Hello Everyone, I am the listowner for the Vance list. An absentee listowner for a few days because of a cold/virus going around here at the moment. We have over 60 people on this list now and more subbing everyday, so please keep posting your queries and questions. For those who need a description of this list: A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding the Vance surname and variations (e.g., Vanss, Vans, Vaux, Wauss, Waus, Vass, Vauss, Vaus) I gave the variations of the Vance name in case someone has one of these other surnames that later became a Vance, or at some time where Vances. If anyone feels this needs to be changed and made more specific, please let know. Thanks Vicki, for posting the url's for the GenConnect boards, I got sidetracked and didn't get them posted. Thanks, Sonya Vance Woosley Descendant of John Vance and Marinda McKinney Mosely.

Jan, William M. Vance was my GGGgrandfather(through his son, Robert Jefferson). I am especially excited to hear from you because I have not so far been able to pin down his father. Other researchers have tentatively identified him as David Vance, but the identity of David's mother seems to be in question. Do contact the Vance family association: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/VFA/ They are a wonderful source of information, and have put me in touch with a number of cousins. I would love to hear more about your research. Sandra Bonds McDaniel

Hello list, First let me say I am sorry to my cousin Grace Dotson. I feel I was cynical, and rude in my last post, and for that I apologize. I have been told many times that I am hardheaded and stubborn, and that it came from the Vance side of the family! Do you agree Grace? Anyway I have some information from Orange Co. Va. Not much but a little. I found at the Orange co. courthouse a Vincent VOSS Jr. that was granted a deed on 24-Jan-1790. Book 19, page 482. Other people in Orange Co. Va. Rice Vass, deed-27-Mar-1781, Book 18, Page 159. Walker Vass, deed-28-Mar-1831, Book 33, Page 326. Fannie J. Vass, b. Sep-1869, d/o Henry & Mary Vass. Edward Vass, deed-25-Nov-1779, Book 17, Page 266. Also in Orange co. Va. I found: Henry Vance b. 6-May-1877, s/o Henry & E.J. Vance. In will book 1, 1735-1743. David Vance, Page 21,23,24. William Vance, Page 44. ( I intend to go back ASAP and copy these wills) Also on record in Orange Co. Va. David Vance 27-May-1742, book 5, page 174, lease. David Vance 27-May-1742, book 5, page 176, release. James Vance 24-Jun-1742, book 5, page 254, lease. James Vance 24-Jun-1742, book 5, page 255, release. James Vance 26-Nov-1742, book 7, page 46, lease. James Vance 26-Nov-1742, book 7, page 48, release. This information has been documented. Grace I am sorry, I wish you the best Christmas ever, and even a happier New Year!! Your cousin Tim Vance

Tim, I believe what Grace is saying is that Ephraim VAUSE is the one in the Virginia records and not Ephraim VANCE, I hope I have that right. I agree that sharing information is important, not only so we can clear up some of the inaccurate information floating around, but also because another researcher may happen to have a record that may not mean much to them, but could be the one that will break down another researchers brick walls. I also believe that sources and documentation are the most important part of genealogy, my definition of documents/documentation are records generated during the time the person was living, including bible records and personal letters. Until we find the records to prove the information we have to be careful that we aren't leading others, especially new researchers, down a false path and many wasted years of research. If they understand that the information may not be correct, but they still want to follow the lead, then that is their choice and they are certainly free to do that. Unfortunately it doesn't always work that way, people list other people as their resources or don't list resources at all and include the possible faulty info in their lines, then they share it and it spreads over and over loosing the part about "this hasn't been proven" and becomes fact. But I also encourage everyone to post their information to the list, that way others can let them know if they see incorrect data in their file. This list has a few experienced Vance researchers on it, so this is a good chance to find out if you are heading in the wrong direction. There are now 53 people subscribed to this list, if you haven't posted your Vance information please do so, you may find a few cousins. Now if someone could just untangle the WEBB file I found that lists it's source as LDS over and over, I will be happy. For now though according to that file it seems my 4th great grandmother was a sister to her father. By the way, if anyone is interested in sharing their Vance records (bible records, wills, census, death, marriage, birth, or other records). I will be happy to start a page for that. I was planning on doing it eventually, but so far I haven't had time to. Sonya Vance Woosley

