance. I think there are some people that are afraid to say anything about Abner's parents, or who they may have been, but I would like to find out what everyone thinks, and have some more insight to this age old question! I also have heard from sources (No proof tho) as to who Ephraim's parents were! A lot of this information came from different CD disks that some people feel are incorrect, (I hold judgement on these disks until I find out if they are right or not) As to the parents of Ephraim, I feel that I may cause a real controversy if I list their names, so for now I will not do that, however I will list them at a later date even if I don't find the info. to prove who they were. I will be listing information that I have from time to time on the list. This information will be about the Vance family and families related to the Vance family. I will not claim that all of the information that I list will be exact, it will be what I have, if I list something that someone knows to be wrong I would appreciate them letting me know, because I am looking for the truth, I want to know for sure where I came from as I'm sure the rest of you do to. I realize that the information that I have listed above may be controversial, and is not the same information that other people have, but this is the best bet yet as to who Abner's father was! I look for the truth, and if bringing controversial information out in the open is what it takes to get to that truth, then I am your man. I truly hope that I have not offended anyone, for that is not my intention. Look for other posts (some controversial, and some not) I am going to list all the information that I have over the next few weeks, that is if I don't get kicked off of the list!!! I look forward to any comments, or replies, both on the list or privately, my address is below. Tim Vance 4th Great Grandson of Abner Vance & Susannah Howard. [email protected]
Hello, I am new to this list and was waiting to see if there is any activity here. I haven't seen any yet, but i decided to send my query out anyway. I have recently found a new direct line in my family and wish to see if anyone else is researching the same Vance's. My one and only Vance to date is Amelia E. Vance b. June 26, 1853 in Centre Co., PA d. May 8, 1943 in Wallaceton, Clearfield Co., PA. She married Jacob Hazel and they had eight children. Any help is appreciated, Chuck Bush http://www.geocities.com/~bush-family
Is anyone researching the Vance family that was in Greene/Washington Co, TN around 1780-1820 ? My Adams family interacted with members of the Vance Family and I am trying to find out where the Adams came from and maybe they came to the area with members of the Vance family. I trying to find out information on their neighbors, friends and in-laws. Any help would be appreciated. Sarah Clevenger
Bill, My ancestery line is the same as yours. I believe, I am a descendant of Andrew Vance/Jane Hoge. I know that I am descended from his son Major William Vance. Proof that William is the son of Andrew is a problem. However, I have a photocopy of William Balbirnie's book, "AN ACCOUNT HISTORICAL & GENEALOGICAL FROM THE EARLIEST DAYS TILL THE PRESENT TIME OF THE FAMILY OF VANCE" dated 1854. 41 pages. This book deals mainly with the family in Ireland, Scotland, England and France. I have never read it, I've only checked for connections to my line. I also have a photocopy of a book by Marjorie Loomis Cherry, the title is "THE FAMILY OF ANDREW VANCE". This book has John VANCE 1712-1760 married Elizabeth__________? Hannah born 1735 married Col. William Crawford. It also lists the siblings of Hannah. John Jr. b. 1730, Elizabeth b. 1733, Alexander b. 1737, Andrew b. 1739. It lists the spouses of the siblings. This book is 330 pages plus. Hi everyone. I've subscribed for several weeks now. So here is my Vance line. I am descended from Hannah Vance and William Crawford. This is my Vance line as I have it: 1. Hannah Vance was born about 1723. She died after 12 December 1818 in Dunbar Township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. 2. John P. Vance was born about 1699. He died in 1760 in Frederick County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Colville. Does anyone have anything about her ancestry? 3. Andrew Vance was born about 1672. He died about 1740. He married Jane Hoge. She was born about 1675. Does anyone have anything about her ancestry? 4. John Vance was born about 1645. He died in 1698. He married Elizabeth Williamson? 5. Sir Lancelot Francis Vance was born about 1625. He died in 1689 during the Seige of Londonderry, Ireland. He married Agnes Reiny. Does anyone have any information about her ancestry? 6. Reverand John Vans, A.M. was born about 1596. He died before 26 July 1662. He married Elizabeth McDowall. Does anyone have anything about her ancestry? The Reverand Vans was of the House of Barnbarroch in Scotland. Has his ancestry been finally established? One version has him descended from King Robert the Bruce of Scotland. I have a lot of information based on that version. But it doesn't seem to be accepted, since it is only in O'Hart and not in another publication such as Ancestral Roots by Weis as updated by Sheppard. Any help will be gratefully accepted. Thanks, Bill Coup

