Hi, Marcia Your Vances are right in the same vicinity (Tenn., Ark,) as mine so I feel strongly that they're the same but I'm missing too much info on mine to tie them together. I don't show a John Vance. My William Vance was in Crittenden County, Arkansas in 1850. (I have my mother and her parents in Lawrence County....BUGG/TANNER.) Also, my William Vance, Sr., according to the info I have from "Eastern Arkansas Biographies and Historical Memoirs", left New Orleans in 1840 and moved back to Belfast, Ireland where he died. I'll forward any new info that I may discover that pertains to your Vances. I'm going to Salt Lake next month....maybe that visit will shed some light on these people. Good luck! Barbara
Pam, I just now clicked on the Vance Family Association homepage address that I'd given you and it took me directly to their page. I copied it from my "sent" mail to paste here...try again. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/vfa Just click on the highlighted address. Hopefully it will work for you, too. Good luck, Barbara
The Vance Family Association homepage is located at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/vfa You will learn about their newsletter and a lot more!
I was directed to [email protected], but cannot find anything relative to a Vance newsletter-can you help me? Jim Chandler
This is the first time writing about a family name, but was not getting anywhere with other types of inquiry. Am tracint back THOMAS GILLESPIE, married to Jane Vance, born in Mecklenburg County. Received some info from Knox Co. where Thomas lived. His father was also Thomas Gillespie, married to Naomi (?) last name unkn own. The father Thomas apparently died in Rowan Co. NC in 1796. Jane Vance's father was John Vance and grandfather David Vance from Mecklenburg Co. It might help me to understand whether this area was consideree Tennessee at that point in time. No other information on Vance's other than John was born in Mecklenburg Co. , as was his father David. Thanks in advance-Jim Chandler.
My gg grandfather Hiram Vance who was married to Phoebe Skidmore went to Illinois after Phoebe died along with several of his children and his brother Robert's children. Hiram was born in Pendleton County, WV - 8 Feb. 1796 and died - 3 May 1876 in Clinton, IL. He was listed in Pendleton County census in 1870. Seeking information on the Vances who went to Illinois: Perry, Levi, Elias, Hiram, Jr. Nancy, Jesse and others. John A., Reuben, Elizabeth and Solomon stayed in Pendleton Co.
Seeking information on James Vance born approximately 1810 in Virginia. He was married in 1854 at Woodbine College to Mary Matilda Wise. In the Grant Co., WI census of 1870 he was sixty years old. According to the census Mary was 34 years old so she would have been in 1836. The census said she was from WI. The census showed the following children at 1870 to be as follows. Margaret, 14; Mary, 10; Henry, 6; Charles, 3. Charles Vance was my grandfather and James Vance my great grandfather. I would appreciate any information on this family. Thank you. My Marcena / Marsena VANCE was born abt Aug. 1827 in what is now WV. By the age of 19 (1846) she was in Sangamon Co., IL marrying a middle aged widower, Alexander Reeves, who had hired her to care for his 12 children. She told her grandchildren that her father was a river boat captain on the Ohio River and she had an Aunt Polly who had long red hair. There was a William VANCE (wife Chloe) who owned a part share in a steamboat on the Sangamon River in Springfield in the 1830s. He also had a sister Polly, and a daughter Barbara Ann, named for his mother. Was he related to Marcena? Marcena's Reeves children: Rebecca, Harriet Josephine, James, Vashti, Barbara Ann, Alexander, Thomas A. , John H., and Abraham Lincoln Reeves. Marcena's children, father unknown, born after the death (abt 1864) of Mr. Reeves: Daisy, Lorena Marcella b. 1866, and Susan Reeves, b. abt 1869. She brought her 4 youngest to OR about 1875. A Thomas VANCE helped her financially when her husband died. Who was he, and how were he and William VANCE related to Marcena? And who the heck fathered those last children?

This is the first time I have sent this information to a list. I have the Vol 1, #1. issue of the new Buchanan Co Hist Soc News letter. It has some information on one line of the family of Elijah Esquire Vance, but seems to be confused as to the name of the wife of "Lige" and has some marriages performed by the same Elijah. It also has the membership roster of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church which includes some of our Vances. Grace Dotson
Bruce Vance has the GenConnect pages up on the VFA page now. To post your info go to: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/vfa/genconli.htm Let's fill up those boards! Vicki