My Dear Cousin Grace, Thank you for your reply to my post! Now that I have your attention, as well as many others on the list, here is what I have to say! I have found several references to Ephraim Vause in the Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Is that considered Virginia documents? The Levi Vance confusion I understand, but as I said: I was told that Ephraim's middle name began with an L. ?? Could it have been Ephraim Levi Vause? Can we rule out Ephraim Vause as Abner's father without finding the real name of Abner's father? I can't! Where did the information that Ephraim Vause was Abner Vance's father originally come from? There has to be some reason why people are researching Ephraim Vause in the hope of finding a connection to Abner Vance!! I think that records of Ephraim Vause's family does exist, they have just not been found yet, the same holds true for Abner Vance! It could be in the attic, or basement of any courthouse from Pennsylvania down through Virginia, and into North Carolina. There are a lot of courthouses that have not been searched in that area. A family bible could be in an attic or basement anywhere in the country!! Another question: If Ephraim Vause is in no way connected to the Vance's, why does the VFA have data on him? I would like to challenge everyone on the Vance list to this: Go to courthouses near you, find any Vance information available, post it to the list! Ask your friends in other counties and states to do the same, and you will help them look for their family in your county. This is a major undertaking that can not be done by just a handful of people, it will take all of us helping each other. It would take a lifetime for just a few people to find all of the information that is out there. Let's find our heritage. Just like all of you, I would like to know where I came from. Post your undocumented information to the list, someone else may have documentation on it! Let's all get together on this, including the VFA, after all they were OUR ancestors!! Your Cousin & Friend Tim Vance 4th Great Grandson of Abner Vance & Susannah Howard. [email protected]
Ephriam VAUSE is well documented in several Virginia books. Ehpriam VANCE --NEVER--appeared in any Virginia records . On one occasion someone misread court records and wrote Ephriam VA-N-SE rather than Va-U-se and henceforth , the confusion. Levi VANCE never appears in any Virginia or North Carolina record. Abner Vance had a son , John, who had a son, Levi, who had a son, Abner. someone, without thinking recorded (in LDS) Abner as son of Levi which is correct, but the wrong Levi and Abner, these were running about 100 years late. You can save yourself a lot of time and trouble but purchasing back issues of the VANCE FAMILY ASSOCIATION newsletters. Ephriam VAUSE left no Bible and no birth records exist for his family. The only 2 proven offspring of Ephriam and Theodosia VAUSE are son William and daughter Levisi, the VFA has data on them. Others documented, but unnaned, are the daughter who did not return from Indian captivity and the son who is said to have been at the mill during the last attack on the fort. This family remained VAUSE and use that name today. Abner VANCE was a VANCE as early as 1767 and his family has been VANCE since that date. There is absolutely nothing to indicate Abner was a VAUSE . Hello list, It is me again, Tim Vance with more info. about people from days gone by! Note: I do not have proof in writing that this info is exact! Ephraim Vance, Vause, Vanse, Voss served in the Revolutionary War. Epraim's son Jessee Vause was a Presbytarian Minister. Jessee was married twice, 1st: to Susan Ballard, 2nd. to ???? Kennedy. Ephraim's daughter Elizabeth "Deliz" Vance married Joseph Hatfield (Not Jacob) in 1760, she died in 1780 in Washington Co. Va. This is the other children I have listed for Ephraim. (Still looking for proof) Alexander Vance b. abt. 1732. Thomas Vance b. abt. 1740 Abner Vance b. abt 1753-63. Male Vance b. abt.1748. Ephraim Vause to James Nealey, 245 acres Corner Francis Beaty. Some information about Fort Vause. I think this came from a book titled, William Preston and the Allegheny Patriots: These are references to Fort Vause, and Vause's Plantation. Page 22. Vause's plantation (Shawsville Va.) William Preston paid Vause for provisions and beef for a command of men returning from Fort Frederick. Page 25. At his own expense, Vause built a Fort know as Fort Vause, which guarded a strategic pass in the Alleghenies open to both Southern and Northern Indians. Page 47-53. French aiding Indians in fighting white settlers on the frontier. Apparently 205 Indians and 25 French Canadians left Fort Miami Ohio intending to travel 500 miles to Fort Vause area and then go on to Williamsburg. Residents along the way had fled. They arrived at Fort Vause about the 16th of June 1756. They stayed in and around the area, then attacked on June 25th, 1756. At 9:00 AM, the French asked those in the Fort to surrender. they refused! At 10:00 AM, the Fort was set afire. The Vause family and others barricaded themselves in their cabins, which were set afire about 4:00 PM that evening. The Shawnee Indians tortured many of the settlers of the Fort. Vause's servants that had been away from the Fort at the time of the attack returned. Upon seeing what was happening they fled. They came upon Preston and a few men who were on their way to help. The servants told what they had saw, and Preston felt the most prudent thing was to warn other settlers immediatly, this was done rather than advancing to the Fort. All residents of the area left. This was about 3:00 PM, which was too late to help at the Fort anyway, Preston was still three miles away. The residents of the Fort that survived were captured, 150 or so, and led back to Shawnee villages. Leevice Vause, daughter of Ephraim, was taken prisoner, along with her mother. When peace was made in 1763 she returned home and told how she was dragged along by the Indians. When she got the chance she would cut her name into the bark of sycamore and beech trees, thus giving her name to the Levisa Fork and Leevice Ford. She also told of how she had watched as her families clothes were torn off, and watched them die as their scalps were hung up to dry. Here is some more info about the attack on Fort Vause. Capt. Vause and his men were away from the Fort, it was over run by Indians. Many were killed and captured. Mrs. Vause, two of her daughters and other family members were captured. One of Ephraim's daughter's or daughter in law's was scalped, but lived with an open unhealed wound cut into her sinus that she kept stuffed full of cotton. An interesting piece of information: One of Ephraim's son's was a Capt. in the Virginia Continental Army. He served at Valley Forge and other battles alongside of George Washington. (There was supposidly a David Vance at Valley Forge) I have saw a Levi Vance mentioned as Abner's father, but as with Ephraim, there is no proof. However I have been told that Ephraim's middle name began with L. Could his name be Ephraim Levi Vance, Vause, Vanse, Voss, I don't know, but that would answer why Abner's father was thought to be Levi Vance, and Ephraim Vause. I have also been told that Ephraim's middle name could have been Peter !! This is a question that I hope someone can answer at sometime! I feel that the information is out there, perhaps in a family bible, or in some attic in an old courthouse, but I think it out there. Either way I now know that Ephraim Vause did in fact exist. (I had been told otherwise) I had been told that Ephraim Vance nor Ephraim Vause ever existed in any records in Va. I now know that this information was incorrect. I almost gave up on my search for Ephraim Vause, Vance, Vanse, Voss when I was told this, now I am glad I went with my gut feelings and continued to search!! With that I will end this e-mail! I am looking forward to any replies, either positive or negative about my thoughts, and my information that I have. Thank you fellow listers for putting up with me!