He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and his quills were tucked by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman seemed tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair tucked back into place. She gave him some water ...as they sat at the table and she answered his questions..... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few --- the oldest was twenty , the youngest not quite two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister she whispered was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age...the marks of the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children .......... she nodded her head .......and felt her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she..."never forgot" was it Pennsylvania? or Ohio? or what? They had come cross the sea, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some, and write some, but really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done, so he mounted his horse and rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years". Now picture a time warp .....its now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for "THAT ENTRY" from long, long ago. Could they ever imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew would they wonder at the yearnings we feel and the searching that makes them so lovingly real. Would they understand our efforts, our struggles, to reach back to touch them because they are ours? Hush now awhile, we can hear if we listen the words they impart, "Our bloods in your veins and our love is in your hearts". Jay, Look in the 1910 Oklahoma census for your ggrandfather. It will show you his approx age, his state of birth, his wife's age and state of birth, how long they've been married, and their parents' states of birth. If you know where your ggrandfather died, get a death certificate. Same for your ggrandmother. You should be able to work your way back through the censuses pretty easily through 1850. Looking for information about Samuel Vance who was born about 1852 in Durham Co., Ont. then moved to Lambton Co., Ont. before becoming a judge. He died in Port Huron, Michigan in 1900. I can't find any more information about where he was a judge or who his wife and children were with the exception of one son Harold who apparently became president of the Studebaker Corp. in South Bend, Ind. Some people get excited about some of the information that I have, keep in mind that I will not tell you something is proven if it is not, I will tell you if it is doccumented, or if I am looking for proof. Such as the name Burnsides in the above info. It has a ? after it which indicates that I do not have proof of this and I have been told is the wrong name for William Vance's wife, but that is what I have in my information, so until I find different I will continue to use Burnsides with a ? after it. Union soldier, 1st Sergeant John A. Vance, Co. I, 7th West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, was honored Sunday the 8th of November, 1998. Grave markers for him and his wife, Mahala Hedrick Vance, were dedicated. These markers were obtained by Carol Pennington, a Great Great Granddaughter. All joined in the Pledge of Allegence, and the Invocation was given by Rev. Randall Ours, Chaplain, SUVCW 7th WV Inf. Camp #7. Biographies of John and Mahala were read by one of their Great Great Granddaughters, Helan Phares, of Onego. A history of the 7th WV Inf. Vol. was given by Joshua Staley, a member of the Co. A, 7th WV Inf. Re-enactment Unit. The Re-enactment Unit had reproductions of the flags carried by the 7th WV Infantry during the Civil War, uniformed soldiers, and ladies in period dress. Deanna Armentrout sang the Star Spangled Banner. Taps were played by Alan Granofsky. The McNeill's Rangers Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, were represented by members in Confederate uniform, carring flags of their Camp. There were many descendants of John and Mahala present among the 50 people who attended the dedication. An Honor Guard was formed by both the Union and Confederate groups. We must all remember that both Union and Confederate soldiers were Americans, and are American Veterans worthy of honor on Veteran's Day. Members of the following organizations were represented. Pendleton Co., WVa Historical Preservation Association; Co. A, 7th WV Infantry Volunteers Re-enactment Unit, and their ladies, Fairmont; Sons of Union Veterand of the Civil War, 7th West Virginia Infantry Camp #7, Franklin; McNeill's Rangers Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Moorefield; Order of the Bonnie Blue, Phoebe Warner Chapter, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans Brig. Gen. James Boggs' Camp #1706, Franklin; and Pendleton Co. Historical Society, Inc. Veterans of the Navy and Army were also present, and all Veterans were honored for their contribution to safeguarding the freedoms we oft times take for granted. Marcia, Regarding your John L. VANCE, b. 1825 in TN--do you have any idea where in TN these Vances' lived? I'm looking for a John Vance, b. probably the 1790s, who appears as a head of household in 1830 in Warren Co., TN. His wife was Mahala O'Rear/Orear, daughter of Daniel O'Rear (Rev. soldier) and wife Susan Gooch. I think Mahala must have been dead by the 1830 census as no adult female is shown in John Vance's household--just an adult male and many children. According to O'Rear family memoirs, John Vance was part Indian. John Vance, or at least some? of his children, are believed to have gone to DeKalb Co., AL where they lived on Sand Mountain. There is a younger John Vance (whom I strongly believe to be the son of John and Mahala O'Rear Vance) who is in his early 20s and residing in the household of Robert O'Rear (brother to Mahala) in 1850 Warren Co., TN. In either 1850 or 1851, this younger John Vance married Mary ("Polly") O'Rear, apparently there in Warren Co. (marriage records aren't extant until 1852). They had two children. This younger John Vance (m. Mary/Polly O'Rear, his first cousin) must have been dead (or gone for whatever reason) by 1860 as Mary O'Rear Vance is living in Grundy Co. (formed from Warren Co.) in her father Robert O'Rear's household, along with her two Vance children. Her second marriage was to Jonathan Roach, and her daughter Nancy married his son.
